So I saw this bass amp for sale on craigslist and they were throwing in a bass for free. It had the 80s hockeystick headstock, a P pickup and a humbucker and... yes, pink paint. I currently have a 5 string Squier precision with noisy J pickups so I offered them $30 and they said sure. I showed up and found out it wasn't working and had some water damage from a fire. I went for it because I always kind of wanted to make a fretless and for $30 you couldn't lose. So I got it.

I got it home and reconnected a loose wire and it worked. And did it work! It has grotoh tuners and the nut has been properly dressed (not just deep grooves--the strings sit exactly half-way in the nut) so it stays in tune like nothing else. And the sound, well let's say I'm a tone junkie and this bass has the sound I've wanted for a long time--and that's with one of the humbucker coils disconnected . Two of the controls are still really sticky even after DeOxit so I may totally re-wire it, I don't know yet. And there's NO 60 Hz hum... ahhhhh.

But there's still frets and there's still the pink paint. It's not just pink, it's pepto-bismol pink with metal flakes in it nonetheless. The pink color drives my girlfriend crazy so I've thought about stripping it down to wood and going natural or maybe trying another color... or I may even not even bother.

... and then I found 5 dollars (j/k)

P.S. The "photography" is NOT courtesy of yours truly

Wear a sportcoat with the collar turned up and the sleeves hiked to your elbows when you play it, and you won't even look unnatural. Maybe paint on some pointy black triangles and Japanese calligraphy.

And don't skimp on the Aqua Net mousse!

What will your bandmates say when you show up for rehersal with that?

I make Thor proud! However, Thor did have his formerly-pink miata repainted....

The brand is actually "Series 10" and I've never heard of it before. There's only a few Series 10 reviews on Harmony Central but they're decent reviews. For $30 you can hardly go wrong...

My other bass is a sunburst P bass so this will definitely be a change... but change can definitely be good...

Oh, yeah, and it came with this old patterned-cloth strap that has a corderoy lining. It just screams 70s and funk which is not bad if you ask me.

Dude, don't mess with that finish. Keep it original. If you ask me, it is really cool just as it is. The eighties where a long time ago, and this thing screams new wave. Play it with pride, man!

Despite my new wave oriented comment, upon further consideration I'd-a said it screams hair metal.

... I don't know if I can go for the hair metal--I just don't have the spandex. :puke: :puke: :puke:

I think I'm going to leave the finish--much to my g/fs chagrin. However, I did have an idea today. I like checkerboard patterns and all the hardware on the bass is black so I'm going to use black electrical tape to make a 3-square wide checkerboard pattern underneath the strings. I think that would look cool.

...while I was meandering through the smiles I found this one--it would be me(only with a slightly different color):

This is the general idea. Any better ideas than electrical tape? I don't know how long the electrical tape would last. Maybe black duct tape.... I just like checker patterns...

Dude, that thing DOES scream hair metal! Can't you see some dude in sparkles and spandex prancing around with that trying to look sexy? Sassy!

Does Con-Tac paper come in gloss black? That would stay in place. Or check at Murray's or Pep Boys for black auto striping tape.

When you get tired of black, you could peel off layers of shelf paper to reveal other colors. Accompanied by costume changes.

Calling all cars, calling all cars. PJ is now fleeing dressed as a nun and playing a bass covered with...you'll love this...duckies and bunnies.

Man, I hope you know what I'm referring to or you'll think I've completely lost my marbles

Marbles? What Marbles?

... is that a blues brothers reference? You may have to remind me on that one Whiskey...

Johnny Dangerously. Johnny (Michael Keaton) and Lil (Marilu *rowr!* Henner) drive a getaway car covered in multiple layers of shelf paper which they peel off to disguise the car - unsuccessfully.

LOL :lmao: That's funny!

However, my favorite getaway scene is still from the original Italian Job.
