Artist - Madeleine Peyroux
Title - Careless Love
Year of Release - 2004
Record Label - Rounder / Pgd
Genre - Female Vocal

When you want something other than Diana Krall or Nora Jones, your must give Madeleine a listen. Reminiscent of Billie Holiday, Madeleine's voice is her own. Born in the US, but raised in France, you can just feel the dark smoke filled bar, as she sings. This one is good all the way through.

Yes, that one is on my list to get. A wonderful talent.

Can you wear out a CD? 'Cause I've just about worn the bits off my copy.

One of the best purchases of music I've made in the last year.

This has been my test CD since my wife brought it home. The bass on track 2 is great! It's a wonderful CD- it's always in the changer.

I havenot heard this yet. Is it as good as Dreamland?

Got both and think I like Dreamland a bit better. Was going to say its been on my reference list for 5 years, then I looked at the date on the Dreamland CD. Did it really come out in 96? Has it been that long? I got it when it was first released. Heard an interview with her and a live set on WDET and immediately went out and bought the CD and have been one of my favorites since.

...a fair share of airplay for Madeleine over here in Frogland :)
Not enough to my taste, though - great real voice and feel which should deserve much more exposure.

I bought Careless Love before Dreamland, but I like it a bit better. Both really good, though, you can't go wrong!

Nice stuff!

Humm, I'm not so big on Dreamland. Song selection isn't nearly as good in my book.

Oh! Almost fotgot!

If you like Madeleine, be sure to check out "Ladies Man" by Pinetop Perkins. It's a great CD and she does a fantastic version of "He's Got Me Goin'".

But the highlight of the CD is Pinetop singing "Big Fat Mama". If you don't giggle when you listen to that one you need to be on meds.

On first listen I have to say that I prefer Dreamland over Careless Love, but I couldn’t honestly tell you why – maybe because Dreamland has a bit more edge to me. The Billy Holliday comparisons are on the mark IMO, which is what I like about her vocals, catalogue and her song interpretations. I just love the way a talented female jazz/blues vocalist can carry you back to a simpler time and place, even when they are covering a Bob Dylan or Leonard Cohen tune.

All-in-all a great disk though, a keeper for me that I will enjoy on those evenings that I’m trying to wind down from a truly crappy day.

Good music. I feel the record level is too high though. If I play it after other cds, I have to run for the volume control.

I downloaded both discs online today ,and I have to agree that the Dreamland song selection is superior.
Im a little curious about this trend-young singers doing a retro jazz sound(Norah Jones,Madeleine Peyroux,Harry Connick Jr.,Diana Krall).I think the big attraction to all of these artists is their singing of standards that young people arent familiar with.Great songs are always great songs,no matter how old they are!
Thanks guys for the heads up on another great artist I wasnt familiar with.Im in love with "dont wait too long" from the newer disc, too :thmbsp:

I was just on Vacation with my wife last week. We traveled to Vancouver BC where incidentally they were having the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. I had heard a little about Madeleine Peyroux from the radio and so I was pleasantly surprised to find that she was scheduled for a performance Thursday evening. We purchased her recording, Careless Love, on Wednesday evening and after giving it a quick listen decided to attend her performance the next evening.

The Orpheum Theater is a grand theater (seats about 3,000) that was built in the 1920's and was recently restored to its past glory. This was a beautiful setting to see a performance. Madeleine and the trio did a first rate job, mostly covering the songs that were on the album. The backing trio was able to stretch out more than what one hears on the CD, all to a good effect. If you like the CD and have a chance to hear her live, my all means do so. She delivers in person as much or more than what one hears on the CD.

P. S. Vancouver BC is a great place to spend some time.

One thing I forgot to mention. They announced at the concert that they were recording the entire show and would broadcast it in July on CBC radio. I do not know if they have broadcast it yet. It seems that the Canadians have some good things going for them.

I recently picked up Dreamland. It is a fine CD showing her talents with more varied musical accompaniments. I prefer Careless Love but Dreamland is also recommended. By the way, Madeleine Peyroux is scheduled to perform at the Monterey Jazz Festival Sunday, September 18, 2005.

I got turned onto Madeleine Peyroux a few years ago when she opened for Melissa Etheredge at The Theater @ Madison Square Garden. I was so impressed that I had to run out to the lobby during intermission and buy Dreamland. It's still in my high rotation list and a great album for when you want to be romantic. I also got a kick even before she hit the stage because her guitar player was using the same Crate Vintage Club Series amp I have! BTW try playing Madeleine's Walkin' in the Moonlight followed by Julie London's Cry Me a River. :thmbsp:

Waking up this thread...

I recently obtained a copy of the MoFi pressing of Careless Love from Seth at soundstagedirect. What a talent, what a marvelous album! I have not listened to the CD but would find it hard to believe that it could sound better than this slab of vinyl.

I'll be picking up a copy of Half the Perfect World as soon as the LP is released.

Bought the same lp and really liked it the first time through - always a good sign.

I just installed a new MC cartridge and think this record will be one of my first for a listen tonight.

Half the Perfect World is good, but Careless Love is still my favourite.

Hi
I just found this thread. All of Madeleine's records are great, but I think the pick of the bunch is the one she did with William Galison in 2003/4 on Wake Up Records entitled "got you on my mind' - it has the bonus of Carly Simon on one track (albeit only just...)
Cheers
Mick
