Ramen noodles are quite good actually. You can do just about anything with them! Spice them up...mix them up...add stuff. If you screw things up who cares! They're dirt cheap! What? 15-20 cents a pack?

Ramen noodles are the butt of jokes....but I think they're great!
Of course, I would'nt want to live off the damn things but....

Lets hear it for Ramen noodles!

When I got out of school and could afford more than 19 cents for a meal, I swore I'd never eat Ramen noodles again!

My first job paid $16,000 a year. I would go to the store for food and not buy anything that cost more than $1. I ate a lot of Ramen and Kraft Mac and Cheese.

Actually, I love 'em, except for the fact that the whole package has like 3000mg of sodium! :yikes: Anyone got any ideas to cut that way down? What I've done is use only like a quarter of any seasoning packet, but it's still way too salty for me.

Ya' gotta drain the water (some don't) and then drown with butter and add the flavor packet to taste ( never more than about 1/4) Butter, salt, pepper and parmesian cheese is good too. I'm gettin hungry.

Especially the Nagori Udon ones, hot and spicy seafood :thmbsp:

I get them from www.ikoreafoods.com for 9.99 a box :)

I use them with stir fried veggies, maybe some tuna. I can usually do without the seasoning pack so no worries about the sodium or MSG. Kids like em for a snack with nothin but a bit of seasoning. Good for a midnight snack after a dozen beer.
Girlfriend can't stand them.

I like to mix 'em up with some ground beef & saute'd onions.....then a touch of soy sauce.

Ovenmaster! I had no idea they contained THAT much sodium! Goes to show I never read the nutrition labels...

Reading nutritional labels actually causes hardening of the arteries - It's a fact! Honest!

It ain't the sodium but the 40% of daily fat allowance in each pack that'll get ya! Ramen noodles are deep fried so I always drain off the hot water and then add more.

I think there are serveral versions of the Ramen noodles. Some are ready to eat meals and microwaveable.

Never tried those. But the basic cheap packs of noodles with flavor pack are really economical. Often 6 or 8 packs for a dollar. Once I bought 10 for a buck.

Always have some on hand on the shelf. A lunch for two for 10 cents in todays world!

Usually when I fix them, I throw in a handfull of raw macaroni into the water as it boils. By the time you add the Ramen noodles, the macaroni is done. This bolsters the servings. You can also add leftovers from the 'fridge. Sometimes there are leftovers for later.

Such a deal!

I usually make a stir fry out of 'em.

Two Packets Ramen (any flavor, you're going to throw away the flavor packets)
1 cup stir fry vegetables (broccoli, carrots, onions, mushrooms)
1 clove garlic
1/2 cup cooking Sherry
One teaspoon sesame seed oil
One tablespoon olive oil (peanut oil works well but I'm allergic so...)
Small red chilis (optional)

Drop whole noodle packets in boiling water. Cook until soft enoughto manipulate but not squishy, a little harder than al dente.

While that is boiling, in a seperate pan heat oils. Once oil is heated add the vegetables, chilis if you want to, and crushed garlic (chopped works as well but I prefer it with a crusher). Stir this around for about two minutes then add the Sherry.

Once noodles are at the desired state fill a measuring cup with water and keep to the side. Put noodles in pan with vegetables. Stir well and make sure all flavors are around the noodles. Pour water from measuring cup as needed. Once noodles are at desired state, a little crisp but still soft, serve.

Russ, you'll appreciate this:
Go to Trader Joe's, buy some of their frozen, cooked shrimp, a package of mixed frozen vegetables (the large pieces with broccoli, carrots, etc), and a package of their frozen assorted asian mushrooms.
Throw about 2 - 3 cups of water in a pot, and throw in the veggies, some mushrooms and a package of ramen, and the ramen seasoning.. Bring to a boil and cook until the veggies are done.
While that's cooking, put some shrimp in a bowl and run cold water over them until they thaw.
When the stuff in the pot is done, throw in the shrimp.
Eat! You might want to add some soy sauce. If you used more water, it's soup. If you used less water, it's oriental vegetables with shrimp and noodles.

well, sounds good Warren except I can't deal with shrimp....or anything that swims for that matter! :) I think I'd substitute strips of thin sliced roast beef for the shrimp.

Here's a breif shrimp story:

Last spring a reefer-truck backed into our plant to pick up a load. Long story short...The guy had about 20 cases of frozen shrimp (couple cases of salmon too)..to get rid of, because he had to turn off his freezer trailer to have our products loaded. Well, I hate shrimp! So I announced on the plant P.A. that any one wants some FREE shrimp come to the shipping office.

I was almost stampeded!! The plant manager was less than thrilled since my announcement basically shut down the plant for a good 15-20 mins. :D

I was popular as hell that day!

Russ

Oh, I think I should ad, the reefer driver DID get approval from his dispatcher to toss/give away the seafood. Who ate the cost of the waste is anyones guess!

Russ

Well, yeah any suitable substitute will work; veggie burgers, chicken, steak.
I have used shrimp and veggie burgers, but I'm a vegetarian, so I haven't tried it with meat.

I appreciate yur concern Strawman, nothing to worry about :) .
For lunch today I had 2 bananas, 1 apple & a ham & cheese sandwhich.

Although I DO love Ramen noodles & Spam, I actually consume them not all that often!
As for bacon...Oh man I LOVE bacon! I've got 2 packs of it in my freezer that I bought about a month ago and still not sure when I'll thaw it out. Have'nt had any bacon in a while.......

Reason: Bacon is such a messy PITA to cook!
When I DO cook it I let the bacon drain dry on a pile of paper towels :)

Tonite for dinner....left-over rigatoni & a bowl of peaches for desert!

Some tricks for you:

Ramen that separately cook the noodles from the soup (cooks noodles
then dump soup base into the pot): heat separate boiling water for the
soup seaprate from the noodles. Then when noodles finish cooking,
dump the water and rinse with cold water. This firms the noodles up,
and the cooking water is separated from the soup. Clearer soup.

Second: buy a small bottle of sesame oil. Add a couple drops to any
ramen. Smells better. Although Spam and hotdogs will overwhelm the
sesame flavor.

Mmm... Ramen noodle soup :thmbsp:

My fav is cook up noodles with flavor packet and garlic powder, add fresh broccoli, grilled chicken chunks and mushrooms.

When done add a little onion :thmbsp:

With the added fresh veggies the salt isn't overwhelming.

Here's another Ramen idea.

Boil your water. Add 2 packs of Ramen. Add just ONE of the season packets. After its done drain all the water, leave noodles in the pot and add a bit of butter (about 2 tblspoons). Let butter melt & mix in with noodles.

Then sprinkle in some Italian seasoning and then some parsely.
Then add some spagetti sauce (Prego/Ragu..whatever)

Sprinkle in some parmesan cheese.

....Or, leave out the spagetti sauce & eat with only the parmesan cheese.

A "quick-n-dirty" spagetti dinner !

....I realize I can't spell "spagetti" correctly!...or AM I? :D

A great idea, Russ! And it's "spaghetti." I also had been thinking of going the reverse direction; using elbow pasta or something similar with oriental seasoning. Especially because my oldest daughter has a hissy fit when I use "her" Ramen. Um... who paid for it?!

RussinOhio
11-23-2005, 08:35 PM
Here's another!

Cook a couple bags of the noodles with or without the seasoning pack, drain ALL the water. Add a little butter to taste. Add about a cup of milk. Add a pack (or 2), of the powder cheese mix found in a box of Macaroni & cheese.

(Save the "Mac" noodles for another project!)

Mix thouroghly. Add a bit of salt-n-pepper if you like.
Some green beans on the side and your in buisness!
Eat up.

(The powdered cheese from the "Mac" box seems to work best with Ramen noodles as it won't solidify as the noodles cool off. Velveeta or other stuff may taste good but it kinda gets the Ramen noodles all "Gummed-up" into a big sloppy cheese ball!)

You ain't had ramen until you've had it fresh! It's like night and day. On a chilly night a hot steamin bowl of fresh made noodles and some hearty broth, BBQ pork and all the fixins is hard to beat.

If they are too salty tasting, throw in a hand full of instant rice as you start cooking. My wife thinks I'm crazy, but I try to have this combo at least once a week. How about the real deal? Shoyu Ramen, Miso Ramen or Shio Ramen at a bustilin' Ramen joint? Way better and quite different than any freeze-dried sodium bomb.

There is only ONE way to eat Ramen. You must eat it with the following:

- Gyoza (dumplings)
- cold draft beer
- cold glass of fresh water

Trust me on this, I outta know since I am from the rising sun (at least 1/2 of me is).

Why do you think asian people in general look young for their age. Its all the salt. Hope it works for me.

I love the real thing but living in the country in atlanta its a little hard to come by.

My fav american style ramen recipe.
add noodles and flavor packet before water starts boiling
when the water gets going do the following
slice up a hot dog and thow that into the pot
add two eggs to cook
once everything is done put into a nice large bowl
place one slice of american cheese to the top of the noodles
and a healthy dose of hot sauce of your choice.

By the time your done adding the hot sauce the cheese should be melted. Mix well and enjoy.

Also one of my fav japanese dishes is yakisoba but its impossible to find (execpt for UFO bowls (instant yakisoba))
Boil the noodles from an oriental flavored pack.
in a seperate pan cook just a little bit of beef and cabbage in some sesame seed oil.
add noodles and 1/4 packet of flavor and you have the closest thing I can get to yakisoba without getting the real thing.

And I prefer to call my gyoza mandu
