Eartlier this year I took apart my system, and sent it off to new homes. Funny thing about it was that it sounded great in my other house, but never gelled in this room. Anyways the system consisted of Cabasse Catalane 500 speakers,Art Audio Diavolo amp,Audible Illusions 3A pre amp, Sony Scd777ES cd player, and TG audio cabling.

My interim system was a set of Acoustat 1+1 with Medallion interface,Acoustat TNP pre amp and TNT 200 power amp. Sony 555 player with Tube Lab Research Mods. This system had some suprising attributes, but never really did float my boat. So I once again sent it off to new owners.

Off to Audiogon and the web I went with a pocket full of dollars and a vision. Time to get back to Single Ended Triode tubes. Going to try to build a budget system that still was involving in the music. This is what I ended up with.

Electra Print 300DRD amps with Sophia Meshplates
Electra Print PVA passive pre amp
Cain and Cain Abby speakers-Fostex single driver design
Audio Pro Avantek subwoofer
Tara Labs RSC Master Gen 2 interconnect and speaker cable
Tara Labs Air 3 interconnect
kept the Sony 555 ES cd player. The mods by Tube Research Labs make this an incredible machine.
Nikko Gamma1 tuner. Also have a Nikko Gamma 30 coming soon.

Total cost spent was $3165. Which isn't too bad when you consider that a new pair of Electra Print 300DRD will run at least 2500. The cool thing is that this sounds better in this room than my previous system that was a 17k retail system. Of course I didn't pay that either(all of it was bought used off the net). In this sytem I find that the Electra Print and Sony are areal keepers. But I would love to try a pair of Edgarhorns or Sierra Brooks horns. But that will be for another day when we have lots of cash to throw around. But for now the Cain and Cains will be around for quite awhile.

p.s. just recently acquired a pair of Madisound BK 16 BL horns to play with. Will be a fun winter project.

How is that "budget?"

What I call budget is what I ran for years - an old Philips receiver and some Boston Acoustic A70s (temporarily traded my father for my Infinity Column IIs which my uncle gave to me). Total price paid: $45 (it was a $45 very well spent though!).

Budget is a state of mind. Compared to a 17K system, I would say 3.5K is pretty budget. Though not in my budget for darn sure. Though that system is really not out of reach for many here, we all have our priorities. My priorities are the same as my wifes, whatever she wants them to be. :D
