Although I am not a fan of Infinity speakers this is a deal to good to pass up. Free from a neighbor who is moving, a pair of SM 122's. I haven't seen them but knowing my neighbor I expect them to be in excellent condition. They have been in storage for years. I get them tomorrow. Tried to pay for them but he would not take anything. So, does anyone know anything about these? How do they sound, value, etc. Any information would be welcomed. I just hope I like them. Thanks.

I, too was the lucky recipient of a pair of free Infinity's. A guy in Madison had a pair of RSIII's in very good condition and said on the Bobby Shred Infinity board that whoever wanted them could have them. It didn't take me long to drive the 89 miles to Madison from Winneconne, Wisconsin to pick them up. Nice time to have a big Buick Station Wagon!! These speakers sound great!! I'm debating whether to use them in place of the Quantum 2's I have in my home theater system now for main speakers. The RSIII's don't go as low as the Quantums, but with a subwoofer, I cross over at 50 Hz. anyhow.
Sometimes it pays to be in the right place at the right time. There are still some good people in this old world!!

I like the SM series, but not many others here do. Of course, I may be biased since the SM 150's were my first real speaker when I was a teenager. The SM series are high efficiency, high decible speakers. The SM 122's have a 12" woofer, a sealed midrange, and a polycell tweeter. They play load, deep, and, to my ears, if memory serves me well, play failry clean. But I might just be biased like I said.

I'd be careful, bocoogta, talking about those RS-IIIs around Inspiribomb, he was really hoping (http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?p=345794#post345794) to grab those speaks you took.
Looking at the Infinity-Classics website (http://www.infinity-classics.de), there is some information about these speaks to be found, though sadly limited.
Studio Monitor SM 122
Introduced: 1976
Dimensions: 89,5 x 37,5 x 31,8 cm
Bass: ?? cm
Mids: ?? cm
Highs: ?? cm
Suggested for amplifiers with: 10-200 Watts per channel
Frequency range: 32 Hz - 27 kHz
Crossover frequencies: ?? Hz
Sensitivity: 100 dB
Wight per Box: 30 kg
Suggested price (pair): 450 $
That 100 dB sensitivity looks nice, as well as the frequency response. Though, I've heard most people talk down on this series for some reason.

More good news. I just talked to my neighbor and he told me these speakers are in the original boxes with the original packing materials. He said they look like new. I offered to buy them once again but he said no I'm welcomed to them. I will give a full report when I have a chance to listen to them.

Nice score there Ross! Hard to beat free. Does this mean the Monitor 12's are gonna need to find a new home? If so, I know of a place about an hour north of you that will take them :naughty: . Give us a report when you have had some time with em.

I've heard the SM102 (smaller brother to yours) and really liked them...
I've been searching for a pair ever since...
Why did your neighbor stop using these speakers?

Dang you, so you are the loser that got these before I could :grumpy: . Oh well, enjoy them!

Aaron,
All is not a bed of roses. The four 8" woofers all need surround foam. I removed one of them to inspect more closely and see that these woofers do not have large magnets like older Infinity's. In spite of that, they sound great at very low levels. It will be interesting how they compare with my Quantum 2's and 3's. Pretty hard to match the 12" Watkins woofers in them. Two 8" woofers don't equal one 12" in surface area (113 sq. in. for the 12" cone vs. 50.2 sq. in. for each 8" cone).
Anyhow, I'll suck up the stress of getting them refoamed gladly. The cabinets had a few dings that I filled and sanded and restained.
Sorry there was only one pair. Not very likely either you or I will ever get a deal like that in our lifetimes!!

Well I got the Infinitys last night but couldn't listen to them, had company. However I am happy to report that they are in 100% mint condition. Believe it or not one of the original boxes has never been opened. I will audition them tonight and post my opinion soon.

:thmbsp: Can't beat free! If you end up not liking them, you can always sell them and make a few bucks. I'm sure someone would take them off your hands.
What was up with the neighbor? He didn't like music any more? Or did he have some other speakers he was using? Hard to believe that one of the boxes was never opened. Let us know how they look/sound.

I had a guy pull up in a pickup truck a while back & give me a set of Infinity RSIIIb speakers for free. I had to foam the woofers, but I didn't complain. THey still had the yard sale stickers on them that said "make offer", nobody offered to cart them off, so I got them. They sound pretty sweet tacked onto a Sansui G-9000DB. Also sounded good on my Crown D-150. I tried to give him $10 or so, but he refused.

Ok, I got the second speaker unpacked and contrary to my earlier post it had been used. Funny how the original tape was intact though. Anyway the condition of both is as close to mint as one could find with 10 year old speakers. Sound wise, good in general, a little brighter than I am use to. They have pretty nice bass and mid range but seem to lack a certain clarity that I prefer. Placement in my listening area is a problem and they are fairly close together maybe 6 ft and against the wall. I placed them initially on stands but they are now on the floor and sound a little more balanced that way. Next I stacked my DB Plus 880's on top and the warmth of the DB's are a nice complement to the Infinity's. Bottom line is they are ok. Not my ideal speaker but hey for free not bad. I am pretty critical of all my speakers and just hope one day to find something that is hard to fault.
