I picked up a few nice pieces yesterday one of which is a nice TEAC A-4010SL Reel To Reel deck. I cleaned it up. I pulled the front and rear panel off to inspect it. I cleaned and lubed it up a little. I got the selenoid to the pinch roller freed up because it was very stiff and wouldn't engage. Everything is clean and looks like it would work fine but for two problems.....first I need a belt...It was just a ball of goo! Secondly it appears that one of the reel motors (the right one facing the front) is frozen up. I took the reel tables off thinking they may be hanging up but you can barely make the hub move with very much effort!

I'd like to know if it is likely that the motor is simply no good (burnt out?) or is there a chance that it is just locked up or frozen and something could be done to fix it or check it out? My research tells me that the reel motors are direct drive and the capstan motor is belt driven. I saw that during my inspection. Where would I find a motor? Only from an old donor machine I'm sure! Would they be the same on the older A-4010? Where is a source for belts? I refurbed a X-7R and I got a belt for it from NJ Parts. Are there other sources? I have 3 other R2R's the X-7R a Pioneer RT-701 and another TEAC 1230. I really don't need another but you know how that is! I can't resist!

I know that Vintage TX and a couple of others have an A-4010. What kind of suggestions can you give me to get this old beauty back into operation? I can provide pictures if they are needed. Thanks! Franksta

Hi Franksta, congratulations to the Teac. :thmbsp:

You can order a drivebelt from Bob in Colorado =

Are you sure the motor is frozen and not just the brake is enagaged ?

Let me know what you find :)

Vintage is right. Bob at Vintage can solve your belt issue. Nice guy. Took care of several of my belt problems and light bulbs on several of my Pioneer receivers.

The reel motors are fairly easy to clean and lubricate but again take Rolf's advice and look to see if a brake is pushing up against it. I would oil all three motors as it probably been awhile since thats been done.

No you can never have enough. Got a 1230,4300, and a 7010. Bidding on a Pioneer RT 707 which I need like a hole in my head. No place to put it :headscrat.

Good luck. The 4010 was a beast. Big heavy and well made!! Worth a little TLC. Have fun

Hey Franksta,
I was just sorting through my parts stash from dissassembling my 4010S just last month. (Original owner since 1968). Alas, no motor - but I do know that Vintage TX's advise is spot on as both brakes had seized up on the motors.
One thing that you might want to check out before putting a whole lot of time, money and effort into this Teac are the heads. Give 'em a good cleaning, then get a good light and magnifying glass and inspect them. If they show signs of pitting or other corrosion, you may want to consider just getting another Teac and using this one for spare parts. (The Audiogon bluebook for a working 4010S is $100). Keep your eyes peeled for the Teac A-6010 (1973) - AG bluebook is $250 - I have one and it rocks.
By the way, is the belt that turned to goo - the one that is just for the foot counter?
Regards - Mario

Check the resistance to the motor. This can be done at the motor wires. Compare to the good motor. Post the results.
Since the solenoid had a similar problem, it may be that the bearing is dry in the motor as well as pitted. In that case you'll need to remove, clean an oil the motor.
