View Full Version : Denon 3520 or Sony 559ES/779ES

Hi everybody,

I am in that troubled yet happy place where I am looking to upgrade the digital source in my system. Right now the spinner is a Denon 1520. I love it but need more. The top choices for this upgrade are the three cd-players in the title. I didn't listen to any of them so it is a little difficult to make this decision. My experience with Denon pushes me hard towards the 3520, however the Sonys from the great ES series seem to be cdps really worth considering.

I would really appreciate your help on this.

If it helps here is my current system: HK Citation 17 preamp, HK Citation 12 deluxe amp, Infinity RS6b speakers, Dual 1019 turntable, and Denon 1520 cdp.

i would pick the 779ES on sonic grounds based on everything i've read, but make sure it has none of the common issues they sometimes get.

thanks. i found one in mint condition and I hope the bid doesn't go over my budget :). what common issues are you reffering to?

just google the name of the player along with "issues" and you should be able to find a thread on another board that goes into some detail. apparently the fix just involves some resoldering for the most part, and possibly one new capacitor.

All of these are nice players. If it were me, I'd check availability of replacement lasers before buying any the models mentioned. I think the laser for the Denon is pretty hard to find and expensive when you do. Not sure about the Sonys.

There are various lists online that tell which laser goes in which models of many vintage CDPs. Here's one:

According to :

DAC: 2 x PCM64P - SM5803AP
Laser pickup: KSS-151A

DAC: 1 x CXD2562Q - CXD2560M
Laser pickup: KSS-272A

DAC: 2 x CXD2562Q - CXD2560M
Laser pickup: KSS-272A

Are the Sonys the correct models?

You can google for the laser pickups. In eBay, asking prices for the KSS-151A start at $189.00, but for the KSS-272A there are no vendors.

Thanks a lot for your replies. One advantage with sony xx9 series is that all models use the same laser. In the worst case scenario I can find a lower model and use it as a laser donor. I know it is a big problem as I was trying to find a KSS 140A (the laser of Sony 557ESD) and it seems to be unaobtainable.

rectification: KSS 190A, which I see is used only in very rare and expensive players.

Give me your address and I will send you a modded DCD-1560 board. The two boards are completely compatible. If you like it, you can pay me and if not just send it back. I guarantee you will be very surprised.

I am sorry I misread the model number. Only the 1520 and 1560 boards are compatible.
