A few months back I bought a 1971 VW van. I insured it under my regular auto policy and it was around 500.00/yr. A while after I found out about insurance for classic and collector cars for vehicles 20 yrs or older. If the vehicle is NOT used as a daily driver, is not driven to work and is used primarily for car shows and club activities it qualifies. Total cost for the year is only $75.00!!!!

I had to get it professionally appriased and sign a form stating it is not used as an everyday vehicle.

If any of you guys have old vehicles sitting around and are paying high insurance rates, it might be worthwhile to look into.

Is this through Wire Wheels? I did the same thing with the Lotus, went from about $1100/yr (and they damn well knew I drove it about 10 times a year in the summer!) down to about $240/yr with Wire Wheels when insured as a 'classic collectors' car. I think it goes down even more this year now that it's over 25 years old (antique).

These kind of savings make it pretty easy to agree not to do things like drive it into work - the Lotus has to be one of the WORST cars known to man for driving in stop-and-go rush hour traffic anyway.

The coverage is underwritten by the Elite Insurance Company and the plan is called the "Silver Wheel Plan"

this plan has two levels, one is 15-19 yrs old and the other is 20yr and older..

ranges from 75.00 for a 5000.00 vehicle to 434.00 for a 50000.00 vehicle.(in the 20yr category) rates a little higher for th 15-19 yr level. Almost makes it affordable enough to find another old VW.....maybe a bug :naughty:

Same company/plan I use although the details are a little different here in southern Ontario.

I hear you on the price, I thought about selling the Lotus when I was essentially paying about $100 for insurance every time I drove the damn thing but now, it's a keeper :) .

Have my 72 Bug and 35 Ford with Condon and Skelley for about $175 a year, doubt that I will drive either the 2,000 miles they allow for each.
