this one cleaned up fairly nicely, and I like how she sounds after about 1/2 an hour too. :thmbsp:

Lookin good bolly, especially on top of that KA-9150. How does it sound in comparison to the CT-1010 as far as tube vs. SS? And where did you get it? Also did you see the CT-1010 for BIN $75?

was gonna pick her up and run both CT-1010's, :nutz:

one for each channel. :stupid:

So far she sounds darn good, the Yammi is superior but the dyna sounds sweet... and smells great too! I picked her up at the Barrie Hamfest, she was the only piece of home audio gear that I saw. :D

I guess I'm going to have to pick up a tube tuner one day ....... but there are so many SS analog and digital tuners I want....... the choices, the choices? :scratch2: And another thing I've kinda been wanting to get into is short wave. Some really nice SW tuners out there. Might be fun picking up the BBC and Castro speeches! :D

So it begins with a tube tuner huh Greg?

Come on down for a listen, you can start with a taste, a tube pre, tube amps, speakers that work with tube amps, a tube phono stage which of coarse goes with the vinyl...

I can see it now, another tube & vinyl junkie just waiting to get hooked.

Come on, Bill, there's no sport to this, it's WAY too easy, and you know it. One listen, and there will be a flood of Bryston/AR9/Spec/IMF gear, in Ontario.

Oh, sorry, you may be trying to get that. :D

Bob,

I don't know if you live in strong reception area or not. If not, then a tube Tuna might not be the best choice, as they are not the most sensitive, or selective of tunas.

However, if you do live a in decent reception area, the sound out of some tube tunas can be simply unbelievable. Two that I know for a fact sound fantastic are the Mac MR-67, and the MR-65, with the edge going to the 67. The MR-71 is a better performer in terms of selectivity, but it IMHO is not sonically in the same league as the other two Macs.

I have heard that the Dyna is supposed to sound good, but I have never heard one that was properly alligned, so I never heard anything but Mono out of and FM-3. But the tuning Eye tubes are completely unavailable for the Dyna units, so if it goes out, you cannot get a replacement (even NOS are virtually all gone from what I understand).

One tuna that I can tel you stinks is the old EICO unit (don't remember the model). My dad used to have one of those, and there was nothing to envy about the sound of that piece at all.

Some of the old Sherwoods are supposed to sound pretty good, and they are still cheap and relatively unknown. But you won't find one of these that sounds good out of the box like you may with a Mac.

The top line tube tuners will pull just as strong as the solid state units. Marantz 10B (of course), the Fishers, the Macs and the Scotts will run with and often ahead of any SS designs.
Don't believe everything you read at that tuner site.

Having seen the gallery, I think you have a Nice system, dude!!!!! :thmbsp:
I haven't heard it yet, but would love to listen to a 'tube-vinyl' system. I have a SS amp and cd player and inefficient speakers!! It's like the opposite of a serene tube system. One day I'll start a valved system, and perhaps for the time being add a tube pre to my current setup.

Kinda pricey.... I wonder if you could duplicate what the seller is doing for a lot less?

The first one looks like you get both mods for $70 total.

You may want to research some back issues of Audio Amateur. David Berning reverse engineered the PECs and found that the stock de-emphasis was incorrect. The PECs are easy enough to build and really bring out the high frequencies. There are other mods such as derating some key resistors that are run outside of their power rating and increasing the size of the coupling caps on the 12AX7s. You can even sub out different tubes for the 6U8s and increase sensitivity. It's a lot of work but very rewarding. Have fun, Lee.

I don't know about trying to duplicate for less but these look real interesting Bob. For 70 bucks I think I'll grab these and get my old FM-3 off the shelf and get to soldering - the multi-section cap was one of the reasons I never went any further with it.

Nice tuna Bolly.
Speaking of tube tuners, I used to have a McIntosh MR67 that sounded gorgeous. The tuner section in my SX-1980 comes pretty damn close to it. I would say that sonically they are identical. That should tell ya something!

As for the "dark side" conversion to tubes. To me it was the opposite. I used to be a total tube junkie. A big stash of Gold Lion KT88s, Telefunken ECC83 Diamond Bottoms, etc. I am attaching old pics of some of my prized tubes.

I gravitated from McIntosh tube electronics to my present setup. I still have tubes in my phono preamp though. :D
