My CD 63 SE does not respond to my remote and I was wondering if the remotes are typically prone to this?
I believe I read somewhere that they are, but don't remember.

Changed the batteries so that isn't the problem.

Could also be the IR sensor in the player itself.

Most marantz players use the very common Phillips IR commands, so just about any universal replacement remote will have the codes on board...

The other cool trick is to point your remote control into the lens of a camcorder or digital camera with an LCD preview screen. Press some buttons on the remote control, and watch the LCD screen. If the remote is working you'll see the IR emitter LEDs in the remote flash as the buttons are pushed.
