AM Question

I have a Pioneer AFT14 tube tuner I am having issues with. First let me say FM works flawlessly. But AM is terrible. It only gets 2 stations and one of the comes in for most of the dial. In other words you can rotate the tuning dial from one end to about 3/4 and it plays the same station. To top it off I swear that station is FM.

Any Ideas where I should start looking? All tubes check out OK on my tester.

is the AM variable cap (tuning cap) actually turning as it should? Sounds to me like maybe there's slipping between the tuner dialcord and the cap -- maybe the cap's shaft is galled and not willing to turn?
