Artist: Robert Lockwood Jr.
Title: Delta Crossroads
Year of Release: 2000
Record Label: Telarc (SACD)
Genre: Blues
Robert Lockwood is a master Delta Blues man who learned his craft at a young age from the great Robert Johnson who ‘dated’ Lockwood’s mother. His sound is very ‘Robert Johnson’ and about half the songs on this album are RJ covers.
Lockwood was 85 when he was recorded here but his heavy, intense vocals beautifully match his 12 string acoustic guitar playing. This is a straight up ‘man and his un-amplified guitar’ performance than really can connect you to the emotion of these songs in the same way Muddy Water’s Folk Singer does. Might not be for everyone and can be a little much all in one sitting but when I’m in the right mood late at night and sipping a little single-malt, I love this album.
This was recorded in 1999 at Suma Recording Studios in Ohio direct to Sony DSD with Neumann and Sennheiser microphones. The simple miking and pristine recording are perfect for this type of performance and the emotion and subtlety of the music translates very well in the SACD format – it does a convincing job of putting Mr. Lockwood right there in the listening room to play for you.
