Hi All,
Look at this beauty. It's a Garrard Model 82 with an ADC cart. Hooker her up and threw on some Dave Brubeck. Sounds very nice!
Anyone know anything about ADC carts? I have a pair of ADC 303ax speakers that are really nice. Actually, I should get them together. They're well suited for each other.
Take care,
Ed

Thanks Patrick,
I'm still wondering exactly what I ment when I said I hookered her up.
The auto stuff isn't working right. It won't go to the 12" setting. I think it just needs some cleaning and lube. It sounds fantastic though! I never really believed that these rim drive TTs could really sound that great, but I may be a convert!
Take care,
Ed

Ed,
I have an ADC 220 cart. (it's red) that I got back in 1969 to upgrade my Voice of Music changer which had an Astatic 133D ceramic cart. (funny how one remembers such things isn't it) I also bought a little black phono preamp from Olson electronics since the Coronado stereo I was using didn't have a mag. input. It looks just like the ones you can still buy today with the inputs on one side and the outputs one the other at one end.
Anyway, it was a great disappointment when I got it all hookered :^) up and there was horrendous hum that the ADC picked up from the unshielded VM motor. Totally unuseable. So, back went the Astatic cart. and the ADC just sat for all these years (the stylus being broken along the way).
I finally got a replacement stylus for the ADC about 6 months ago and I was really surprised at how good it sounded (.7 mil. conical). Of course, ADC went on to make their famous XLM and ZLM carts which are well sought after today.
Your 230XE is a little later development from the 220 (there was also a 220XE which, I'm sure had an eliptical stylus). The cartridge body is very similar to the 220.

I had an ADC that was my favorite in the late 70's. I replaced the stylus once on it too. It was sort of mid grade I had mounted in my Thorens TD 160C at the time, but in my opinion it sounded cleaner, flatter but still more musical than some more expensive cartridges I've used.

Welcome to the world of idler wheel drive!! I'm a Dual nut (no disrespect to Garrard intended), but about a year ago happened upon a Dual 1218 with a ADC MK2 XLM Improved cart in very good shape. Being the good Midwestern boy that I am, I promptly put on a Shure Super Track Type II (Shure being based in Chicagoland). Wonderful sound - finally tied the ADC, & was blown away by the smoothness of the sound, combined with great high ends that Shure has always been known for. Sure (no pun intended) made me an ADC fan...

These ADCs were called the bricks and were heads above the US competition of the day. I still have a couple of the model 25 bodies hoping 1 day to find an NOS stylus for them which was the TOTL. They established a standard to be beaten. The only reason why Shure and Pickering beat them in sales was the pricing structure and not the sound. You could knock off about 70% on a Shure and make mony but the ADC line only had about a 40% markup at best. They underpriced the competition which made them seem lower grade and then you could not discount it as much which made it less of a "deal" to the consumer.

Thanks for all the input!
I've stayed up way to late again listening to my rig. I have Monk on the Garrard right now. I'll tell you this for sure, the Garrard/ADC sounds better than any TT set up I've ever had. Wonderful sound.
I looked on needledoctor and saw a stylus for the 220. It looks like it's the same- wonder if it would fit? If so, I might grab one now, the price sure is right. I'd love to have it on stand by for when this one goes.
Take care,
Ed
