Thought I would show how I packed a McCauley 6174 18" ultra sub. This thing is huge and comes in close to 40 pounds before boxing. I started with a 350 pound double wall box. I lined the bottom with 2 inches of high density foam. I bolted the driver to a piece of 1/2 inch plywood using 1/4" bolts and star nuts. It is held in place with styrafoam corner blocks. These are held in place with 1 inch foam sheets. Then I added 2 inch block to keep the entire piece from lifting off the bottom. I cut some 2 inch foam to fit around the magnet assembly and filled it with three more pieces of 2 inch foam. This thing is bullet proof now. I know it's serious overkill but new this driver was $800. I sold this one on Ebay for $410.

Dat foam is sure purdy.....

Is it more like extruded( hard) or expanded (softer, like a styrofoam cup) polystyrene, polyethylene or like carpet padding?

Where did you get it...

(almost) dying to know...

I'm not sure what kind it is. I get it from work. We have some chassis' made by a contract manufacturer that ships to use using this foam as filler. It is harder than styrofoam, denser than carpet foam and you can cut it with a kitchen knife. If Grumpy sees this, maybe he give some insight, as I know he has been looking for a supplier of this stuff.

Thanks for sharing... I have an Altec 604B that needs to go to Great Plains, and I am terrified to ship it. I was thinking about building a crate, but your approach looks pretty darned sensible.

I've seen that type of foam in electronics packaging too,

I'm voting that is is Polyethylene foam.

vs

Styrofoam which is Polystyrene foam

vs

Polyurethane Foam, which is the foam in place stuff. I have some grey, small celled dense springy foam that I think is also polyurethane.

I've never found foam sheets other than the styrofoam type the are reasonably prices. I'd like to find something with a little more "spring" than styrofoam.

When that much bread is on the line there's no such
thing as overkill. If you didnt pack it the way you did chances
are the only thing that would get killed is the merchandise.
