Well in case anyone noticed I have just returned. My computer died Friday night, my bad HD finally died and unfortunately it was the one that had my OS on it :( To add insult to injury the only discs I have to reload an OS onto my good HD are CDR's and they aren't bootable, and my CD-RW bit the dust a month a go and my other CDROM won't read CDR's (don't ask why) so I was screwed until I could go buy another CDROM. Well today after a visit to Best Buy and a buddy for a copy of a bootable OS disc I now have a new CDROM and have installed Windows XP proffessional and everything is ok now ;)

oh..... you were gone? :D

glad your back, good luck with your computer, I too was having real bad trouble with mine, and I proablly lost all of my info, I can't believe it, I had wayyy too much stuff I can never repalce.

hope everything is going well for you. BTW I am now runnin' XP (home) and really liking it, I was real partial to 98se, and didn't like XP, but I gotta say, Microsoft did something right with this.

Thor

Bummer about your computer woes.

Coudn't you install using a Floppy Disc, and say start with "CD compatibility"?

Still it's a good thing you got another CDROM, as the one you were using seemed to be on it's way out - once they have trouble reading CDR's they are pretty much dying.

I hope you didn't loose too many documents and information. The software is easy to find, but your own stuff is irreplaceable.

Gawd that sucks... Always hated when that happened. When you get tired of that sort of thing go to a raid array based sustem you will never have that problem again. Hard disks will fail. Raid array will never. Just boot from the next disk and away you go without missing a step... food for thought. Glad you're back to do that moderating that you do oooohhhhhh soooo weeeeell. :D

Well my CDROM that doesn't like to read CDR's is a fancy shmancy Kenwood one that was all the rage 4 years ago for being so fast, but to be so fast it uses multiple laser beams to read CD's and these don't like CDR's.

As far as my HD dying, it was a 7200rpm one and it lasted about 4 years and as much as I am on a computer, especially back in my Counter-Strike days, I can't complain I am sure I used it far longer than they are expected to run.

On the plus side I don't think I lost my data on it and I think when I put it back in as a slave drive I can get anything I wanted to save off it.

I too resisted change from ME to XP but I gotta admit it is pretty slick.

My new Gateway has XP. Got a Gateway because there's a GW store near me, and we have some GW's at work, and they have proven to be pretty good units.

XP has lots of changes from the Windows 98. It has taken a while to learn the new ways to do stuff, and find stuff.

98 worked pretty well, but....... I guess Microsoft needed to sell some new product.

Not sure why all the changes in XP, but none the less, have to move along with progress?? :(

I have been using XP Pro since it was released. You guys have to admit that it is a much more stable OS than any other that MS had before.

If you don't like the new look and feel of the start menu and the folder options, there are ways to make them have the "classic windows" view instead. Turning on the classic view makes XP look and feel pretty much like WIN 98 - it just crashes much less.

I've been using PC's since the dos days, when you had to write all the commands. No icons to click with the mouse.
Fortran programming....

And since, .....have used all the various Microsoft, and Apple OS's as they have come out.

XP is just another one, there will be many more.
