View Full Version : cirkus or tonearm upgrade on linn lp 12 kodiac 08-23-2005, 05:45 PM what should i do first?wich one have more significant sonic improvenment? vinylengine 08-23-2005, 07:16 PM It partly depends on which arm you are using and how old the deck is? The post 1987 decks aren't that far behind the Cirkus versions IMHO but if you are already using an Ekos or Aro then the tonearm doesn't really need changing either. If you have an Akito or better fitted to an early deck then go for a Cirkus, but seriously consider a DIY Geddon or S/H flutterbuster to sort out the primitive standard power supply first. kodiac 08-23-2005, 08:19 PM thks vinylengine i should have specify that my linn is an original, vahalla power and basik tonearm regards kodiac 08-23-2005, 08:50 PM hey Jass your site is great melofelo 08-24-2005, 09:47 AM i second that...an excellent site... :thmbsp: vinylengine 08-24-2005, 10:44 AM thanks guys :o As for the LP12, Firstly I'd check out the bearing you have for wear, and if its OK relube it and go for a new arm. You'll hear a massive improvement dropping something like a Zeta or an Alphason HR100S on there. To work out how far behind your deck is to a current model check out the Linn LP12 FAQ. A Cirkus kit is pretty expensive and it might be cheaper to sell your deck and buy a post 1993 deck with all the latest spec parts already fitted? http://www.n.mackie.btinternet.co.uk/linn/tlp12faq.html#history kodiac 08-24-2005, 11:35 AM JaS this is a very usefull links you make my day and thank you very much for your good inputs regards :) Mike Cole 08-11-2007, 09:35 AM Kodiac, I heard a demo of two LP-12s - one with Akito and K9 and Cirkus kit and one with Ekos and K9 but no Cirkus kit. The one with the Cirkus kit was slightly quieter and had more "there" (presence?) there. The tune playing abilites were not any better though - I thought the Ekos version still had slightly more PRaT. The Cirkus improvements were more of a round earth type upgrade. However, this was more than 15 years ago, so take this anecdote with a grain of salt. Having said this though, I think I agree with vinylengine that a tonearm may be the way to go. Mike |
