I've had an ADSL connection for a couple of years now and i've always had issues with it. Connections dropping, slow access speeds, unable to connect.
Initially I had a Fujitsu FDX310 USB adapter but got rid because of the dropouts.
I then moved to an Ethernet modem from D-Link. A DSL-300G+ that was much better but was still a bit finnicky being dogged with the issues that I mentioned.
A couple of weeks ago I couldn't access the internet at all and was off for five days. So, I checked everything on my machine and all was set as it should be. Checked the ADSL connection settings on the modem and that was fine. In desperation I reset the modem and knackered it up in the process (I mistakenly thought the reset meant just that and not Self-Destruct!).
So I was without a modem :( A visit to the local computer store yielded a cheapie Zoom X3 ADSL adapter and Router. I was back on but still had the same stupid crap with disconnecting and what not. Whilst contemplating the next step I remebered that the Zoom came with a couple of new micro-filters. I went around the house and replaced the microfilters and Et Voila! it runs like a good-un'
Who would have thought that just a simple thing like the microfilters would cause such problems?
Anyway, i'm now connected at 2304MBs (2K!) and it rocks. I've been watching streaming video and downloading at lightning fast speeds for the past few days.
Last night I plugged the ADSL adapter into the uplink of my HUB and connected up my two machines (desktop and laptop) and can quite comfortably do streaming on both at the same time.
I'm really pleased with the performance now :)
Next project? ---- A Linux Firewall
