Thor got me motivated- my red '72 Capri made it into the garage today for the begining of a tear down for the body shop! I didn't do too much in the 100 degree heat, but it's started and I'm excited!
I'll get a pic of my limited progress here in a bit!

I remember those Capris! Cute little buggers, and really decent with the German Ford V-6's, if I recall. Pix! Pix! Pix!

Your post takes me way back...
I had a 1974 Capri, V6 2800, 4 speed.
I bought a conversion kit that replaced the stock carb with a Holley 2 barrell.
I installed a set of headers and a free flow exhaust system.
289 Mustangs disappeared in my rear view mirror.
True story.
I really miss that car.

I have two of them, both '72s. They are my only means of transport, so I had to make sure the blue one was "good to go" before I tore into the red one.
She's a 2600 V6 with a 4 speed. You're quite right Thracer, in sock form, the '72 V6 Capri is the equal of the 289 Mustang.

I'll be adding headers, an Anza exhaust and a Webber 40 DFAV- all new parts, and all ready to go. I'm also installing a 5 speed transmission, and I'm thinking about A/C. Here are a few pics after today's work:

Looks good Ed... can't wait to see the finished product! :thmbsp:
Always like those little Capris!
Kinda funny tho... back when I had my modified 68 Toranado, some
friends as I were making a fireworks run down to Missouri and on the
way back, moving along at 75MPH, we starting to hear this "whining"
sound, we looked all over, but couldn't find it...
Then, in the rearview mirror, I noticed a little 72 Capri trying it's little
heart out to gain on me. It took him about 5-10 minutes, but he got
in front of me and turned on his turn signal and pulled in front of me
all the while his daughter was bouncing up and down in the back seat
cheering her dad on!
After he finally got around me, I pulled over to the passing lane, moved
up along side him and waved "bye-bye" and proceeded to accelerate to
100MPH it what seemed like nothing flat! :D
I'll bet that the little Capri was a four banger model and probably a bit
worn out. :)

Well, to tell the truth, top speed highway blitz isn't the Capri's strong suite. Seems like my 4 cylinder will do "high speed" cruising better than my V6. But 100 mph is about tops for both of them. Maybe 110 in the V6. But it sure puts up a fuss getting there! The 5 speed will help that a lot!

Fast Eddie,
My V6 2800, with the Holley carb, headers and custom dual exhaust could do 120 easy. I did it many times on the local freeways. Ok, I was much younger and lots more stupid back then. Must of had a guardian angel looking out for me!! Makes me cringe when I think about it, now.

There's an Offenhauser manifold for the 2600 on e bay right now. I might have to get that. I could put the Webber on my 2 liter. I've had it on there before and it really wakes that little motor up!

I had a 71 2000 "US" and a 76 1600 in europe. I always wanted a 2800 circa 1980
when I was in Belgium. Very quick cars.

I wish we had gotten the later Capris here in the US. I had a '76 for a while and had big plans to "update" it to the later style. There are a few folks here who have done that. I always wanted a "Brooklands" 280 from '86. Unfortunately the '76 was totaled before the transformation could be done.
Ed
(edit) By the way, I've been told that the MkIII Capri wasn't imported because the Capri had been making the Mustang II look bad. Ford had a lot riding on the new for '79 Mustang and wasn't keen on importing a better car. So the "Fox" chassis Mustang was rebadged Capri for that model year. It's a real shame as the MkIII 280i was a wonderful car by all accounts.

Well, it's taken me a bit, but the engine came out today. My son (9) actually jacked it out with the cherry picker we got at Sam's club. Sure did the job, no muss, no fuss. I've never pulled an engine before and was surprised just how easy it really was. Nothing compaired to dropping the transmission. I'm going to see if I can't put them back in together.
I might grab a pic or two. It was interesting to see when I acutally started taking it apart. Not too bad, really. Should be ready to go to the shop next weekend.
Take care,
Ed
I wanted one of those soooooooo bad when I got out of high school (1974). But, they were kind of rare around here. There was a professor at ASU that drove one for years and swore that it was the best car he had ever owned.

If anyone is interested in a Capri, I may know where there is a very nice one for sale. It's a '76 "MkII", meaning it's the kind with a hatch back. It's a "Black Cat" model, which is a very nice black and gold option.

Wow, it's been 6 months since I started this. It's finally ready to go. I called the body shop on Friday. They should haul it away this week. Engine out, doors off, glass out, hood off, wirinig harness out of the engine bay. It's about as stripped as I can stirp it. It was a lot more work that way, but I know I'll get a better paint job for it. And hey, you can't get over spray on the interior if the interior isn't there!
Dear God, how long is it going to take to put this all back together!? I'd wager longer than the 6 months it took to take apart! Well, the timing is good. I'm not sure how long they will have the car, but I'm guessing I'll get it back just in time for spring weather. Never did get the heat hooked up in that garage of mine.
Take care,
Ed

I feel for ya man I remember stripping the Miata, putting it back together is much more fun though. But stressful! Putting that first careless scratch in it really sucks :(!

Thor, you did yours much faster than I've been moving. I just can't seem to get motivated to get out there and work on it. Like you said though, I think once I see that baby all looking like new I'll feel differently.
I'm fairly sure I'll put a scratch or two in it while I'm working. This is my first attempt at this level of work. I have decided that the engine will go in from the top and the transmission from the bottom. I am working alone, and even though everyone tells me it's easier to put them in together, I know I'd beat the fire wall up pretty badly if I tried it that way.
Oh well, I'm not looking to make a show car. I'll drive this every day in the nice months. I'm affraid my poor blue '72 gets the snow tires and tough weather duty.
Take care,
Ed

Yeah I had my son helping me too. Plus we never pulled the engine bay. The underside of the hood and the engine is still white and covered in oil and grease. We'll be tackling it soon :( Not looking forward to it at all. I wish my OCD would just leave me alone and let me just drive the car ;)

Before I bought my bike, I had a 94' Mazda MX-6 V6LS. I took that car all apart and painted it flat back. My parents really enjoyed the whole process. :scratch2:
I loved that car. It was fast as hell. It had a hell of allot of shit done to do it though. Just a bit shy of 400HP and 365Ft.Lb. Whooo Whoo, yea it would do 140mph with out a problem. I always like racing American "muscle cars"

LOL.
Actually it took 36 cans of spray paint, and about 8 bags of steel wool. :D
If I can find a picture in my computer I'll post it.
It looked good. It looked really good. Kind of the hot rod mantra from the 50s but in a 94' Jap import. It sounded awesome too because I labored over the exhaust system for well over a year until I got the power and sound just right. Sure as shit didn't sound like a angry bumble bee with the Crane cams that were in it. I miss it bad...
My 900RR is faster though so it's all good.

Went to the body shop today to get my wife's car looked at. That's another story. But I did get to visit with the Capri! He said it should be ready for paint in a couple of weeks. Needs to visit the frame rack for a bit I'm affraid. It's a little worse off than we knew. Glad I took it to a shop that will take the time to make it right.

I like those cars, I had a 73 Capri GT 2600 V6 4 speed. Mine would peg the 140 mph speedo but it was a German model bought there and brought back and was not US spec'd or exactly factory stock. Wish I still had it.

Yup, mines a 2600. Ported heads, big cam, headers, Weber 40DFAV all waiting to be installed. It should scoot along just fine. At 2300 lbs. or so, it doesn't take much to get it going.

I surprised many guys driving Z28's and Mustangs when something that sounds like a Cesna passes then walks off and leaves em with their mouths hanging open. Mine drove like it a go-cart you could hang the ass end out with both tires up in smoke if you wanted but very easy to control. Mine was bored oversize w/flat tops, cleaned up ports & surfaced heads, Crane cam, Weber carb, dual point distributor, true dual exhaust. All in all was a fun little car.

Very nice there Fast Eddie I remember many of those from back in the days when I worked for Kenz&Leslie. Back then we had more performance parts then anyone east of the Big Miss!!! The retail stor downtown used to play with those for folks and with the right combo they are fairly quick!! Very cool little cars. Can`t wait to see the finished paint and project, Good Luck!

I'm affraid so. Mostly my fault, though I knew it would take a while. They're working it in between better paying gigs. I'm getting a pretty steep discount. Then there was a lot of me just lolly gagging on it. They needed a few parts and it took some time to get them. Hell, it's been six months of me making up my mind on colors, and after all that I'm going with the stock red. Oh well. But it's going to be a very sweet car and they're doing an outstanding job.

I've got a 1962 MGA 1600 MKII, and eventually I'm going to repaint it. A good friend of mine who has done a lot more car work than I have said that painting a car is a lot like playing a guitar...it's very easy to get started, but very difficult to master. Sounds about right.
At this point I'm torn between trying to do it myself, and paying several thousand dollars to have it done right.:sigh:
Fast_Eddie
09-24-2008, 07:52 PM
The thing is, to do it right, you have to totally strip the car. All the glass, everything. And that is a LOT of work. If the car is a basket case (like mine) then replacing pannels also takes a very long time.
dokblues
09-25-2008, 10:22 AM
Thats the ONLY way to re-paint a car, it has to be stripped to the bare minimum no glass no interior and no wiring. Oh ya and a substitute set of wheels and tires to roll on and get paint on.
