Sandy G 08-07-2005, 07:44 PM Mine aren't quite as esoteric, but still managed to get my adrenaline going-"Born To Run" Bruce Springsteen, "Twilight Zone", Golden Earring, "Baba O'Reilly", The Who,"What Is Life",George Harrison, "Don't It Make You Wanna Dance", Jerry Jeff Walker...all that come to mind right now.-Sandy G.
clint e. 08-08-2005, 08:52 AM Hey Sandy,
of course the musics and the bands you mention are very important bands and great songs, but if you like the really Rock'n'Roll raw sound with fun and atittude like it was in the start,i think you should give yourself a try and listen to some of this Rock'n'Roll avoided by the radio stations.
Have fun. :thmbsp:

Mike Gibson 08-08-2005, 09:52 AM Three songs come immediately to mind. Telestar-Tornados, Take my Breath Away-Berlin and Dead Heart-Midnight Oil. The last one sounds great at volume .

Mike Gibson 08-08-2005, 11:07 PM Hey Clint, find some Buddy Knox & Buddy Holly stuff. Buddy Knox had a real hit with Party Doll and Holly had many hits. Also listen to some Dire Straits from your age. Then you can hear what Rock-N-Roll sounds like that still contains some melody :)
clint e. 08-09-2005, 08:48 AM Yeah, Buddy Holly is eternal, and Buddy Knox made Party Doll a great big Hit.
I'm listen to a band you all know pretty well, and for some reason nobody gives them the real credit they deserve.
Cheap Trick!!! :thmbsp:

Mike Gibson 08-09-2005, 09:59 AM I have heard a few of their (Cheap Trick) songs and like what I have heard so far. I'm going to go pickup some of their music when harvest ends and I can go to town. Where I live the the only FM stations are a country station, a bubble gummers classic rock station and a new wave station that plays white noise and one classic rock station that plays good stuff to death. So not much in the way of choice here :)
grumpy 08-09-2005, 10:18 AM Montrose's Rock Candy. My fav song for Gentleman clubs....when i was a gentleman. Always got the ole heart pumping. :)

Of course Punk is one of the driving forces for "new music that doesn't suck"
of today .But,before punk starts in 76 other raw music was very important, even for Punk Rockers.
...Garage Bands ,Rock'n'Roll,60's Psycadellia,Undergroud Blues that's what i think is the kind of music that were big influences of yesterdays Punk and today's new music.
Bands such as The Standells, The Sonics, The Seeds and in addition to the inspiration of those "garage bands" of the 1960s, the roots of punk rock draw on the abrasive, style of The Velvet Underground the snotty attitude and aggressive instrumentation of The Who ; the sexually and politically confrontational Detroit bands The Stooges and MC5; the UK pub rock scene such as The 101ers,Dr.Feelgood and political UK underground bands such as Mick Farren and the Deviants; the New York Dolls, and some British "glam rock" or "art rock" acts of the early 1970s, including David Bowie,T.Rex and Roxy Music.

clint e. 08-22-2005, 04:50 PM Les Rita Mitsouko . :thmbsp:
Rita Mitsouko are a duo who never attend fashionable parties, they have been together since their teens and play almost all the instruments on their records. They recorded their new album in London with producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie,T.Rex, M.S.Preachers). Jean-Luc Godard filmed the sessions for a documentary. Mitsouko is the name of a perfume. Rita is the name of a girl.Their names are Fred and Catherine. They have a young daughter, Ginger.
"The important thing for us is to be able to work at home in Paris on our eight-track. We were both born in Paris and we couldn't work anywhere else because all our friends and family are there. Working in London for us didn't have any particular importance. We sent our tapes to Tony Visconti who said yes straightaway. It's our music that is there, our moods and our presence, the things we've had in our heads for years. He sort af polished the rough edges."
clint.
clint e. 08-26-2005, 08:38 PM Tokyo Sex Destruction. :thmbsp:
Some say that the mighty James Brown has a bastard grandson near Barcelona; and we're starting to think it's true, because RJ Sinclair, Tokyo's frontman is absolutely the craziest guy we've ever seen on stage.
In terms of music, we can relate them to The Sonics, MC5 or Sly and the family Stone.
Their lives appearances with the Tight bros. , the Mooney Suzuki, the Fleshtones, Standstill, Zen Guerilla or their yet legendary show at the Sant Feliu Hardcore Fest 2002 have proven that only they know how to deal with the cliches of rock and roll, leading them to an almost esperpentic, yet elegant way to perform live, controlling the situation and seducing the audiences night after night.

clint e. 08-28-2005, 11:48 AM Dead Combo : :thmbsp:
Where western-spaghetti sounds meets fado, jazz and caribean music.
Soul mates of the the New York band with the same name.
Somewhere in the beginning of the 21st century, they [Dead Combo] met around the corner, in Lisbon city two wanderers, one a thin “fire horse” born in 66, a loner with a top hat and wrinkled face, the other, tall, born in 1970, who came from the dark world of Jazz, starsign “dog”, both swore to avenge the dead and resuscitate the living.
Influenced by Comics, they have misspent nostalgia in their pockets and the deaf soul lost in dark films. They play Lisbon, the city of the countryside, of the chimneys and of the white domes sceneries of a lost past, “fado”, western wanderer everything together in a voodoo of emotions, the Tagus, the lovers that go different ways abandoned angels on the crossroads of destiny, flowers with mixed up colours, saints, flaming chambers, naked guitars, spitted and thrown to the street, basses on fire, top hats chickens on the loose and things that roll in the street. there standing against the wall in the middle of all this mess, both of them bitting apple sins, while looking at you... :naughty:
The band Dead Combo is composed of two elements:
Tó Trips - electric guitar.
Pedro V. Gonçalves - double bass, melodica and electric guitar.
Formed in 2003 by the occasion of a recording a tribute to the great portuguese guitar player Carlos Paredes. :thmbsp:
Enjoy.

clint e. 09-03-2005, 04:03 PM The Adored. :thmbsp:
Cool upbeat power pop, from the LA-based is a wonderful blast of gleeful power pop... catchy sub-three minute blasts all infused with great gang sing-along backing vocals and just enough snotty attitude.
Energetic neo-garagistes,with the help of Pete Shelley [Buzzcocks].
A style that flavors some of our old favs The Clash, Buzzcocks, The Jam, and Blur on tons of speed. :naughty:
If you dig new wave's present uprising and 70s style, you'll adore The Adored.

clint e. 09-05-2005, 03:13 PM The Broken Beats. :thmbsp:
Who is he who is not tempted to rave that the new Broken Beats-album sounded like a vintage version of Country a la Calexico, that it lighted choral fireworks as we know them by the Poliphonic Spree, that it disposed of the elegy of the Beatles, that it was charged with a good portion Kurt Weil’s ease and of Zappa’s folly – and so on, and so on…
Some pics are Lemmy from Motorhead with The BBs.

clint e. 09-11-2005, 04:02 PM Antony and the Johnsons have won this year's Mercury Music Prize for the album I Am A Bird Now.
The Mercury Music Prize was voted for by a panel of industry experts, journalists and artists, and is said to reward originality and creativity rather than sales success.
Simon Frith, chairman of the judges, said "Antony and the Johnsons won because they produced "such an extraordinary album. Some of them hate it, some of them absolutely love it - but nobody can ignore it."
"When I first heard him I knew I was in the presence of an angel,"said Lou Reed,
His amazing band contributes to one extraordinary experience of musical wit, depth and, most of all, beauteous heart."
Laurie Anderson :thmbsp: has echoed her partner's comments, calling Anthony and the Johnsons "my favourite band in the whole world right now".
"Listening to Anthony's voice is like hearing Elvis for the first time," she said.
When he sings it is the most exquisite thing that you will hear in your life."
"I Am A Bird Now is my favourite album this year," Portishead singer Beth Gibbons :thmbsp: has told the BBC News website.
"I felt its honesty immediately and had not been that touched by music in a long time.
"He has expressed how I feel about being a woman better than I have myself and created an unnerving, unworldly yet direct impression of our fear of death and life's solitude."
A great album with a beautiful voice. :thmbsp:

clint e. 09-16-2005, 06:45 PM Born Edward Heeran in Albany, New York. He's the leader of Los Straitjackets.
The direction Eddie went with the guitar took him into genres far from the mainstream. Over the years he's become an influential player in rockabilly, garage, roots-rock and surf. He's played in The Bad Boys with Tex Rubinowitz and The Planet Rockers with Sonny George, led Eddie Angel's Dinosaurs and The Neanerthals, and as a solo artist he recorded a hot little album called Eddie Angel's Guitar Party that is still a favorite topic of discussion among garage fans ten years after its release.
This kind of music is almost timeless. Old roots, new sound. :thmbsp:
While the band hates to drop names, their fan base contains a higher-than-average percentage of celebrity admirers, including (but not limited to) such notables as Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarentino, Jackson Browne, Rob Zombie, Tom Petty, Jimmy Buffett, Jeff Foxworthy and Dennis Rodman.

Bogframe 09-23-2005, 01:32 AM Sorry about the bad thumbs, got them off the net. The Good Rats were called The World's Greatest Unknown Band. If you ever get a chance to hear their stuff from these albums, you'll know what I mean. I'll never understand why they never made it!
clint e. 09-25-2005, 06:25 PM GANG GANG DANCE _ is a four piece out of NYC.
The idea of ‘experimental’ and ‘underground’ is dissolving away. Today, more than ever, the odd and unique are more accepted (and more sought after) than ever before. Bands like Animal Collective, Wolf Eyes, and Black Dice are receiving critical praise and selling more records than their forefathers could have ever hoped for. I don’t think this has anything to do with some great awaking of the musical tastes of the masses or anything like that… I just think people are increasingly sick of what the majors are feeding them, and they are seeking out something fresh and new. What a great time to be bold and unapologetic. :D
The unpolished rhythms, the imperfect melodies will hypnotize your ears like a skilled snake charmer. The off-balance nature of the mixing of influences will have you cocking your head like a confused dog at first, but slowly the album reviles itself as a meticulously planned effort. :thmbsp:
Some records you fall in love with in their entirety. Only with time and effort do you begin to discover the subtle intricacies and details that lend to a fuller, richer interpretation of the whole. Gang Gang Dance succeed in back-loading this theory, forcing the listener to dedicate themselves piece-meal in the full understanding of this creation:
God's Money.
You want to get lost in the mellow bliss. You want the hazy tone to infect your brain. You become listless and fluid, and you soak into whatever piece of furniture happens to be beneath you. You’ll let the raw energy of God’s Money enter your body and affect your psyche. If you aren’t interested in hearing this album after reading that, then you are hopeless. :D

clint e. 10-01-2005, 07:50 PM It’s time for a real look at post punk. Lay down your Franz Ferdinand, Bloc Party and Futureheads albums, if only just for a minute, and pay heed to Gang of Four. Where a slew of modern acts charged the pop charts and charmed the masses with post-punk, Gang of Four was there – about 20 years ago, no less :D – working the bugs out of the post-punk recipe.
Now, following the spike in interest in the British band that pushed the Gang to return for a series of tours, the band heads back to the studio. While the jury’s still out about writing and recording new songs, Return the Gift is their next best thing: Re-recorded versions of songs taken from the band’s three studio records. It’s a perfect introductory course for anyone still in the dark about the post-punk pioneers, as well as a great addition to any lifelong fans’ collection.Dance punk rarely sounds as danceable or as punk as when it’s in The Gang of Four’s hands.
The band’s sound made it visionaries, but King’s lyrical vision made them heroes.
Pics : Gang of Four with Juliet Lewis , Beck and Live in Tokyo. :thmbsp:

clint e. 10-09-2005, 09:38 AM It seems that Liverpool has always been an important location for nurturing and developing musical talent. In the 60's it gave us The Beatles, the 80's Echo and The Bunnymen, the 90's The La's and The Lightning Seeds. While more recently it has given us amongst others The Coral and The Zutons. Therefore it might not seem shocking that another up and coming band also has its origins their, they are The Dead 60's. :thmbsp:
Liverpool has always had a strong musical legacy and perhaps it is this that drives the bands on, forces them to take chances and push themselves in directions others may shy away from.
They have their debut out now.In Cd and Vinyl.
clint.
clint e. 10-10-2005, 08:04 PM So this is how the garage explosion winds down, just as it did in the '60s. Songwriters become more mature, tempos slow, orchestration creeps in, arrangements become more subtle. Brighter moments become brighter, while darkness and trauma take on suitable hues. No longer can the music sustain “red with purple flashes”; to shake your sound to pieces is not a sustainable option as your anchors of longevity dig deeper into the watery floor. :D
It’s just the way that things go. Mark E. Smith from The Fall once said, “Do you do what you did last year? Well, don’t make a career out of it.” :naughty:
After three albums and over six years of goodtime party rock battery, here is The Deadly Snakes first wholly clean break into classic singer-songwriter territory - Porcella. :thmbsp: A sign of great things to come.

clint e. 10-18-2005, 03:50 PM Do you remember DEVO ?! :)
They were the guys whose videos and danceable anthems, using art-school chutzpah, brought an ideology of cautionary anti-consumerism and anti-conformity to the mainstream.
With a big flavor from Devo or The Plastics, the Japanese POLYSICS put out some wonderful spazzy electronica punk:banana2: with the recent release of their Polysics Or Die!!!! Album.

A VERY Favourite is the Coverversion of the Passenger, esp. because i NEVER heard Siouxsie that funky, fresh and undepressive again - i really didn't expect this when i stumbled over it. I love it. A lot of people covered the passenger... but this is the best.
i like Cash a lot with is American recordings.
and - i like the most of that notsonoisy funpunk bands from UK - i was ~18 when i heard sexpistols, ramones, uksubs and all that stuff in 1977... hanging around with stiff hair :)
btw Julliette Lewis isn't only worth a look, she's a good live act with the Licks. Was twice in Berlin last year... she is Fun on stage!
and: under my thumb is the ONLY Stones title i really like!

They play Delta Blues, Boogie Boogie, and a little rock'n'roll. They sang in Spanish all their adventures in life - girls, sex, work, fiesta - almost like a Jug-Band. :D
Their album is out now :

clint e. 11-23-2005, 08:11 PM I saw this man live in concert in Valencia, and i was so amazed that i search the web for more info :
“…his raw songcraft is terrifyingly effective at communicating the breadth of human emotion… beautiful, damaged, naked and utterly compelling.”- THE WIRE
“The quaver in Mr. Banhart's voice is as shaky as his songs' connection to everyday reality...his songs and fragments ponder animals, apparitions, logical leaps and childlike certainties, all with credible eccentricity.”- THE NEW YORK TIMES #2 ALTERNATIVE ALBUM OF 2002
“It's been awhile since an obsessive, naïve, utterly original musical visionary…emerged from a private sanctum into the embrace of the rock cognoscenti. But we've got one now.” -THE LOS ANGELES TIMES
“He possesses a warble I won't soon forget, and if that isn't the mark of a classic balladeer I don't know what is… If part of a folk singer's power comes from the purity of his conviction, then Banhart's promising debut is the sign of someone destined for great, strange things.” -PITCHFORKMEDIA
Lynn Rapoport, cultural critic for San Francisco's Bay Guardian, agrees, saying "It's so much more about, 'Why does this music make me feel like I'm experiencing visitations by angry ghosts or someone else's nightmares?'"
