so i did a simple repair on my car['90 mazda mx6]...i needed to replace the light bulb behind my heater controls...simple enough,a couple screws got the trim panel off,a couple more got the control mechanism out far enough to reach the bulb and replace it...but i guess in pulling on it,i have now screwed up the alignment of the control cables/levers with the the parts they operate inside the dash...they now only operate over half thier normal range and the vents operated by the controls restricted range don't match the lever's positions, obviously the cables now need some sort of adjustment but i have no idea how one does this!

i don't relish the thought of under dash surgery to reach the other ends of the cables but if necessary i guess i'm sorta stuck with it...i'm sure this is likely a simple if inconvenient adjustment, nothings been broken. but before i tear into this tomorrow, can anyone give me any pointers on how these work and how one generally goes about doing it?

There are clips fastened to either the body or the dash that the cables clip on to. You probably yanked them out trying to get to the light bulb.

If that is not the case, you may want to try to get your hands on a hanyes or chilton manual for your mx6. That will give you diagrams for under dash wire and cable routing for your temp cluster. You should be able to find one at your auto parts store. Sometimes the main branch of a library will have recent automotive manuals.

bingo!give that man a cigar...had to dissassemble my glove box and the passenger side of the dash[sounds worse than it was]to get to one and remove a panel under the drivers side for the other...once access was gained,it took all of about 30 seconds to reclip the other end of the cables in,normal function has now been restored...thanks for the tip :)
