Right, as some of you may or may not know, the biggest bad-assed Great white sharks have been living around the Western Cape of South Africa for thousands of years. We've seen them on the Discovery Channel, Nat Geo etc etc. I'm talking about those huge SOB's that jump out of the water when they tow dummy seals past them and then rip the dummies apart. Well there are plenty of these sharks and a whole industry has developed around them for cage diving and the feeding of these sharks for the pleasure of tourists. Just google "great white sharks false bay" and you will get the picture!!!

Off all aquatic recreational activities, which one do you think is least suited to these waters??

Please, If ever in SA DON'T go spearfishing of the west coast!

Keep safe,

Regards

Gerrit

Like one journalist puts it "It's like tying a piece of meat around your neck and walking through the Kruger Park" (lion infested).

You put on a wetsuit with fins to look like the sharks primary food source (seals).

But you don't smell right becuase sharks actually don't like human flesh..

So to even the odds you tie a bunch of dead (impaled by your spear, nice and bloody) fish around your waste.

Look I'm not blasting the poor victim, and I feel very sorry for the loved ones he left behind, but as a local he should have been aware of the risks. It's not the shark's fault.

Sounds like a good beguining for a movie.

Er, waist. But then on second thought, WASTE would be correct after the shark attack.

And it's not just a DEAD fish attached to you, for a while anyway it will be a wounded, bleeding, but still WRIGGLING fish, sending the unmistakeable vibration signal I'M WOUNDED to the shark.

I've gone night-snorkeling in areas where sharks are supposed to feed at night, and I'm still here to talk about it. Maybe I'm just lucky. But I never combined it with spearfishing!
