OvenMaster 08-17-2005, 04:06 AM Speaking only for myself, I'd pay that if it were in mint shape and I wanted a really good dedicated CD player. That thing got glowing reviews at $700 new from just about everyone. Others may say "no" but I personally would say "yes". Tom Kamakiri 08-17-2005, 06:46 AM Definitely a good deal :thmbsp: I LOVE mine! DingusBoy 08-17-2005, 07:01 AM I really liked mine - I mean the one I bought off Kam - errr, I mean the one Kam bought off me - and only because I spent big money to replace it with a tubed unit. $300 is defintely not a rip-off. Balthazarr 08-17-2005, 01:07 PM I think you guys think I mean new; it's used. DingusBoy 08-17-2005, 01:25 PM Nope, I knew you meant used. Assuming it's in very good shape, try it out and if you don't like it you could resell it without a loss. completed Ebay (http://search-completed.ebay.com/rega-planet_W0QQcatrefZC6QQcoactionZcompareQQcoentrypag eZsearchQQcopagenumZ1QQfisZ2QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfs opZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZQ2d1QQsargnZQ2d1QQsasl cZ2QQsbrftogZ1QQsofocusZsoQQsojsZ1) Balthazarr 08-17-2005, 01:48 PM I'm thinking... Balthazarr 08-17-2005, 02:02 PM This is what I'm currently considering. Tell me what you would do. OMS 5A II (still at auction) Denon DCD 1500 (still at auction) Denon DCD 1700-$100 + shipping Denon DCD 1520 (not fully functioning-reads discs sporadically) $35 +shipping Rega Planet $300 plus shipping I think the 1700 is the best deal, but I can't find any info with google on build. Made in '87 is all I know and it weighs about 20 lbs more or less. Coax digital out is preferred in addition to analog out. OvenMaster 08-17-2005, 03:07 PM I knew you meant used as well. I'd still go for the Rega. It's the only one I had on my "If I won the lottery" list. Tom Celt 08-17-2005, 04:04 PM The Rega's have a very "analog" presentation. Sounds like a good deal to me if it's in tip-top shape. Balthazarr 08-17-2005, 08:22 PM Any fb on the others I listed? In particular the 1700. OvenMaster 08-20-2005, 09:23 AM Nah :D Tom WhiteSE 08-20-2005, 09:35 AM I dont know how much they are used, but if you can find one of them Ah Tjoeb! tubed cdp's, they sound great to me as well,,,the Rega is also outstanding...go for it. crooner 08-20-2005, 11:07 AM I briefly owned an original Planet which I bought used in mint condition for around $350. I used it for a month or so and sold it on eBay for about the same that I paid for. So no loss there. Mine had the remote and original manual. I liked the Planet but my sample was prone to airborne vibration from the speakers. Perhaps the special rubber feet needed adjustment or even replacement. I tried some vibrapods and the problem persisted. Basically it liked to skip when the low notes hit :D I figure nothing was wrong with it. Just that my particular listening room posed a challenge for it. The eBay buyer is very happy with it. I loved the Planet's sound though. Fortunately my Denon DVD-2910 universal player has very good redbook performance (to my ears). Before getting rid of the Rega I did some informal AB comparisons between the two. I though the Denon sounded pretty damn close to it. Perhaps a tad better. So I guess progress has indeed been made in DACs since 1998. The Denon has a Burr Brown top shelf 192/24 DAC. F1nut 08-20-2005, 11:10 AM :butt1: Mike Stehr 08-20-2005, 01:22 PM I paid 300 bucks for a '99 Rega Planet a couple years back. It stills works, and doesn't skip. Reliable little player, even if it does look like a car amp. Those Planet's are getting a little long in the tooth, a guy would almost want to hear the unit before purchase. IMO... I took a chance a bought one online. The guy threw it in a oversized box with one layer of the smaller bubble wrap and peanuts, I'm lucky it even worked. I swap between the Rega and a Toshiba 3950 DVD unit. The 3950 is a little rolled off sounding in comparison. I could live with either player.... The Rega does rather good after it's been left on for 24/7. |
