View Full Version : What about vintage JVC tuners?

I picked up a JVC tuner recently and noticed that there's very little information online about JVC tuners. The TIC lists only three JVC tuners, and nothing between 1974 and 1986. There are also no JVC tuners in their "on-deck circle". So, did the JVC tuners from the '70s suck or were they so rare that nothing is known about them?

i RECENTLY BOUGHT A SET OF GOODIES FROM A USED SHOP, WHO SAID THE SET CAME FROM A PREVIOUS OWNER. GOT THE THING REAL CHEAP.

VT-500 tuner (got output volume control, hi-blend, am/fm, two rca sets at the back, one set for the variable volume, one foe fixed output. This one actually performs the best out of the bunch, compared to NAD4225, Marantz 2240/2225 and MR230/215. FM reception shows very low hackground hiss (next to zilch here), no sibilant noise. The facia and everything looks clean and works. It has a very cleaver adjustment mechanism of the string. It was loaded at the back with a sprung wheel, adjustable with a screw. I turned in the screw a bit and now it works precisely and smoothly.

As to the sound of this tuner, wow it's good, although I suspect the channel separation should be a little for better stereo imaging effect. But when I listen to the best local FM station of classical music, only the limited frequency response (perhaps only up to around 10kHz), and the compressed dynamics tell it's actually FM radio.

Other goodies in the set include:

VN-300 amplifier
CD-1520 cassette tape player
JVC/Nivico HE 3520 high efficiency speakers (perhaps arond 93-94 dB SPL/1watt) My SET has good time playing the VT-500 through this pair of speakers.

Interestingly, I practically found zilch info on the net about any of the components I had bought.

ANyone else with experience or comment on the VT-500?

They were decent in my recollection.
Good RF performance for massmarket, lower-priced stuff, as I recall.

I didn't list my JVC; it's a JT-V77. OakTree (http://www.oaktreeent.com/Stereo_Tuners.htm) recently sold one for $239, which seems quite pricey - but that's another topic. Anyway, the JT-V77 has some nice features, such a large and nicely weighted tuning knob, a big scale, separate muting and stereo switches, tuning and signal strength meters, and an adjustable output level. It appears to be comparable to a Pioneer TX-8500II. It's nice looking and seems to work well, but I haven't spent much time with it. I have no idea why it wasn't more popular. I guess JVC didn't have much appeal at the time.
