I came into possesion today of the following laserdiscs:

Dave (Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver)

Hunt For Red October

Patriot Games

The Fugitive

Top Gun

Sleepless in Seattle

Where Eagles Dare (Richard Burton, Clint Eastwood)

Anybody still watch these things?

I guess I could give them away, but what I'd really rather is for one of you guys to dust off that LDP in your closet and send it to me! :D :D :D

I saw one at the thrift store the other day. Can't remember what it cost because I wasn't really interested in it. You want me to take another look?

Sorry, can't help you here, I have 2 idential Pioneer's, but I'm keeping them as one is part of my "alarm clock" setup. when powered up the CDL-1070 automatically starts playing the CD thats in it. So I get to pick what music I wake to instead of the damn radio station, or worse yet, waking to the obnixious DJ banter that passes for radio entertainment all too often...

The second one will be in my new FR HT setup. :thmbsp:

I got the first at a thrift (paid way too much, $25) and the second at a yard sale, $5  much better,

There on Epay pretty cheap all the time... :scratch2:

I bought a Pioneer VP-1000 back in 1980 from Pacific Stereo. Due to a wierd series of events they never billed me for it. Anyway, here is a link to a pic of the same model VP-1000 (http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_vp-1000/pioneer_vp-1000.htm)

I also think RCA or Sony had another type of video player out around the same time that actually used a needle instead of a laser, am I remembering that correctly?

Yep, that would be RCA's CED sysem(Capacitance Electronic Device, if my memory serves me right). These had a flat needle that read, of all things, the pits and hills on the CFD disc (a foreshadowing of things to come?). It never did very well because everyone was jumping on the high-tech "Star Wars" laser system, backed by big boys Pioneer and Sony. Dirt and wear also played a big role in the consumers not buying another "video record" that wears out. Actually, RCA's ad went something to that effect: A video record". :D

I just recently sold my entire library of laserdiscs on the 'bay. 150 movies went for a decent $200.00 to a guy up north. I also sold my 2 laserdisc players - a nice Pioneer CLD-3090 and a Mitsubishi (rebadged Pioneer).

Down at my local Goodwill store there is literaly a box of about 100 discs in very excellent condition for sale - tagged at approx $1.99 each. I thought about buying them for resale on the bay, but I think I would just about break even, so I passed. I expect them to sit there for a while.

Ed,

Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it. But I want to check my local thrifts first. Just what I need - more vintage gear. Or just more gear.

I regularly find laser disc movies in the stack with albums at the thrifts. Started buying them and then had to have a player. Got one from Grumpy and now find we watch a movie from time to time.

Jimmy: I hate to say it but I would be all over a box of them if I found them in a TS. On something like that I have found I can get a much better price negotating on the whole stack (if I want the whole stack) and save some money. I have done it several times lately on stacks of older comic books I have found in 2 different TS's.

The discs have been there for a couple of weeks. Since I've been through the whole laserdisc era more than a few times, I thought I'd pass. But you got a point. They are decent movies in that stack. If I wasen't so broke right now I'd go back and pick them up (the thought has been nagging at my brain since I saw them). I'll be in a better financial situation next week, so I hope they will still be there.

I ran into about 300 Laserdiscs unexpectedily at a GW last year. First price was $.99. Then $9.99. Then $6.99. then $4.99?? I had to set the sales people straight on them. The first time they were confused with being LP's I grabbed about 35 at that time. I wound up buying in three different purchases around 78 discs. Average price was $2.99. I found an Eddie Murphy 'RAW' disc sold it on ebay for $40.00 so I made up for half my disc purchases. But made the mistake of not getting some of the rarer discs like 'Angel' which is really rare could have sold that for around $50.00. If I found a box again I would be all over em' like white on rice!! Bought 'Robocop' at a GW years ago for $1.99. A few 'Half Price Books' stores around here buy and sell Laserdiscs but at high prices. Usually around $7.98. Once in awhile they send some to the bargain bin for $4.98 and $3.00.
What I like most about them is the full screen versions. Were as some of the DVD releases now days are widescreen only. But the coolest thing about Laserdisc are the rare movies not out on DVD. I just got a few cool ones like 'Wild Life' with Lea Thompson ,Chris Penn and Eric Sholz. Also original 'the Exterminator. Along with 'Bill & Ted's Excellent and Boggus Journey' in full screen not wide screen like the DVD releases. Lately finding Laserdiscs at GW has been impossible. Last lot I saw ended up in the 'auction case' for bids only! That sucks! Anybody out there wanting to get rid of thier Laserdiscs I buy them if they are cheap and I do not already have them. Some of the transfers are excellent occasionally there is a bad one. I have a 'Running Scared' with Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal that is a bad transfer with squiggly lines at the top of the screen. Also you have to lookout for 'Laser rot' which eats from the inside and destroys the picture and eventiually the audio. But making old technology work is very cool to me plus the fact that the discs are analog and are not digitally enhanced or processed is apealling to me. But I still have an exstinsive DVD and VHS collection, but Laserdisc is my most favorite. When it comes to rare and out of print rock concerts and videos Laserdisc has some of the rarest that may never see the light of day on DVD. I have over 75 different rock/metal Laserdiscs concerts and video footage.

I have over 100 LDs. They rarely get watched, but there are some I never expect to find on dvd, especially some concerts, like Paul Simon's concert in the park, John Cougar, and several others. I have toyed with selling the discs and 3 players, but it seems like too much hassle.

Son of a gun... I've got the exact same Pioneer in my HT system! I used to use it as my main CD player... since at the time, it sounded BETTER than 99.5% of ALL other CD players of ANY kind. Now, it's in the system, along with a DVD player, SVHS and SuperBeta VCRS... AND an RCA Selectavision player. Unless somebody shows up with a U-matic tape, I can play it (and before someone asks, if necessary, I can jack-in my roommate's Hi-8 VCR)...

I've since gotten a Marantz LD player, that plays BOTH sides. When I update my HT system soon (I'm getting a Marantz HT receiver, and probably am going to rebuild/build some new L C and R speakers and a new sub), I'll probably sub-in the Marantz for the CLD-1070... but I can tell you, the '1070 will STAY with me... it's just too damn durable and sounds too good to ditch...

Regards,
Gordon.

I currently have a CLD-52 ELITE in the main HT setup. A CLD-3070 capable of some pretty amazing feats in the stereo rig in the living room. And a CLD-980 on stanby waiting to fill a space in a room in my new home soon.
The 52 was my only player for many years. It sounds fantastic, plays both sides with a nice jog shuttle and lighted remote. The 3070 was a new addition this year at a whopping $20.50 minus the remote. I already had the original remote for it from a ebay auction from years back. It also sounds great and plays both sides also has a nice jog shuttle. But the amazing things it does is freeze frame, and complete normal speed intelligable audio with any slow or fast/forward speed selected. Sort of like todays DVD players, but all the DVD players I know only accomplish fast or slow modes without audio?
The 980 is a one sided player and was given to me along with 12 or so Laserdiscs. It will reside in one of the kid's/guest rooms and serve as a remote back up unit. Or when my kid's want to watch Looney Tunes Laserdiscs in thier room. The 52 & 3070 will stay with me, they are just to nice to let go of. On top of that I need some nice players to view my box sets of Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry along with about 110 movies and about 75 music concerts and videos. The sound from the PCM tracks of Laserdiscs are just astounding. So many people are now just dumping thier LD players and movies. I expect to see some really good deals and give aways in the near future for both players and movies. I would like to have at leat one more two sided player. A second 3070 would be ideal!

Must have had about 40 of them. lady assumed they wanted about $5 each for them. I was at my car ready to leave when something drew me back. I ended up buying 11 of them. All sealed. Picked out the music ones, a couple Glenn Gould, Wynton Marsalis in concert, a couple classical concerts, the Godfather, 2001 a space odyssey, toy story and Alladin. The stuff I left was more main stream movies like robocop 2 and 3, aliens etc.

I have a player or two laying around I guess I have to try now. Also picked up a couple Beta tapes to try my lastest Sony out with.

If you can stand to wait a couple of weeks I can go through my old yamaha LD player and make sure it is up to snuff. I too have found them stashed with the albums and at a buck a piece what the hell right. Now I am sitting on about 50-60 of them and the pride of my collection are a couple of Marilyn Chambers movies.
BTW: anybody want Yanni in concert and I will even pay shipping as my wife would probably kick my ass if she knew I had it.

Dude, Yanni fu*king rulez!! Are you serious that you don't like him? What disc is it? Live at the Acropolis? If it is you would do yourself a favor and watch it. It rocks! No really, it does. The Orchestra is simply amazing. The drummer does some unbelievavle playing - better than Lars Ulrich on ANY Metallica CD. The violinists play with metal rage!! :D

Really, it is really good and an even better listen. :thmbsp:

Last night picked up the following discs:

Rock n' Rule- 80's animated futuristic movie with tunes by Cheap Trick, Debbie Harry, Lou Reed -cost: $3.98

Blue Thunder-Letterbox version, damn!does that helicopter sound awesome on the PCM tracks! -cost: $3.98

the Blob-1958 original color movie-from Criterion the finiky picky company that makes exceptional attention to detail transfers -cost:$14.98 little on the high side but it sells for at least that on ebay. Always wanted this. Remember back in the 60's & 70's watching it with my sister on late night TV, oooooscary back then.

brainmasher- what Marilyn Chambers movies did you get? do they play well?

I just knew laserporn would get someones attention. I actuallly have 3 adult flicks and the 2 with marilyn are private fantasies #5 and the legends of porn II. They are decent copies of poorly recorded material. They are rated X so they have sudo plots which makes them more funny than erotic, even though I never have watched them that is just what my friends told me.

I have seen the Playboy discs on ebay, but I had no idea there was porno on Laserdisc. This is news to me. :scratch2:
I remember Marilyn Chambers in 'Behind the Green Door' was an alright porno.

I have three Laserdisc players, two Pioneer Commercial grade units and another Pioneer consumer machine that plays both sides.

I'm a little late posting on this thread, if JDaniel or anyone is still looking for a machine I would part with one of the Pioneer units. They don't sell for much on eBay so I've been hanging on to them

I have always been jealous of the posts here regarding Laserdisc finds at thrifts. For reasons I cannot explain, in 5+ years of looking in the Connecticut area I rarely find any discs at thrifts or at yard sales. I picked up 30 last summer, and found maybe another 10 mixed in with records at thrifts. I can only assume the Laserdisc craze never was never big in this area. I'm looking for more discs, but they need to be cheap !

Paulfxl,
its the same here. You run across a lot then it's dry for what seems forever.
GW is getting smarter and realizing what they are here. I see more end up in the auction section than the retail part of the store. I could be wrong here but I do think that some people are just throwing them away? In all my years I never knew anyone who had a player or discs they were so expensive it kept the frugle penny pincher only willing to part with hard earned money on VHS most of the time. I got a free player along with about a dozen movies. The person who gave them to me had them stored in an unused trailer and the roof leaked and got some of the covers wet. He thought that having to turn over a movie was ridiculous so he just gave me everything.
I am just thankful we have stores here that buy & sell the discs. The prices are not exactly cheap but at least there is some choice here.

I have a MArantz (probably really a Pioneer) LD50 in my HT setup and I find that all my favorite old martial arts films are easier to find on LD. Especially from Japan and The orient. My internet journeys made me the coolest geek on the block for a while because Lucas released Episode 1 on LD in Japan about a year before he released in here on DVD. Also my collection of original Star Wars LDs represents the only viable original cuts available out there. Before Lucas "made them better".

I also have a Laser Disc Player. I got my for Christmas in 1991. It is a Pioneer CLD-980. I basically used it for viewing one of my favorites Sci-Fi shows, Space:1999. All but a two part episode were available on Laser Disc. The two part episode was not put on Laser Disc because of a copy right change over. Now I got all of the episodes on DVD icluding the two part episode.
