I am constantly changing my current music tastes and always looking for something to explore.
I stumbled onto incense and peppermints (strawberry alarm clock) and something from the 13th floor elevators.

I know these two bands are common. What are you suggestions on some other psych rock to look into.

Bunch of it out there, and I'm no authority on it,but try:

Love ~Forever Changes
United States Of America ~anything available
H.P Lovecraft - I don't have any with me in Vegas, but there's a live album around that's pretty out there
Spirit ~ just about ANY, but Clear has always been a favorite of mine.

CarlV should probably be answering this one- he knows his stuff.

Rhino has culled a good selection of psychedelic music. If you're not sure what you're looking for, this would be a great place to get a taste of what was out there. For example: http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=75466

As far as Spirit, I've always loved "The Twelve Dreams".

I also like 'It's a Beautiful Day'.

As far as bands? What tentoze said plus
Big Brother & Holding Co., Blue Cheer, The Chocolate Watchband, Iron Butterfly, The Collectors, The Pretty Things, Quicksilver Messenger Service
(s/t), It's A Beautiful Day. There is a good start anyway. I have loads of this music if you need more suggestions.

12 Dreams is muy bueno, of course. I have a MoFi cd of it that is excellent. But Clear has Dark-Eyed Woman on it, which is just about the ultimate mega-volume, driving-rhythm, let-the-neighbors-hate-me song for me.

If you want to try something a bit off the wall, give "Mass In F Minor" by The Electric Prunes (Reprise, 1967) a listen. Very progressive for its time. "Kyrie Eleison" was featured in the movie (and soundtrack of) Easy Rider.

I know what you mean.

I stumbled a time or two to the 13th Floor Elevators/Spirit/etc., myself back then.........

:naughty: :naughty: :naughty:

If you can do streaming audio, try the "classic underground" rock feed from www.3wk.com. If nothing else, you may hear something you like and be able to find out who it is. They have a free feed and a paid feed (higher-res for $). They claim all their music is from vinyl.

Jefferson Airplane/streetmasse playing right now. Now Humble Pie/Every Mother's Son.

Enjoy

Country Joe and the Fish, "Electric Music for the Mind and Body" Excellent stuff!

The Steve Miller Band, "Children of the Future" is trippy stuff too

Also check out these bands:
Moby Grape
Rotary Connection
Blues Magoos

Oh yeah, there was this guitar player named Jimi Hendrix most folks thought was pretty psychedelic

Wasn't that Hendrix a backup guitar for King Curtis? Wonder whatever happened to him......

I've heard tell the early Pink Floyd LP's were kinda trippy. The Chocolate Watchband's Inner Mystique is positively killer with one side psych and the other classic garage. The first 13th Floor Elavators album is a must, natch. Steve Miller's Sailor has some moments. Hmmm, Spirit and Love are just plain excellent, categories be damned. Newer bands you might want to investigate would be Monster Magnet, Massive Attack, Mogwai and Spock's Beard plus Porcupine Tree for starters. Oh yeah, check out these guys: www.sundazed.com/

What ho? I've seen no mention of the Dead thus far in this thread?!? :-o

Also please consider:
Live/Dead
AOXOMOXOA
Anthem of the Sun

The latter is probably the most 'out there'... but it is too far out there for me!
I really like AOXOMOXOA; try to find the original LP mix as well as the remix (the Rhino CD with bonus tracks is quite good).
Live/Dead simply defines the Dead's brand of psychedelia in the mid/late 1960's.

I would like to hear more of your thoughts.

Did you look at the Rhino link? I would be pissed at myself if I bought it. Flame away! :)

Are you after some of the heavy or light stuff, all, time period, more feedback please?

I was looking for a link to give you for Fever Tree. They were my first live show in 1967. The s/t and For Sale are really great. For Sale is an album after they split up of music with a gospel backup but still Fever Tree. Side 2 is their Hey Joe, everybody and their brother did Hey Joe, but theirs is a very cool version and worth buying the album for.

I so wish the first 5 grooves of my copy of The Inner Mystique did not have a tick. :worried:

Yep, and that album got panned at the time with most saying it was a cash-in of Sgt. Peppers. But I've always found it to be great fun! Also, it has some great songs such as "She's A Rainbow", which was used to great effect on the Apple I-Mac TV ads.

Man, I hadn't thought about Fever Tree in decades.....I saw them sometime back then, and I know I had the S/T album early on, but certainly no more.

Interesting list I found here (http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_albumspsych.html). I note that my beloved Pearls Before Swine occupy 3 spots on that list- not bad for a a group that not that many heard even at the time, and certainly not many since.

I looked at the rhino link but did not listen to any of the samples.

As far as what I am looking for, I really dont know.

I like Rolling Stones " Their Satanic Majesties Request" front to back.
I think the use of different and off instruments and ways the volcals are changed is what draws me to this Genre of music.

As far as time line I really dont know. I am familiar with hendrix and stones and the more popular stuff (more popular by todays standards) but I gues Its just the sound that I am looking for.

I have lots of listening ahead of me. Thanks for the help as always.

I forget, man... was that, like, the white jacket or the purple jacket, man....? :-)

That one was remixed too, wasn't it?

I finally broke down and bought a copy of the original AOXOMOXOA mix on that popular on-line auction site. It was really refreshing to hear -- "What's Become of the Baby?" is almost listenable in its original form! The sound quality is really excellent too.

"Anthem" is still a little too avant-garde for me, though!

Yep...yet another 45 from my youth. Also don't forget Steppenwolf's "Magic Carpet Ride" and although they weren't really pyschedelic per se, early Procol Harum and The Moody Blues are essential too!

Yes indeedy do.

Spent the day with the "2400 Fulton Street" collection playing in the car. Perhaps their best psychedelia is my personal fave "After Bathing at Baxter's" I love Hot Tuna too, but wouldn't call them psychedelic, just damn good folky blues.

Maybe I just oughta go and check out all these old records I still have from high school and see what's there. I guess Cream's "Disraeli Gears" is right up there too

TA, you are correct in capitalizing PROCOL HAREM as psychedelic! I saw them twice in the 60s and they were FAAAAR OUT! (TA, I got the caps & got your old KLH 52 working beautifully again.)

Andyman, I was at a few Hot Tuna concerts that were dripping in psychedelia. Jorma & Jack could really take off into the stratosphere when they wanted to.

But no one was as far out as Hendrix. He was a exponential trip (hey, did I just make up a new phrase??) If you never experienced the joy of listening to these cats in person, you just gotta get ahold of those live and studio bootleg recordings out there!
