View Full Version : There is a band
Henry Kloss 11-12-2005, 09:59 PM There is a band, that if you are, or were a big fan, you were known as a FREAK. My question is, which album would you consider to be they're sellout album. Of course, by sellout, I mean you would have no interest in they're subsequent albums. I have my own thoughts, but was very surprised in about 1980, to find a FREAK who was turned off by one of, what I consider they're BEST. I would appreciate your thoughts, as well as your guess as to what this album is. To those who have no idea what I am talking about, I apologies. But to those who do, I am interested to hear your comments.

Balthazarr 11-12-2005, 11:41 PM Let's see, which band? Residents? The G Dead? Zappa and the Mothers?
Gong? Split Enz? BeBop Deluxe? King Crimson?
Are we supposed to just guess?
CarlV 11-13-2005, 12:46 AM Yeah, what he said.

dingus 11-13-2005, 01:06 AM i vote for the Split Enz.....
i think you have to be a FREAK to know.
Balthazarr 11-13-2005, 02:54 AM Captain Beefheart? Bonzo Dog Band? XTC?
Henry Kloss 11-13-2005, 09:24 AM Sorry guys, it's possible that I didn't give you enough information. It's also possible that It was a local (Canadian) term. I will try once more. You say the name of the band and then freak, as in _______ Freak. If no one gets it I will just name them because I really do want to discuss the questions that I posed in my original post.
Some of those bands do definately qualify. Just not in this case.
Dynacophil 11-13-2005, 09:52 AM Hi
in a way this hits Ultravox for me. I love their first 4 Records... then they came up with shite like "dancing with tears in my eyes" - a million seller, from ten on they were Mainstream in the worst meaning for me.
same with strangles, clash and lots of others...
a canadian Band? I probably wil not know :)

Filmboydoug 11-13-2005, 09:54 AM maybe Kiss. Not sure which album tho...
foetusized 11-13-2005, 11:23 AM Canadian? Pre-1980? I'm guessing Rush. I knew lots of Rush Freaks in high school (and Duranies too) but never cared for either band myself.
Henry Kloss 11-13-2005, 12:58 PM No not a Canadian band. A local or Canadian term. The Answer is Genesis. Anyone who was really into Genesis round these parts was refered to as a Genesis freak. Up until A trick of the tail, they're albums had very modest sales. But when they came to Toronto, it was very hard to get a ticket to a 13,000 seat venue. And they could easily have sold out a second show. It seemed that every single person who bought the album was trying to get tickets. My personal cut off point for they're albums was anything after Wind and Wuthering. I think that album still had some great stuff. Alot of freaks won't listen to anything after Lamb Lies Down. I can understand that as Peter was gone. But I worked with a guy who was an original Genesis freak And he felt Lamb was the sellout album. So, I am looking forward to your views on this

Balthazarr 11-13-2005, 05:31 PM GENESIS!!?
I think it "freaky" that they were regarded that way unless this has a different meaning in the Great White North.
One of my all time favourite bands.
MY cutoff point, and I tried to hold out, was "Duke" or "And Then there were Three" whichever came last.
Balthazarr 11-13-2005, 05:32 PM Lamb a sellout as in commercialization?
That was PG's Magnum Opus.

It wasn't a derogatory term, just a way to describe the loyalty they had to the band. eg. Dead head. ( for the greatful dead). Lamb broke up the band. Peter insisted that he write all the lyrics. He almost had a nervous breakdown, and also pissed off the rest of the guys with his ever increasing need to control the album. The same thing happened with Pink Floyd, when they made the wall. Gilmore wrote most of the music, But Waters almost went crazy agonizing over the lyrics to get them perfect to the point that it was the end of they're friendship.
dingus 11-13-2005, 06:01 PM never heard the term "Freak" applied to Genesis fans..... i have heard a few people say, that followed them from the start, that "Trick of the Tail" was the equivilant of treason. i think a new generation of Genesis fans (me included) came on board with TOTT and i always looked at that album as a turning point. i didnt equated the term "sell out" with the band until Abacab.
Balthazarr 11-13-2005, 08:12 PM Never ever heard ABACAB other than the title song. Maybe Land of Confusion was on the same LP/CD?
Only exposure was with the video.
Not something i want to explore anyway.
