The Fender Squire (Stratocaster - Telecaster) models are pretty nice for the money, and they play well for a $200 - $300 guitar. If you buy them from a reputable dealer, they'll set it up properly, and you'll be alot more satisfied with it.

Get yourself a used G&L Invader. American made by the people that built the real Fender guitars, without the crazy inflated prices. I think the Invader body style best fits your Mustaine thing.

Theodoric is right, G&L's are great guitars, and having humbuckers will make playing your favorite style of music a lot easier. I've seen a few in pawns over the years, and if your budget will allow, a good condition G&L will carry you about as far as you wanna go.
For metal, also look at some used Gibsons, you'll have trouble finding their top of the line stuff at a bargain, but some of the mid-eighties pieces are really nice, and can be found for sub $500 prices. The Spirit II series are some very good guitars, I've played one for years, and they compare quite nicely to Gibson's TOTL gear. Course if you run across an decent Gibson SG for a price you can afford, I can't recommend them highly enough for hard rock - I mean, how wrong can Angus Young or Tommy Iommi be?

Well, here's what I wish I would have done...
Back in the dark ages, when I picked up the guitar, I bought an old Fender Duo Sonic from a pawn shop with earnings I saved from a summer job. Similar to the Mustang. Pre CBS back then of course. I played and played.and played it Lots of fun but I found out something. I so wish I started on a standard acoustic guitar and I wished that I put that strap on, stood up and practiced more standing than sitting. It's easier to go from playing an acoustic guitar to playing an electric guitar but not the other way around IMO. I say, spend a year or so getting your fingers strong and limber on an acoustic guitar. Then if you want to be some kind of rock star, get an electric and start bending strings. Also, you will always run across an acoustic guitar sitting in the corner of somebodies room, party whatever. It's great to be able to waltz on over, pick it up, tweak a string here or there and start slamming out some tunes. The chicks dig it... (well ummm if you are into "chicks" that is) Do yourself a BIG BIG favor and start from the beginning right with NO bad habits. That way you are not trying to break those bad playing habits later.
Anyway, just some food for thought.

For a beginner, there are a lot of Mexicans or Chinese look-a-like fender guitars.
They sound pretty good.

Not knowing your budget, for metal I would have to recommend an older USA Jackson Soloist, if your wallet can handle it. Lots of nice 80's Kramers, such as the Pacer, can be yours at lower prices. A Gibson Explorer is a great metal guitar, also. There are lots if options. ESP makes some nice metal guitars. The one below looks sweet.
Good luck!

I pickup up a nice SX from Rondo Music for my first. Plays nice and didn't cost an arm or a leg. You might look at an Agile also, a little more expensive but IMHO sounds better than an Epiphone les paul.
