[Added 9/29/05 - We are going to start to use this thread to collect data on what tuners are selling for. Since the data in the URLs will be lost after 90 or so days at the end of auctions I will begin to note the tuner model number, condition, the price it sold for, and the date auction ended. I will also give some other notes in the form of abreviations where applicable. They are:
MB = minimum bid
HB = high bid
NS = not sold
OBO = or best offer
RNM = reserve not met
NA = data no longer available or item withdrawn from auction
BIN BEFORE PRICE = buy it now
BIN AFTER PRICE = indicates that someone did BIN
NIB = new in box / NOS
MC = mint cosmetic condition
XC = excellent cosmetic condition
GC = good cosmetic condition
FC = fair cosmetic condition
PC = poor cosmetic conditon
(+) or (-) = can be added to any of the above cosmetic descriptors
PU = parts unit
EI = electronic issues
MI = mechanical issues
SER = serviced
MOD = modded
REC = recapped
AL = aligned
WC = wooden cabinet
WP = wooden side panels
RH = rack handles
FW = factory wired
SC = with schematic
WM = with operator's manual
WSM = with service manual
WOC = with original shipping carton
REM = remote
AML = AM loop antenna
I will slowly begin to update the last three months of data. I think that in the end anyone can come in and get a fairly accurate running average price on the various popular tuners posted.]
There's always a nice tuner on eBay that I can't buy. Maybe you can!

Right now I'm using it with my Sansui digital tuner and Yahama cd player. I need to plug my KT-7300 and KA-8300 combo back in but I'm too lazy right now. It's not a bad little amp. But back to tuners. Here are two ads for the same KT-7500 tuner but one ad has a BIN feature for $75.

Someone else mentioned that maybe I shouldn't broadcast the eBay tuner auction he had his heart dead set on. Still, maybe an AKer will see something he didn't know was on auction and get to buy it because of this thread. My angle is that if more Akers have the good stuff then in the future maybe we'll have a very active AK ad section when they want to make room for more of the good stuff! I've bought plenty from eBay and only had one bad shipping experience but that was enough for me to know that I'd rather deal with people who love vintage audio equipment and KNOW HOW TO PACK IT FOR SHIPMENT! Akers care. :yes:
ps: I also think the CT-7000 (especially the black one) is the most beautiful tuner ever designed. Some people don't care for a design as austere but I'm a big fan of the clean look. I don't know what this one will sell for but roughly three years ago silver ones were going in the $600-$700 range. Black ones commanded $100-$200 more.
Good luck on your search.

Here's a couple of items I deliberately kept off this thread because I thought maybe no one else would see them. (Okay so I'm a rat!) But alas .... I should have known better. If you ever wanted to see what a $306 AM tuner looks like check it out. The second item is the matching AM antenna. The last time similar units came up for sale they commanded an equally high price. It's possible these are the very same pieces.

Drooling time again. If only the wife unit understood that a man can never have too many tuners. And while I'm at it, a general question, why can't women hear the subtle, nuanced differences in the sound of tuners? Are they tone deaf?
Yes, my wife thinks that I am nuts over Open Reel machines, so I can relate. :D However, I must disagree with the second part: My wife can hear the differences. In fact I frequently try to get her input when I have made some mods to make sure that my imagination isn't playing tricks on me.
Its funny, because when we got maried, she only owned a lousy boom box. But after being maried for 9 years, and her only hearing good sounding systems, she can no longer stand it when she hears somthing that sounds bad! No, she's not an audiophile, but she now does appreciate the sound of good equipment.

My wife loves music and will be happy whether listening on a cheap boombox or some exotic system that costs more than 2 or 3 houses. And in reality, that is what it's all about, being happy about the music. In a lot of ways I envy her. Unfortunately as an engineer I love finely crafted stuff of any sort. So sometimes I get lost in the gear aspect of this hobby and other things like cars, wooden boats, tools, and fly fishing gear. Stuff, stuff, stuff .....
As far as tuners I do know how we could curb this sort of endless craving. Sometime in the future we should have a gathering of the tunerholics. Everyone should bring their pride and joy as well as their "secret" discoveries. We would need some good antennas. We could do a group ranking based on double blind testing. It would be interesting.

The Yamaha's are beautiful tuners indeed.. unfortunately they seem to be getting only mediocre reviews as www.fmtunerinfo.com.
I have started to wonder about the validity of the relative rankings as it is apparrent that not all of the tuners have been reconditioned to their full potential.
A full recapping job and re-alignment can make a world of difference to the performance of a 30 year old unit.

The CT-7000, T-80/85 and TX-1000/2000 are some of the most highly sought-after tuners in the TIC. In fact, if you follow their forum, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FMtuners/, you will see that some of the tuner guys on this forum think the TX-1000/2000 is as good as it gets. I think the CT-1010 is one of the most highly under-rated of the many tuners they have listed.
Remember, the shootouts are simply 'one man's opinion'. Not a panel nor the compilation of several reviews. This doesn't make them bad and I appreciate the effort that has gone into this. But the reader needs to be aware that this listing is not a replacement for your own listening and research. Just a good starting point.
I hope that CT-1010 sounds as good as it looks. One of mine certainly does. Another will be headed to Flint for a recap, new filters and alignment once my debt to EW is amortized :yes: and I've paid off the VPI HW-16.5 :thmbsp: . A step at a time. :D
bob adams

Well said B-2. The TIC shootout was just one guy's attempt to rate the tuners according to his ear. He didn't have the time or money to have all of the tuners aligned. People just sent him stuff they wanted rated. I don't think him or anyone else on TIC knew that the shootout would be taken as the "gospel' by so many people. It's affected prices and IMO some good tuners are probably way down on the list because they were tested early on. The same guy who did the test loves his modded KT-7500 and because of it stock 7500s used to easily bring in the $150 to $180 range. Then he tested a stock 7500, gave it a poor rating, and now you can get them in the $80 to $125 range everyday of the week. I think the 7500 and my little 7300 would satisfy the needs of probably 98.9 percent of the people who want a tuner. And the same thing goes for many tuners way down on the shootout list. Think of the positive aspects of that!
Off my soapbox now. That CT-1010 sure is pretty!! :thmbsp:

Reception conditions vary so widely. Up here in Seattle, we have absolutely terrible FM reception. All the hills around cause a mutipath nightmare that maked most tuners sound like... uh, well I think that you know the word I had in mind. :D
What is ironic is that we have some really terrific stations! Many tuners that others might love simply will not cut it up here; the multipath distortion is intollerable. I have heard very few tuners that sound any good up here. The only Solid state tuners that I have heard sound good inside my house are the Luxman TU-117, and the tuner inside my Maranz AV9000. But I still prefer the sound of my slightly modified Mac MR-67 to all others. Fortunately I am in a strong signal area, because the Mac simply is not very sensitive, but BOY does it ever sound SWEET when you have a strong signal! :yes:

Goldenear,
I've always wanted to hear a MacIntosh tuner. But the area I live in doesn't have any place where one could hear them that I know of. And I don't know anyone that has one. One day ...... but until then I'll have to settle on Japanese (and that's not a bad thing.) :yes:
Now for the good deal of the day. That little combination sale of the Kenwood KA-6100 amp, KT-6500 tuner, KX-1030 cassette recorder/player and original packing cartons sold for the grand sum of $89! That is some damn fine shopping! :banana:

Thanks. Got it!! :banana:
I saw that and almost pulled the trigger on it but then I had to figure out where I was going to get the cash to send a money order. In fact I even woke the wife up at 12:30 a.m. to talk her into it. Then I saw "money order or cashier's check" and decided to wait. I waited too long apparently! Glad an AK'er got it.

But to make up for it I'll post something that is rare. Something I didn't really want you AKers to see cause I wanted it all for myself (hey I warned you before I was a rat). But considering the seller has no feedback and is in Denmark I'm a little bit nervous about trying to win this one. It will be interesting to see the final price. I'm wondering if this is the European version of the KT-5020 or the KT-7020? Anyone know anything about this Kenwood?

4 years ago I was watching these sell for $100 to $200 range, and there was always 5 or 6 up for sale! I think the supply is actually dropping so I don't think the price will drop anytime soon. Yes, a $5 garage sale find would be nice!

The Kenwood KT-6040 sold for $118.05. Even with a $55 shipping charge from Denmark it is a very good deal. All nine of the TU-717s sold for prices ranging all over the place. All of the tuners looked to be in good shape. No real dogs. Here's how they went by date, price, number of bids, and details.
Sample size = 9
Sample period = 11 days (9/8/05- 9/19/05)
9/08-$161.00-11 - buyer was golf_of_course
9/09-$112.51-03 - very good picture. davidp5252 got a super deal on this tuner
9/13-$208.08-14 - buyer bonfim59
9/15-$113.50-11 - dhenryp got a deal and this one had rack handles
9/16-$210.02-15 - best pix, buyer was bodhi84, custom maple sides, modded with raised tranny and upgraded with polypropylene caps.
9/16-$167.50-18 - buyer pete_jilee
9/18-$268.89-20 - note this buyer is leo4403, seller kuriouz_goodz with 1019 transactions
9/19-$157.53-12 - note again the same buyer leo4403, seller skytik with 629 transactions
9/19-$180.39-16 - buyer krwelch
High - $268.89
Low - $112.51
Average - $175.57
Average if you throw out the high and low prices paid - $171.25
Median price - $167.50
Not sure what is going on with the buyer named leo4403. Wondering if he decided he paid too much for first tuner and reneged on that deal in order to buy the second tuner. We'll have to watch his feedback.
We'll look at TU-717s in about three months, if and when there is a large enough sample size. Right now the TU-717 is a good deal but that could be because there were so many of them on the market in a short period of time. The Pioneer TX-9500IIs we have been looking at are selling at $200 plus. Unless you just like silver better (and there's nothing wrong with that), the TU-717 is at a better price point. My $0.02 worth. :D

Someone else posted a thread about the Accuphase T-100 that sold the other day for $1025 .... a lot of money.
The Yamaha TX-2000 sold for $510. I really wonder if it's half the tuner that the Accuphase is? Or one-quarter the tuner of the TU-X1? Somehow I doubt it.

Hmmm.......IIRC more than one of the folks on the TIC that are certified tunaholics rate the TX-1000 (TX-2000 is the same in fancier clothes) as the best tuna for both DX'g and sound. If true, then I can't help but believe it is worth half a T-100. Some day I'll find out. Just a full mod on a CT-1010 and ST-J75, a CT-7000 and T-2 away. :D Step at a time.

Guess I was really trying to ask is the Accuphase twice the tuner as the TX-2000? What I should have said was, Somehow I think it is because the Yamaha is probably every bit as good a tuner as the Accuphase and a bargain at the price considering what the T-100 sold for. According to TIC the TX-2000 is not the equal of the Sansui but it didn't sell for two grand either.
I am always amazed at the prices paid for TOTL and/or shootout winners. A Sansui TU-919 will sell for over $600 but a TU-717 will only sell for $112.50? Since I own one I think it's worth more but if I look to the positive what a great deal that guy got the other day.

There was a time when if I'd had the money I would have owned a room full of Adcom. Don't ask me why. I just loved the plain austere look of the stuff. And I really liked the looks of this tuner, particularly the preset buttons. Now I have a Sansui T-E550 and it has presets just like it. Over at TIC they don't give Adcom much respect but I've heard others say they like the tuners just fine. The rule of thumb is, Like what you like, to hell with what other people think! Therefore with that in mind I offer this GFT-555II for your consideration.

I've been watching tuner (almost exclusively solid state) auctions at eBay for nearly five years now and I don't think I've ever seen a better laid out ad than this one. The great photos and the fact that he tells you about Avery Fisher and the history of his companies just makes you want to own this tuner. Thanks for posting it.
And as an aside, if you know a lot about tube tuners maybe you could post more of them here as you see them come up. I want one but really don't know which ones might be the best values. Another question I'm thinking is where am I going to get the capacitors and resistor etc. to match the old ones should they go bad? What about repair manuals?

I never know if I should put up a 'hey look at this ebay auction' posting or not. Seems many here at AK don't like it. I did it 2 hours before close but there were only 4 members on at the time! Of course an extra bidder may have driven the price right up to the unknown limit of the current high bidder, hence you don't know if it would have taken $170 or $500 to get them!
I always search for specfic model numbers, and use the * a lot. Search for Kenwood 800*. But it's amazing what people don't do. A guy recently had an 8007 up for sale, but didn't mention the model number or say FM tuner in the title or listing! And he knew what the tuner was too! He just described it as a top of the line tuner, see the fmtunerinfo site etc. I think he edited the model number into the title a few days before the auction ended because he had no bids.

I don't know why some AKers would object. If they don't want to read them they don't have to. And as far as the not letting the cat out of the bag line of logic goes I'm always amazed at the people who think that if they don't post it here no one will know about it. I've done it myself! :withstpd: Believe me, there are a ton of people culling all of eBay on the odd chance that someone has posted some rare and perfect tuner, amp, speaker etc. under a totally inappropriate category. I always check the Receiver category for tuners but that's about as deep as I get into it. So if someone thinks they are going to "steal" a TU-X1 from some little old eBay noobie widow lady that doesn't have a clue think again. There are probably two dozen other guys thinking the same thing. The point of posting these eBay auctions is to give AKers a heads-up. It's only fair that AKers get a chance at all the good stuff. Then when we have all the goodies we can sell and trade them amongst ourselves in the AK classifieds. :naughty: :banana: :scratch2:

I'd say stick with a Fisher FM-100 or FM-200 if you can get one. There are A and B versions of them (I think) but any version is supposed to be pretty good. Not sure of the values anymore - I stopped looking for tube tuners a few years ago when these sold in the range of $100 to $200...I'm sure things are different now.

Hey guys -
Am a newbie here but - like a few of you methinks - I've gotten into the Tuner thing lately. Have just bought s/hand through a local hi-fi store an Audiolab 8000T for $400 AU ($300 US) - a pretty good deal I reckon! Hopefully this will cure my tuner addiction for a while but.....it's black and I've got a silver fetish!
There's a cheap Rotel 1220 - was a top of the line job in 1973 -78 going at an auction near me - fascia appears good but can't vouch for the electronics - for AU$ 25.

For those who may not know (or care!) we are going to start using this thread to collect data on what tuners are selling for. The data in the URLs will be lost after 90 or so days. Therefore at the end of auctions I will begin to note the tuner model number, condition, the price it sold for, and the date the auction ended. I will also give some other notes in the form of abreviations where applicable. They are:
MB = minimum bid
HB = high bid
NS = not sold
OBO = or best offer
RNM = reserve not met
NA = data no longer available or item withdrawn from auction
BIN BEFORE PRICE = buy it now
BIN AFTER PRICE = indicates that someone did BIN
NIB = new in box / NOS
MC = mint cosmetic condition
XC = excellent cosmetic condition
GC = good cosmetic condition
FC = fair cosmetic condition
PC = poor cosmetic condition
(+) or (-) = can be added to any of the above cosmetic descriptors
PU = parts unit
EI = electronic issues
MI = mechanical issues
SER = serviced
MOD = modded
REC = recapped
AL = aligned
WC = wooden cabinet
WP = wooden side panels
RH = rack handles
FW = factory wired
SC = with schematic
WM = with operator's manual
WSM = with service manual
WOC = with original shipping carton
REM = remote
AML = AM loop antenna
If you look at past posts we now have most* of the data for all auctions. (*Many of the early posts are missing condition data.) With this data you can get a feel for what a tuner is selling for and what tuners are currently good/bad values. Please also note that for us to keep this thread from vanishing we must not post our own auctions or the auctions of our friends. This is a self policing thread, with an AK code of ethics if you will. Thanks in advance for being an ethical poster. :thmbsp:

And I thought I was bad, you win bob! I note you don't list any from Audiogon. Recently a modded by Ammons Kenwood kt 8300 went for 300 and a Kenwood LO 7T went for 210! I tried to buy it but someone went to the guys house and paid cash. Don't know if the Kt 8300 went for the asking price but I thought that was a very good price for that tuner. Tuner looks very nice too. Just noticed another Denon Tu 767 sold on Ebay today for 119. I also won what looks like a very nice one today, price: 36.05. I don't know what I need it for though and I don't understand this price disparity.

....... and I don't understand this price disparity.
Has the Denon 767 been in a TIC shootout yet? Or was the shootout so long ago that the tuner has worked it's way down the list? Look at the data for the TU-717 sales, all over the place. Same thing for TX-9500IIs. No rhyme or reason for some of this. All the more reason to have a database.

I don't think the 767 has been in a shootout. All I know is I got a super deal on a Denon Tu 800 once and it sounded awful. Sold it the next day for a 100 profit, only paid 50 for it and it was like new with manual and box! I think the only reason I buy this stuff is because when it was new I couldn't afford it. Also because when it comes to tuners they're bargains compared to any new stuff.

Bob, main reason I bought the Denon 76 had been because I was at the computer and it was still so cheap I sniped it in the last two seconds. No doubt it sounds like crap imo but I don't have a digital tuner and don't know why I'd want one!
Those cabinets sure look like they're in good shape. I wonder if the one on the amp will fit a 7500 or 8300? Anyone know? Thanks

Bob, that's a very good idea to start compiling data on tuner prices. The TIC doesn't update their prices so they are not always very useful and the Ebay prices disappear into the ether too quickly. This means a lot of work for you but in the end it would be most useful to put the prices in a table by model so you can check prices at a glance instead of searching through a thread. What a great resource this will be.
I edited in the prices for the Fisher and Scott tube tuners that I posted earlier.
warnerwhf
10-10-2005, 12:43 AM
I agree that this would be a good idea. It appears to me that prices on many tuners are less than when TIC listed them. No doubt this would be a job but very nice to have as I always check TIC before buying things.

I figure if grumpy and kami will let us have this thread the least I could do is make the information useful after the URLs are gone. Individuals can do their own searches and cost analysis on tuners that interest them but I will do some work (nothing fancy) on tuners that I feel are of interest to group. Some tuners show up so infrequently that there is no point in trying to find average or median prices. Their rarity and the interested parties set those prices. Others like the TX-X500IIs, T-70s,T-8Xs, TU-X17s, FM-3s, 21XXs, etc. show up enough to get a real feel for what a person should offer if in the market. I'll do this as long as AKers seem interested. Maybe I'll start a companion index thread so we can list the various analyses (by page number) as they are done.

bob adams
10-18-2005, 10:31 AM
I think the seller is mainly charging for the mounting base but I can't imagine why you would have to replace it. Maybe the short squat bulb he is using is a bayonet type and the base was made for it. But even if the old mounting base wasn't made to use bayonet type bulbs you can always file the bayonet post off. Curiousity is getting the best of me. I'm definitely going to pull the cover off my TU-717 to check this out.

It's a good looking Yamaha CT-800. Sokay...looking bidable to start. Then the seller says
"Do not bid or buy until you read and 100% agree with our "Terms of sale"
Nothing unusual about this.
And then
"100% Warranty DOA"
So is he promising that it will be DOA when it gets to you?
And then he goes on to tell you.
"We will try to be helpful with local buyers (the best eBay deals are local) and usually handling cost is US$15.00 for local pickup."
He charges you fifteen bucks to make life easy for him?!!!!
I don't think so. :thumbsdn:
I would avoid this one no matter how bad a Yamaholic you are!
Yamaha B-2

Guess he is going to get his 'rip-you-off' handling fee one way or the other. But, he does has 100% feedback.

Have four ST-J75 (been thinking of becoming the Bunker Hunt of ST-J75s) and they are excellent. A real 'sleeper' amongst tuners with nice, tight tuning increments. If you are serious about wanting one send me a PM.

Four ST-J75s?!! Man you continue to amaze. They must be paying HS math profs big bucks these days. And I thought engineering was gonna be the ticket to tuner possession security. I'll remember you have the Sonys after I get the TU-717 modded and aligned by punkerX, the TU-S77AMX, the T-85, and the big ass antenna with rotor. :D
