View Full Version : Who isn't in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but should be
Mark B 07-17-2005, 10:35 PM It's obvious that something other than a group or artists contribution to the field of Rock & Roll is involved in being named to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
What group or artist do you think should be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame but isn't?
My top nomination: The Moody Blues.
foetusized 07-17-2005, 10:58 PM Motown backing band keyboard player Earl Van Dyke needs to join his fellow Funk Brothers James Jamerson (bass) and Benny Benjamin (drums) in the Hall of Fame -- Foe

tentoze 07-17-2005, 11:28 PM Man, I got nothing here.
:lurk: :lurk:
gearhead 07-17-2005, 11:53 PM How do you find out who has been inducted?
I went to rockhall.com but didn't see anything.
I'm getting tired, tho, and that may have something to do with it.
If he's not there now, he should be-Link Wray.
It ticks me off how they never think of some people until they die.
RocknRoll 07-18-2005, 12:01 AM Full list. http://www.rockhall.com/hof/allinductees.asp
WhiteSE 07-18-2005, 12:23 AM Well, as I read, the boss was one of Atlantic exec's when YES was big, Ahmett something....Its a fact that he his pissed off at them for some reason...i think for not selling out...
That museum is a joke, its mainly filled with one hit wonders, who should only get a little time on some VH-1 program or other.

Mainly one hit wonders? I think you need to look again.
WhiteSE 07-18-2005, 05:38 AM well, not mainly, but many,,,,
Reel 2 Reel 07-18-2005, 06:32 AM I also have to agree with The Moody Blues...they shoulda've been in there years ago...
I may be a little biased ..because the only other forum I post regulary on is a Moody Blues (http://www.moodytalk.com/index.php?) forum...but
Anybody would be hard pressed to name any other band that have been consistantly touring as long.
No retirement tours... then comback tours when they need money to support their drug habit...
If your a fan ...check out the 'Continuing Story' in the 'Coffee Talk' (http://www.moodytalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=30) ...There is a story in there I have been writing....
mg196 07-18-2005, 06:42 AM Lou Reed. He is in with the VU, but not as a solo artist.

Ummm...WRONG!

gonzo 07-18-2005, 10:38 AM Ditto,on Parsons
grumpy 07-18-2005, 10:43 AM All I can say was I was very disappointed when i visited the R&R HOF...
Is Michael Jackson in there yet? If not he should be!
grumpy 07-18-2005, 11:08 AM Last time I was there you were greeted by MJ's red leather suit as the first exhibit in the door. Thats when i knew my visit was gonna be a huge let down..
mg196 07-18-2005, 11:09 AM Is Michael Jackson in there yet? If not he should be!
Perhaps he should be in a "special wing" with other like-minded artists: Gary Glitter & perhaps Pete Townsend.
Drybasement 07-18-2005, 11:15 AM Jethro Tull although Ian Anderson is the only original member. Martin Barre came on board in 1969 after Mick Abrahams left. Anyway, it would be nice to see Jethro Tull get the nod along with the names of all previous members but I'm certainly not holding my breath and I seriously doubt it will ever happen.
WhiteSE 07-18-2005, 11:30 AM I think there are a lot of artists in there that dont deserve to be there ahead of many bands like Yes, Genesis, ELP and others...yeah most of those names are well known, but it doesnt mean that they have the longevity, quality that these bands have..
elroymcgee 07-18-2005, 11:37 AM What about ELO, they had a couple hits in there day
WhiteSE 07-18-2005, 11:39 AM ELO, there is an example, they had a couple of hits...and were big for bit..is that enough to be in a Hall of Fame...?
foetusized 07-18-2005, 11:40 AM Is Michael Jackson in there yet? If not he should be!He's in twice, both as a solo artist and as a member of The Jackson Five.
I have to agree on Gram Parsons, and seem to recall some news articles about Black Sabbath's absence -- Foe
OvenMaster 07-18-2005, 11:41 AM I'm looking at the list and thinking that sooner or later, everyone who sold records in any quantity will be there.
Tom
elroymcgee 07-18-2005, 11:42 AM ELO, there is an example, they had a couple of hits...and were big for bit..is that enough to be in a Hall of Fame...?
very true, but not sure if they deserve to be in the hall though, I change my mind, and now, what about RUSH that should be a gimme.
mg196 07-18-2005, 11:47 AM Perhaps he should be in a "special wing" with other like-minded artists: Gary Glitter & perhaps Pete Townsend.
Oh, I forgot about Dave Holland, the drummer for Judas Priest. Hmmm...I wonder how large this wing of the museum could be?
juncers 07-18-2005, 11:58 AM Just scanned the list-- I think it's fair to say they don't like Prog Rock bands. ELP, YES, JT,Genesis ( original not the Phil Collins show) etc. I can't argue about most of the people on the list, but there does seem to be glaring prejudice. If I remember correctly, the critics hated prog rock in the 70's, so that probably has something to do with it!!
Ray
elroymcgee 07-18-2005, 12:00 PM Chicago, or KC and the sunshine band, America, Alice Cooper, Toto,
Van Halen, Hall and Oates, Joan Jett, Journey, Jimmy Smith, Buddy Guy, just to name a few
ForeverAutumn 07-18-2005, 12:10 PM Chicago, or KC and the sunshine band, America, Alice Cooper, Toto,

KC and the Sunshine Band? Aside from That's the Way I Like It, what else did they do? Please prove me wrong, but I'd be putting them in that one hit wonder category (or pretty close to it).
The bands that immediately came to my mind as beeing snubbed to date have already been mentioned...
Yes
Genesis
Rush
America
Geeze, Rush hasn't changed a member in 30 years! How many bands can say that? That fact alone should make them worthy.
modge 07-18-2005, 12:33 PM I agree with Jancers as well as Robert Wyatt often overlooked.
elroymcgee 07-18-2005, 12:36 PM what else did they do? Please prove me wrong, but I'd be putting them in that one hit wonder category (or pretty close to it).
1. Get Down Tonight
2. I'm Your Boogie Man
3. (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty
4. Please Don't Go
5. Keep It Comin' Love
5. Boogie Shoes
6. Sound Your Funky Horn
But to be fair, it was disco, btw 1-5 were all #1 hits on the billboard, and as I was breezin through the thread I missed the groups I listed, thanks for bringing it to my attention

I'd forgotten that he (they?) had so many hits. Or maybe I just blocked it from my memory. ;)
Journey is another good one. :thmbsp:
foetusized 07-18-2005, 01:08 PM Can I change my mind again? Joy Division is already eligible, and New Order will be at 25 years since their first album next year -- Foe
tentoze 07-18-2005, 01:08 PM I guess I would have to know who is already in it to form an opinion about who should be in and isn't. Sounds like way more trouble than it's worth to me. Still ain't enough to get me to go to Cleveland. Ya'll g'head.
What about ELO, they had a couple hits in there day
Well, maybe not "ELO" per se, but at least Jeff Lynne, since he was everything that made ELO tick, as well as his being a member of The Move, Travelling Wilburys and his work with Tom Petty and The Beatles anthology project.
CarlV 07-18-2005, 01:52 PM I never paid attention to the H.O.F. before. It is an odd list of inductees and actually playing rock 'n roll is not a requirement for induction as a performer. :headscrat
Carl
CarlV 07-18-2005, 02:04 PM No John Cippolina? :(
Carl
Micropassatman 07-18-2005, 02:04 PM I would've said Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, or the Scorpions, but heavier R&R seems to get passed over. What's the secret about Dave Holland? Did he pulla Jerry Lee Lewis when I wasn't looking?
foetusized 07-18-2005, 02:14 PM There are categories for "Early Influences" who performed pre-Rock-and-Roll styles, and for "Non-Performers" such as songwriters, producers, and others in the music industry -- Foe

But you got your souvenir glove, right?
Arrrrgh if you knew how much we PAID for that thing! And we don't even get the induction ceremonies.
Pete
Balthazarr 07-18-2005, 02:49 PM I agree with Jancers as well as Robert Wyatt often overlooked.
I believe Soft Machine fits into Prog Rock which seems not to be considered by the HOF judges as Rock and Roll.
There are many groups/artists that deserve to be in the hall just due to creativity and uniqueness and others that are that shouldn't have made it.
WhiteSE 07-18-2005, 04:34 PM Well, I will never put a foot on that place till YES and Richard Thompson get in...
Johncan 07-18-2005, 04:48 PM The Monkees...
I am not kidding.
schoolboy 07-18-2005, 04:52 PM Number one missing person:
LINK WRAY
Without him surf rock would have never existed. He twisted rock ways that it needed to go, and so many owe a debt to him.
I have a guitar player friend who would differ with me but he doesn't like to let anyone who discovered the easy, primal stuff get credit (including people like the Kinks).
Fortunately (I am being sarcastic) ANYBODY can get into the Rock Hall. I've been very involved with the hall since the beginning. I met Chuck Berry at the ground breaking, I've met countless other people there like Les Paul and Bill Wyman, I've been there hundreds of times and I look at it all day - my office overlooks it (fantastic view), but I am a big critic of the hall too. Many exhibits are boring and they really have let in too many un-deserving people. Bob Seger?? Come on.
Andyman 07-18-2005, 05:06 PM At first, this guy struck me as a wise ass type nomination, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense, especially if you're 45+.........
Ed Sullivan
LOTS of us saw folks for the first time on his show, and I don't mean Topo Gigio or Jose Jimenez either
clint e. 07-18-2005, 06:13 PM Van Morrisson.
kerozene 07-18-2005, 06:30 PM Peter Gabriel?
Balthazarr 07-18-2005, 09:30 PM Definitely Gabriel, no question.
Innovative, creative, sold many millions of records/cd's.
I would be interested to know what the criteria are for selection bc it seems to depend on the mood the selectors are in at the time.
Ok, I'm being facetious.
I would vote for Camel and Curved Air and Tangerine Dream even Depeche Mode.
uriah Heep 07-18-2005, 09:53 PM How about:
Black Sabbath
Deep Purple
Richie Blackmore
ELP
Rick Wakeman
King Crimson
And Uriah Heep :)
WhiteSE 07-18-2005, 10:19 PM Uriah Heep?? yeck!!!! lol..not even John Wetton could save those guys!
Mike Bama 07-19-2005, 02:32 AM Just scanned the list-- I think it's fair to say they don't like Prog Rock bands. ELP, YES, JT,Genesis ( original not the Phil Collins show) etc
Phil Collins joined the band in 1970, about 18 months after the *first* Genesis album. I think he may qualify as an *original* member. It would be hard for the *original* Genesis to get in, and not include Collins. He only became the lead singer after Peter Gabriel left in 1975. Seven months later Genesis released what is probably their finest album, A Trick of the Tail.
Mike Bama 07-19-2005, 02:35 AM I would vote for Camel and Curved Air and Tangerine Dream even Depeche Mode.
Deep Tracks, XM channel 40 plays alot of each of the above's music. I really like Curved Air, and Tangerine Dream.
juncers 07-19-2005, 04:06 AM Mike,
I rate the earlier albums more, but that's just an opinion. You're right-- I should have said when Gabriel AND Hackett left the band and Collins took over. :)

Mark B 07-23-2005, 05:01 AM Below is a fairly complete list of artists/bands that have been mentioned in this thread as deserving to be in the R & R Hall of Fame:
Alice Cooper, America, Black Sabbath, Richie Blackmore, Camel, Chicago, Curved Air, John Cippolina, Deep Purple, Depeche Mode, Earl Van Dyke, ELO, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Peter Gabriel, Genesis, Gram Parsons, Iron Maiden, Jethro Tull, Joan Jett, Journey, Joy Division, Judas Priest, King Crimson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Monkees, Moody Blues, New Order, Lou Reed, Scorpions, Jimmy Smith, Tangerine Dream, Uriah Heep, Van Halen, Rick Wakeman, Link Wray, Robert Wyatt, and Yes.
Oh yeah, nearly forgot KC & the Sunshine Band. :D
Mark B 07-23-2005, 05:03 AM Already in the Hall:
Van Morrison (1993)
Buddy Guy (2005)
Mark B 07-23-2005, 05:06 AM Also not inducted (yet) and deserving IMO is Three Dog Night.
Micropassatman 07-23-2005, 01:27 PM What is the criteria for being inducted? I think Three Dog Night quit making music decades ago. Can they still get in?
Mark B 07-23-2005, 01:38 PM Induction Process:
Performers
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artist’s contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.
The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of about 1,000 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes, and more than 50 percent of the vote, are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.
