View Full Version : Time for AudioKarma Secret Santa 2005!
Kamakiri

My how time flies, and it's time once again for AudioKarma Secret Santa! :D
If you have any questions as to how it works, check over the posts in this forum and see how we've done it in previous years. This is a LOT of fun!
This will be the official Secret Santa sign up sheet thread, so please only post to this if you want to join. Feel free to start another thread for questions :)
The gift limit this year will be as in the past, $30 (shipping costs do not factor into this figure, and please be aware that your secret santa may be in another country). We will leave this thread open to all who want to join in the spirit of AudioKarma holiday gift giving. This sign up will open now, and be open through Tuesday November 15th. Your gift should make it to your intended no later than December 18th, giving more than ample shopping and shipping time.
Only people posting in this thread will be counted as those participating. Once this thread is closed, I will be PMing everyone with info on who you're buying for :)

Well... my SS came through already! Last night, there was a small package awaiting me. The wrapped giftie inside said "best opened NOW" (or words to that effect). Inside were FOUR new CD's of Christmas holiday music! Audiophile-grade, at that! Outstanding present for a holiday music junkie such as I. Thanks, Santa!
(my "Secret" Santa tipped his hand as to his ID, but I shan't disclose it here -- as this would reduce the pool of would-be Secret Santa "givers")

luvvinvinyl sent me the perfect gift records. :thmbsp:
The selections were inspired. Direct to disc blues by Arthur Wiilliams with Jesse Hoggard and a Mel Torme and Buddy Rich.
I saw Buddy Rich live and was enthralled with his big band. Now l would never select these two lp's due to either not aware of Arthur Williams and secondly wouldn't have thought of the Torme/Rich combination. Have played each record twice and enjoyed both immensely. :)

12-27-2005, 10:15 AM
bigmacc, I'm glad you like the LPs. Both are D2D. The Arthur Williams/Jesse Hoggard is recent, and I like it a lot. The Mel Torme/Buddy Rich is from 1978(I think?), and I bought my first copy new. That recording is the only one that those two lions made together. Interesting bit of trivia. Mel Torme was playing in Vegas, nightly. Hopped on a redeye to NYC, for the morning recording session. After a quick run-through of the tunes, one take for side one, break for lunch, one take for side two, "Thanks, boys!" Back in the air, and played Vegas that evening, never missed a show. Class!
Enjoy.

...to he who waits!
I was on my way out the door, headed to work, when the mailman pulled up behind my car. A large box, from our Fearless Leader, addressed to me. It's here! Secret Santa made it after all! (Tim, I didn't know that you were Orthodox.) Now I have to go to work, and leave the box unopened. *sigh* I hate waiting.
Fast forward 3 hours, and step in the door. "Hi, hon!", as I make my way upstairs, to see what's in the box. After digging through all the packing, I find a curious device, the likes of which I have only ever seen in pictures. The manual (YES, it came with the manual! Damn good thing, too.) says it is a "Zenith M660 Multi-band Receiver" for AM and short-wave. A cursory read says it has 5 tubes, but doesn't say what kinds, and two silicon diodes. A heavy little beast, for its size, my WAG says 1960's, can't be any later than early 70's, can it?
I have a new winter project! It needs a little TLC, and I need a whole lot of education about what to do with this. I guess I'll be hanging out in both the Radio forum and the Tube forum. I've gotta learn how to start this little baby up, and get her singing, without killing it, or myself. This should be fun!
Tim, thanks so much for this great gift! This will take me down a different path than I have ever seen, in this hobby. Thanks!

Thanks for posting that! That is SO cool! I never saw a Zenith like that... cosmetics looks like late-60's/early-70's, eh?

Thanks Secret santa. I recently got a large collection of LP's with the stipulation that I take good care of them. The DiscWasher will come in handy. This thoughtful Santa also included the latest copy of the Bathroom reader so that my time in the Throne room won't be wasted.

not sure who to thank but they are a couple of great Blues CDs. They came on two different days which was great, I didn't have to decide which to play first :music: they sounded great on my "new" yammie..

Geez, I forgot all about this SS deal. If you're wondering about what you sent, it didn't make it. Not to worry, it'll surely show up any day.
Ken, happy birthday!!!
Pro Ac, I have finally replaced the beer I got busted for trying to send you with something else that the border patrol will let thru. I'll get it on it's way to you Monday. I sincerely apologize for the delay ;)
