Not so far fetched. When my daughter was little, she would catch these big green flying beetles. They were about as big as your thumb to the first knuckle. She would tie kite string around their neck like and fly them on that leash. It was pretty funny to watch. Somewhere we have a video of her doing it.

Pete-Yeah, those guys are what we here call "June Bugs". Lotsa fun for kiddies, cause they're harmless. Another "fun" bug was a praying Mantis-They were smart enuff to be aware of you. I'd catch 'em, offer 'em water in a spoon, & raw hamburger meat on a toothpick.-Sandy G.

Sandy, these beetles are much bigger than a june bug. They would come around when the fig tree was ripe and feed on the rotting figs.
