Found a set of ESS 2 way bookshelf jobs with the heil tweeter in primo cosmetic shape for 5 dollars. I was unable to hear them before buying them but, heils for 5 dollars is always worth a gamble it would seem.

Upon getting them home and hooking them up one tweeter is not functioning but the woofer is and on the other one, the woofer is not functioing and the tweeter appears to sound weak. I have not hooked each speaker up individually yet to see if the problem is the speaker or something else yet.

The coils(?) on the crossovers look good, could the caps be bad? I was under the impression that the caps have a lot to do with the function of the tweeter but nothing to do with the woofer. I would appreciate somebody confirming this.

Thanks

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=027-592 This is a good re-placement for the original cap
To insure the tweeters are in function.... you should messure at the leads of the heil units for dc Ohm with a meter afir. the result will be close to 3-4 ohms... use of "digital volt meter" prefereble.
There will always be atleast one cap in a high pass filter, but caps can be a part of a low pass filter ..if we are dealing with a filter of higer order ..read about the topic here
