Magnavox am-fm ft-1460 tuner is listed as a prototype. No affiliation and all that. Google the make and model get quite a few hits. Scam maybe?

I would want to know more. . . John you seem to find the one of a kind pieces. . . .
I wouldnt put too much in that tuner. . . Just by looking at the rear and the display it doesnt seem like much. Rare really means nothing unless it has performance to match. I might be wrong but it looks to me like someone trying to make more out of what he actually has. . .

With the matching amp. Doesn't look to be a high dollar piece when new. Probably nothing special but you never know. :scratch2:

i am sure he will be happy to get $9.95 for it. :lmao: otherwise, there would be a reserve, & *really detailed* pics of the front & rear.

Could be the next sleeper model, you'd crap your pants if you found out it had 7-9 gangs in it :)

i certainly would - cuz, if the seller really had a sleeper here, we'd see the pics of the tuning cap! ;)

Maybe he doesn't know how to remove the cover or even what a varactor looked like?

c'mon dan - this guy is praying that he can get $10 plus shipping! 1500+ feedbacks, his ebay name is "audioandotherthings"... if he had something worthwhile here, you can be sure it would be easy to see in well-detailed pics... including the cover pulled off, w/inside pics. as it is, what details there asre, are wery obscured. i am sure the seller knows how to take good pics of this - if he wanted to. ;)

You are probably right Doug. I guess maybe I was thinking this one might have some hidden potential? BTW, that JVC sure is sounding good :) Tough call between it and the Philips AH6731.

you have done *lotsa* work on that jvc - not surprised it is a tough call between it & the philips, considering how good i thought the jvc sounded when *i* had it, & it was bone-stock. are ya gonna do up the philips in a similar fashion? i know ya have done *some* work to it... certainly, the philips *looks* a bit nicer, eh? :D

Did Doug talk you into the Philips Dan? He had me going but I ended up with 3 new ones when the bonus check arrived before the wife saw it: Yamaha's CT-7000, T-2 and Nikko Gamma V. I've been tempted on all of them before and this past week all of them were very reasonably priced. By the way Doug, how did the HK Citation turn out?

I've rebuilt the PS section on the Philips, done some recapping, still want to do a few more things to it. The Philips does edge it in looks, plus it has a little better selectivity, the ANSC is hard to beat, and the multipath is a great feature. Like it says in TIC, the Philips is a feature packed tuner. Be nice if the Philips had dual antenna inputs. I guess you can't have everything, must be why we buy so many :)
Doug didn't talk me into a Philips I had it for awhile now, although his description of it is spot on.

The Philips is stock form is hard to beat by most other tuners in stock form. Wish I could find a couple more for what I paid for mine.
I am sitting right next to a Magnavox 1460. Picked it up at the dump -- had no idea it was a top of the line super tuner. Actually, though not all the lights and functions work, it isn't a bad little piece. It has much less in the way of birdies and extraneous noise than most of the tuners I've used in this tough reception area. So maybe it is super...

brian, the philips ah673/6731 *is* hard to beat, even stock. but, there *are* quite a few tunas out there that are its peer, imo. at some point, it comes down to which features ya like, which look ya like, & which ergonomics appeal to ya. so many tunas, so little time! :D
hank, my radio-x modded hk citation 18 tuna turned out great. i cannot distinguish it at all from my stephen sank modded hk 18! :D which is interesting, cuz they have different mods. no filter-adder boards on the sank tuna, for example. the radio-x tuna may need s'more break-in - it has a few black gates caps in it. but, i have listened enuff to think it's not gonna change much. i'll prolly end up selling it - i don't need two identical tunas - but it is fun to compare. i will likely give the guy who sold it to me 1st right of refusal, cuz he practically gave the thing to me - one channel was out due to a lightning strike, & it turns out the fix was simple. so, i basically yust paid for mods. :naughty:
i will be curious to hear a comparison between the ct-7000 & the t-2 yamaha's, hank - i owned a t-2 & thought it to be a really nice piece. on par w/my yust-sold tandberg 3001a. a coupla comments have been that it's actually nicer sounding than the more exalted ct-7000, which i have never tried. and, the gamma v is also supposed to be nice. i had a gamma I, & thought it outperformed my tandberg. an absolute steal for <$100! ;)
nat, pull the lid of that magnavox, & post some pics!

Added a couple larger de-coupling caps to the JVC on the LA3450 MPX circuit. Odd thing is it seemed to make it more sensitive. I don't quite understand why unless the added filtering cleaned the signal up some. I've been trying to upgrade a Rotel RT-870 tuna lately also, after hearing the JVC I realized the highs and soundstage of the Rotel was lacking, but it is more sensitive than the JVC. The Philips is still the one to beat though. I just can't get over that soundstage on the JVC though. I do want to see the nudies of that Maggie tuner. See how fast Doug buys one :)

DanTana,
Which model JVC did you upgrade?

Trying to attach a photo of the Magnavox 1460, but no luck yet. Front controls are the normal ones for a low end digital tuner, but does have switcheable IF bands. It has two input/outputs that I don't know the purpose of -- an AFS bus and a remote cont bus. It also has two switched outlets, which strikes me as a little odd. Perhaps it was the main control for a system.
I don't think its anything special, but I do value its lack of birdies.

Doug, you'll get no argument from me. I also will be the first to come forward and suggest as for built, there are many I prefer. Yes, much of what we love and prefer is subjective.

I realize this is an old post, but I picked up a Magnavox FT-1460 at a local thrift store for $3. This was about the only post I could find on this weird tuner. It says "Made in Japan", which is odd, I know Magnavox made the first videogame in Japan around '72, but I thought most of their products were U.S. made. This tuner really isn't as bad as the hideous exterior would suggest. The sound is decent and it picks up stations fairly well. This one is missing the remote, and it had a feature for record-timing events but maybe only if paired with it's equally homely "matching" amplifier. It has Wide and Narrow bandwidth. Maybe it was a prototype, you don't hear about Magnavox tuners (maybe it was a Sears catalog type of deal). It will go on the ever-growing stack of "potential garage tuners".
Any additional info on this freak of nature? I would say $3 is an okay price for this tuner. Garage systems are very important.

Based on the styling of that I would put that well towards the end of the 70's or early 80's at the earliest. The digital tuner display would be a give away.

It would be post Magnavox as a USA company, i.e. after Philips purchased Magnavox. You can still find the marque on product. Philips did keep some manufacturing for a time in the US but on audio product it rebadged the better Magnavox designs as Philips Laboratory Series.

Hey Mark,
I'm glad you responded to this post. I bought my Pioneer SA-9100 mostly based (mostly) on your recommendations, and have loved it from day one. Anyways, I have the day off and cycled this chintzy tuner through my tuner stack, and I really like the sound. I think I even prefer it to the Kenwood KT-7300 that I usually use; also a mediocre Onkyo and Yamaha in the "garage" stack. It's not the greatest obviously, but it's pretty good. I've got an aligned KT-8005 and a Yamaha TX-900U coming in the mail, so I can do more comparisons later. I wouldn't call this an audiophile tuner, but it certainly was a pleasant surprise. I expected to toss it in the dumpster and not feel any pain. It has nice bass, and very un-obnoxious sound qualities. It just goes to show, sometimes, under the moldy egg-salad sandwich, lies something decent-sounding. I originally bought this to be a tuner/anvil/vise-mount.

Thanks for the response Brian. I googled 'Magnavox Company History' and didn't find much. I saw that Philips (is it a Japanese company?) bought Magnavox, then became Philips/Magnavox, and it confused consumers, so they became Philips, and then later re-introduced the Magnavox brand for their not-so-great (cheaper) designs, but I think this happened more recently. It sounds like another "Proud to be Shady" company (kinda like where I work). I wish I could see the original Ebay post, to see what the guy was talking about. They need an Ebay archive.
