Yep, it is an odd looking table. It's also part of the Sony Precise P7 system (http://www.thevintageknob.org/SONY/sonyvault/PRECISE7/PRECISEP7.html), so though odd looking it should be a fairly decent table.

Looking at the ad again, I just realized the idiots photographed it and may have tested it with the stylus sitting on the mat.

Odd but cool, nice looking arm too, and yep, on the mat and maybe without a stylus. It's a mass seller!!!

I concur, Holst. For some odd reason, I like Sonys of this vintage and am quite fond of the turntables from this '79-'82 period owning two already -- a PS-X500 and a PS-10F. So, I'm seriously considering going for this, but the certainty of destruction in shipment by a PowerSeller is making me hold off.

Is there anyone in LA willing to pick this up and ship it up North properly, if I can win it?

I like it too. Odd, but it looks pretty solid.

I can pick it up. I've never shipped a turntable, but I can follow directions. I've received two turntables in good condition. The shipping Gods must have saved one because the seller didn't do much.

Of course it's weird looking, that may be why I like it. Then again, I'm the guy who likes speakers like these:

:D

I can't help it, really, I like this vintage of Sony gear (1979-1982+). It was the time when they were seriously trying to build great gear to compete with the big boys and largely succeeding. Plus, I remember back in the early '80s all the commercials, advertisements, and word of mouth that led me to believe in my youth that Sony was the best. While I know that not to be true, it is still deeply ingrained way back there in my mind, so seeing a well-made Sony piece just triggers more positive feelings about it than an equal build quality Pioneer, Marantz, or the like. Then again, the build quality on my Sony PS-X500 TT is many times better than this like vintage Pioneer PL-L800 I just picked up. Sony's just a name people like to beat on and ignore for the more popular name brands, doesn't mean their gear isn't better at times.

Charivari,

lucky you - I just received a nice fat pack of lit' from Japan :D
(nothing on the Falcon sets yet as you know)

The Precise was a mid/high-end system disguised into mid-sized units - it was an attempt by Sony to pack "smarter", literally. It didn't do that well (market-wise), just as later 1980s and 90s attempts at the same kind of system...

Anyway, PS-P7X: 10kg and an SBMC base but what's weird looking really is the cover only, the rest is pretty much straightforward, if quite good-looking indeed :)
You can see, too, that its front design is rather close to that of the Falcon TT you already have. Lineup-wise and pricetag-wise, the P7X is just above PS-X60 (or its PS-X65 updated version) and just "below" the PS-X70.

The delivered cart in Japan was the low/mid Sony XL-25A (MM) but you can go with an ol' DL-103 as tracking force is available up to 3g! The arm is rather short (21,6cm effective length) and the original shell is (I believe) coated or made of magnesium...

In other words: almost "high-end-like", not cheap at all but mostly another way to make things differently.
The unit linked to above seems in good shape, although not mint, but Precise units are fairly far and few in between so...
At 30$ it is a steal, at 50$ it is ok, at 100$ I'd still take it but I'm not necessarily a reference when it comes to rare Sony units :D

Thanks for the quick info. So, 10kg? That's heavier than my beloved PS-X500, but the specs on your site don't look near so good. So, when you speak of "high-end-like" you mean not quite there, so not as good as what I already have, but not too shabby either? Well, as I said, I like these oddball Sonys, so I'm going to try for it even if it's just a side-step on my path to better fidelity. At least that Stanton 681 cart should make the endeavor worth it, since I understand that to be a decent cart in it's own right. Which brings up an interesting point, this P7X has a 681, my X500 came with a 680, is there a reason for this trend of Stantons on better Sonys? :scratch2:

Here's to hoping I win this auction, it'll look good hooked up to my Sony STR-VX750 (a cheapish Sony receiver that actually has MC compatibility and a direct keypad frequency entry tuner). Then I'll be well on my way to an odd, but good vintage Sony setup; all I'll need is a pair of APM-8s.

Well, I asked and you answered, so I'll behave myself on other questions. Yep, I won't ask for any info on my recently acquired Pioneer PL-L800 with 6MC cart (http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=53134). Nope, I won't. :D

mebbe the mid/low Sonys were delivered with Stantons in Canada and the USA, but they came with Sony's own carts over here.

lineup-wise, the P7X will be better than your Falcon - at least it was more expensive so I hope it will be :D

Dunno, Micropassatman's Falcon has the Sony cart. Still, two old Sony tables with a Stanton cart is a coincidence, three (http://cgi.ebay.com/SONY-VINTAGE-Turntable-PS-FL1-Servo-Control-WORKING-NR_W0QQitemZ5837346412QQcategoryZ48649QQssPageName ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) is a pattern.

Maybe Stanton was a recommended brand for cart replacement/upgrade to the original Sony carts here in the states.

Well, I didn't get it. One or more of the lurkers decided his karma wasn't worth it and won the auction. I just hope they're local or have someone local to help out else this table will be destroyed in shipment.
