View Full Version : AR Modders...More Rejoicing!
ddarch 08-07-2005, 09:50 AM Hi all,
It's been a looong time coming, but an upgraded subchassis for the AR mid-eighties turntables is available once again. Designed by Anthony Scillia and Mr. George Merrill himself, it even improves upon the subchassis' available years ago.
Made to Anthony's tight quality specifications, it is as much a work of art as a functional turntable part. See Link.

IronRinn 08-08-2005, 04:26 AM Oh man. I gotta start saving my pennies. :)
Russellc 08-08-2005, 09:02 PM Yes, this will be great, and I'm going to order one pronto. Anthony is the man who made my armboard, stainless threaded spindel/bearing shaft and delrin inner platter, acrylic patter, extended studs and Linn springs/grommets and lead mats. These mods are Also improved "Merrill" clones. With the new sub chassis , all thats left to being full blown is the motor/power supply and Moerch tonearm. At one time, i wanted the Merrill mods so bad! Now that there's a chance to get them again, I'm going for it!

I'm with you Russellc, I have most of the mods available thus far, minus the inner and outer acrylic platters and newer motor , but will rectify that soon, as well as pick up the sub chassis. :D

Cool, I would like to hear about your experiences with the mods as they go. I usually post here and on the audioroundtable.com's vinyl forum. Which model did you start with? Mine is an AR "The Turntable" which I have had a few years. It is in fairly mint condition as is the cover. Sounds like you have the armboard already? What arm are you using? I got on Anthony's list for the subplatter, but am not sure if I will want it machined to fit my current arm, or make the move to something better. choices, choices.

Yes, mine is also the AR "the turntable" in mint cond. I purchased it from the US specifically to mod, and have so far fitted the delrin armboard, stud and spring kit, and a merrill lead mat, all of which have improved performance tremendously. I fitted an RB300 arm which has been fully modded by

I did consider a few arms such as an SME, but in the end just purchased the rega arm already modified.Chalk and cheese opposed to a standard RB300. I currently am using a Koetsu Rosewood (borrowed from my Luxman PD350) and it sounds great, but am considering trying a Garrott Optim FGS MM cart, or possibly a Benz Micro Ace.
Decisions, decisions :)
I will next buy the inner and outer platters before finally looking at buying the sub chassis. Have to save first.

Apparently that's your worn-out raggedy-assed ol' Luxman in the pic on AudioOrigami?

Hey Bouddha- yes thats my Luxman.
Im in a bit of a quandary, I am focused on getting this AR table of mine as good as I can get it, and then once I have it finished it, it will be used in my second system (you can never have enough turntables :D )
I will then look at upgrading to a better arm for the Luxman. But it's a slow process :sigh:
bOUddha 08-09-2005, 10:41 PM Good onya!
My second system is spun by a $46 YP-211 Yamaha, inclusive of cart & shipping... :sigh:
I see a Sota Sapphire on the horizon, however.

Very nice. The inner and outer platter further refine what you have already done. Alittle blacker background and more detail resolution. The Arm, armboard, lead mat and springs really switch up the performance. I will eventually use this as a second system table, have got my eye on the Teres stuff for the main system. I've got to say however, that a full blown Merrill is much better than you would think! Back in the day i listened to one that was destroying all comers, MUCH to my surprise at the time. They really sound better than they have any right to. On the other hand, a full blown one w/ arm and all is 2 grand pretty quick, it OUGHT to sound good. I got on anthony's list for the sub chassis, supposed to be ready by end of the month.
