There has always been one thing that puzles me about my pilot 240 amp. What is the purpose of the automatic shutoff switch? Upon engaging the switch, the amp just shuts off. Is this supposed to happen? The amp power switch is part of the volume control, so I'm not sure if this is some kind of protection circuit, or just another power switch. Anyone have any knoledge of this integrated? I rebuilt it and it sounds wonderful for EL84s, just want to know what that switch is for.

Thanks in advance,
Jordan

jpdylon,

The automatic shutoff switch was used with record players such that when the record player was turned on the amplifier would turn on and at the end of the record when the changer mechanism turned off the record player the amplifier would also turn off. This was a good feature if you wanted to fall asleep to music but did not want the amplifier on all night after the last record played.

Hmmm....good idea. I'm guessing that in order for the phono to shut off the amp you would have to connect it to the phono motor plugs in the rear of the amp? Neat. Thanks for the information.

Yes, that is what the plug on the back is for. By the way, the Pilot 240 is a great sounding unit and can easily run with the Heathkits, EICOs Scotts and Fishers.

I'm a tube newbie and attempting to recap a Pilot 240 integrated. I planned to mount the can caps underneath because I cannot find the multi section cans of the correct value plus individual E caps are cheaper. But right off the bat I cannot see where the negative leads go except for one 40 uF cap to ground. When you rebuilt your 240 what did you do? TIA.

The original design used the outside of the can as a ground. Just look for the twisted tabs on the bottom side of the can. Some may or may not solder directly to the chassis.

Interesting and fortunate for me that the Pilot 240 threads just came up. My 240 will be my first tube rehab. I just opned it up this morning and really don't know where to begin. I understand that all of the caps should be replaced but not sure where to begin. I have a schematic and I guess I should start by inventorying the parts needed. Then I need to follow these threads and learn of sources for the components. Should be fun.

Here is a parts list I made and ordered. It won't replace everything under the chassis, only those parts I considered it would be good to replace. Note that I did not order replacement power supply cans. I choose to use individual electrolytics mounted under the chassis. I think there's room.

Thanks. That will help a lot. I'm going to try not to get overwhelmed and take this project slowly.
