View Full Version : Slight Scratchiness and Bulbs Out...Help

Sorry for asking so many questions but I am a new Mac Gear owner and...
My new MA-6200 has plenty of power and sounds great but I notice through the tweeter on the K'Horns (a very efficient speaker) a slight static like scratchiness...is this normal? I bet it has been a bit since this particular unit was played much and it was supposed to have been gone through so that shouldn't be an issue but...any ideas?
I also have two bulbs out behind the glass...are these difficult to change? I did not get a service manual or owner's manual so I don't know what bulbs to get but if they are not too difficult maybe I should replace all of them? Some are dim (dim bulbs? :naughty: ) anyway, as always...your thoughts and experiences will be helpful.
Thanks again,
Bill

Front panel bulbs are 6.3v, 250 ma and 150 ma. #44 and #(18)47 at R Shack. Pull knobs off and it's easier if you take the top sheet metal off. 2 phillips screws on either side and 2 on the bottom. Leave the slotted screws on the top and bottom alone as they hold the glass frame together.

Check all the lamps above the switches.

Switch speaker cables to see if noise follows and ckeck your patch cables would be easiest first step.

Thank you very much...it is like a bacon sizzle and is not great but there...I don't recall hearing this with my Nak but I will try that as well...I hooked up the 1900 and it does it a bit too so possibly just the K'Horns exposing this???
Is changing out the bulbs a difficult thing...danger of breaking the glass??? Are those replacement bulbs colored...do they match the color of the originals?
Thanks,
Bill

Bulbs are clear. Just use yer common sense when pulling the front panel off. Be gentle and leave the claw hammer in the tool box. Wiggle a little when you get screws off and it should slip right off. If you have trouble, flip amp over and take bottom off or loosen screws. Take care with inside of glass and try not to dick around with inside as it's easy to damage the ink and not easy to fix it. :worried:

As for scratchiness, what type of media are you playing: LP/CD/CD-R?

Thanks, Skippy! The F-16I is an Israeli modified American F-16. It's deadlier, more agile and oh so pretty!

Currently playing CDs through them both...thanks for your help...I asked similar questions elsewhere too and was advised against taking the glass out to replace bulbs...I don't think it would be too hard if I am careful...
Thanks,
Bill

Short out the inputs of the AUX on the 6200 and, with the audio level at your normal listening levels, see if you hear any difference in the hiss level.

Generally, high efficiency speakers will reveal the noise floor than less efficient ones. If its the same level in both channels, then I'd suspect that shorting the inputs would have no effect. If its one channel, then I'd suspect a noisy semiconductor in the amp.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

David

It does help and perhaps I am being too picky...I don't seem to hear it when the music playing (although the music may be "drowning" it out) and it doesn't effect the sound but I hear it...albeit only when I put my ear up to the K'Horns...I'll have to try through the Heresys as well...I didn't catch this when I tried some Paradigm Mini Monitors which are less efficient.
Thanks,
Bill

Hey Silversport, I run an older CDP, a Yamaha CD-30, and it has a lot of trouble with CD-R's. There is definitely a lot of static when I play CD-R's.

I just got both of these Friday evening...the 1900 from a buddy and it was hardley played...it has the volume issue but I knew that going in...it sounds great...I am cranking it right now and WOWZA!...maybe I just need to play them more!... :) ...
Thanks,
Bill

6200 is back hooked up and cranking the music...seems to have opened up and the bass is great even when the tone controls and EQ is set at flat (the 6200s EQ)...maybe it WAS just the speakers broadcasting their efficiency... ;) ...
Thanks for putting up with my questions and please forgive my prior nonsense.
Thanks,
Bill

Thanks all...I took the top off and shot out ever so little dust...I tried changing speaker from side to side (this appears to be the left side sizzle/static and the left side "normal" light is one of the burned out bulbs) and the static follows (left)...I tried different speakers (Paradigm Mini-monitors) and I didn't hear it...I tried direct to the wall outlet instead of through my Panamax Max 5100...no difference...I tried the DVD/CD player through Auxiliary 1 and 2...no difference...I moved the speaker wires from Main (1) to 2 and 3 and still no better...I also hear just the slightest hum from the 6200...I need to contact the place I bought it from because it was checked out by them (authorized McIntosh Dealer) and perhaps then off to Terry DeWick...
Thanks again for the help.

Hum. Hmmm.

Something does not seem 100%. Mine is dead quiet.

The highly effecient Klipschorns are shining a light on something that may have been a problem all along, but dificult to hear with other speakers. I have a email-friend who has a 6200/Klipschorn combo like you have, and he says they work splendidly together.

Number 9,
Thanks, I will consider sending this to Terry DeWick.
