View Full Version : New music that doesn't suck...

I see a lot of people bashing new music, and if you base your assumptions off of top 40 radio, it deserves it. I can't stand the stuff they play on popular radio, but lately I've found myself stagnating by listening to the same albums over and over.

But I think there has to be good music out there, it's just not coinciding with what's popular at the moment. So I'd like to hear some opinions on good new bands and albums. Mostly looking for rock suggestions, but any genre will do.

Tool....nothing pop about it..but I wish they (the radio stations) would play something besides 'Sober' and 'Schism'....

Audioslave.. Not really a Cornell fan ..but good musically...not just the bland ..two string power chords garbage...

the New Country.....not that bakersfield stuff from the 80s and 90's...but the recent stuff....theres more traditional Rock in it than Country...songs about good times...instead of that "tear in my beer " junk...

No tear in my beer?  :D

Or "I'm Drinking My Beer and Rolling My Truck Over You" or "It's Been Lonely In The Saddle Since My Horse Died" or "Last Night My Pickup Truck Left Me"....

hehehehehee

I haven't heard much new to catch my ear, except a smattering of indie acts. Bigger Than A Breadbox http://www.biggerthanabreadbox.com/ is a great organ/guitar/drums rock trio worth checking out. They're out of New York, they kick butt. I'd bet they'd get a strong response from airplay if you could ever shove those worthless piece of crap corporate acts out of the way long enough...the world has had entirely too much disposable, inconsequential "music" promulagated by disposable, inconsequential suits.

I love The Kings of Leon. I have seen them twice and will be going to see 'em again next Thursday.

Death From Above 1979 (DFA1979) is also pretty cool.

speaking of DFA, on the label of the same name, is LCD Soundsystem. really interesting and physically compelling dance/punk. also, just heard some Jaga Jazzist, and man! i'd been reading about them for a while and finally heard and i was just stunned.

so there's two.

Well as far as the radio goes ... it's a sad sad wasteland. Except for the college stations and, I must admit, an oldies station on the AM dial here in the Chicagoland area ... but the over the last couple of years I've been pleasantly surprised by bands like:

Franz Ferdinand from Scottland .... if you like Talking Heads, Roxy Music & Gang of Four - you should dig F.F.

Riverboat Gamblers outta TX .... ass-kickin rock-n-roll! "Something to Crow About" is a killer album & their live performance is exhausting.

The Bellrays - not sure where they're from ... but Imagine Tina Turner just got fed up enough with Ike to beat the snot out of him and then she told Iggy Pop to take a hike and started fronting the Stooges.

Mooney Suzuki has been puttin out some fantastic records ... 70's flavored Rock-Boogie-make-you-wanna-get-naked kind of stuff.

and Chicago's own Phenoms put out a record - literally! - earlier this year that will toss you round your livin' room, make you beg for air then kick you around a little bit more. Wow! the music seems to leap off the disc (it's available on vinyl & cd) and it just go-go-go's. Garage rock, punk rock ... whatever - the album Smokes!

yikes ... I could go on & on - but I think that's good enough.

Enjoy!

Where to begin. Where to begin. Here's some of the recent releases that I've been spinning...

The Trews
Boy
The Killers
The Kaiser Chiefs
Snow Patrol
The Redwalls
And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
British Sea Power
Queens of the Stoneage
Jet
Rheostatics
Scissor Sisters
The Thrills
The Zutons

This is all great stuff ranging from metal to pop. Some of it is getting some radio play on the alternative stations and others will likely never make it to radio. But anything on this list is far better than the dreck that makes it to top 40 IMO.

if you cannot find good new music... then either the ears or the mind needs opening up a bit :scratch2:

sure todays mastering techniques are killing dynamics... but I can honestly say as a musician that every week I'm finding something new to digest and enjoy.

just a couple recent 'new release' purchases I've made...

ForeverAutumn, I gotta second that vote for The Trews. House of Ill Fame is my most-spun album of 2004. Catchy as hell, but damn near impossible to locate in the States. I had to get mine through my company's affiliation with the Canadian Inependent Music Awards (at which the Trews won Best Canadian Rock Band).

If you can find a copy, buy it!

Hi Ben,
Even better....if you get the chance to see them live, do it! They really rock in a live performance!

I'm so glad to find another Trews fan! Outside of Canada that is. I've been giving them quite a push to my American friends but they just aren't catching on. The difficulty in finding the CD may be a big part of that.

FYI. They have a new CD being released on Aug. 16. I saw them live (for the 2nd time) in July and they played a few songs off of the new disk. It's sounding good!

They're starting to get some much better exposure these days. They've been signed to open several shows for Robert Plant. The Rolling Stones are playing a small club in Toronto tonight as part of their tour rehearsal, and guess who's opening for the Stones tonight? Yep. The Trews.

If their second disk is as good as their first, I think that you Americans will be hearing more of them as the new disk gets promoted to a wider audience.

Thanks for helping to spread the word about my favourite Canadian band. :thmbsp:

Speaking of Canadian bands, Wolf Parade will be releasing thier first full length album at the end of September. They've already gained quite a reputation for themselves based on a few ep's that they've released. The new album is produced by Isaac Brock from Modest Mouse; another good bad worth mentioning.

I also suggest checking out The Sea and Cake as well as Sam Prekop. Jazzy sounds from Chicago. You can't go wrong, however I prefer the Sea and Cake's more recent releases.

All rock-n-roll in some way, all from 2005...

Mary Timony - Ex Hex
Medications - All Your Favorite People In One Place
System of a Down - Mezmerize
Gorrillaz - Demon Days
White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Billy Corgan - FutureEmbrace

Some of the better albums from this decade...

Tool - Lateralus
Mary Timony - Mountains
King Crimson - The Power to Believe
System of a Down - Toxicity
The Cure - Bloodflowers
Steely Dan - Everything Must Go
Living Colour - Collideoscope
Weezer - Maladroit
311 - Live in New Orleans DVD
Dream Theater - Live at Budukan DVD

I could go on... I used to feel the same way about new music, but once you plug into what's going on underneath the pop mainstream, I have more albums to listen to than I have time to listen... a wonderful problem to have!

The new "stuff" started passing me by around 2000-2001. It was either way too damn much hip-hop, too poppy, or if it was metal, every lead singer sounded like a drill sergeant (Scott Stapp, anyone?). Plus, as my father always said, your tastes change (for pretty much everything; women, booze, music, food, etc.) as you get older, so now I'm leaning towards the more laid back stuff. My pick for my "favorite" band of this decade would be Coldplay (X&Y to me, is weaker than the first two), and I really like Keane. The Keane cd sounds fantastic on the right gear; through my Grado headphones I hear stuff I never heard listening in my car. Fair warning; bands like this are a little melancholy, but still worth a listen.

Ana da Silva :The Lighthouse. :thmbsp:
This is a magic record from the singer of The Raincoats, Ana da Silva. The Raincoats always collaborated on ideas and songs -- and played guitars! With this album, The Lighthouse, Ana da Silva wanted to do something different -- some-thing she hadn't done before. She decided to buy a small digital instrument which has lots of sounds, a mini keyboard, and a sequencer (you can programme all the notes and beats into its memory). All of the album, except 'Modinha', was recorded with this instrument and her voice onto an eight track digital recorder. Sometimes this was all very overwhelming, but at least it's all as she wants it to be, having written, played, recorded and mixed the whole album herself. For her, making The Lighthouse was a really challenging and stimulating experience -- she wants the songs to express feelings and to create worlds in which the listener can roam in their own particular way.
A dreammy electro-folk magical vinyl or cd. :thmbsp:

Of course even with the similarities to other great bands, the Shins are still original, and very good. They're one of the greatest bands of modern times if you ask me.

As far as new rock goes...its too bad the radio around here anyway doesn't spin any 'Porcupine Tree'...

I have been spinning them lately...also something that progger turned me onto a week or two ago...called 'Hidria Spacefolk'.. which could be comparable to early Pink Floyd back in the Syd Barrett days...but more musical and not relying on sound effects...just a good ole Jam Band!....

Take a minute or two to check this guy out. He has audio files and the money goes to him. I have heard about 15 of his songs on our local public radio. I would call him a Country, folk artist with a Zappa sense of humor and the heart of Johnny Cash. Some of his songs will break your heart and others make you laugh out loud. You can't go wrong if you like twangy guitars and clever lyrics. :thmbsp:
