View Full Version : My dream winter project
WildWest 12-02-2005, 10:22 PM Been waiting over a year...
I'll have my hands full when the parts for these hit! :thmbsp:
Now hmmmmm what finish hmmmmm decisions, decisions...
Mark W. 12-03-2005, 01:41 AM WildWest you got quite a sense of style there. Not quite what I would be dreaming about but then what I want might not turn your crank either.
If I could build a dream project this winter it would be a pair of 16-20 watt Tube Mono block Amps a nice Tube Preamp, A tube tuner with all four in matching Exotic hardwood/Ivory/Anodized Aluminum Cabinets. Then some super fancy wood art work type turn table. Driving a Pair of KLH-17's recabineted to match the components. This would all then set on the wifes antique Walnut side board in the living room.
BUT that ain't gonna happen.
WildWest 12-03-2005, 03:48 AM Well we all have different wants and needs. By chance have you have heard Dr. Edgars product? These Edgars represent to me the end of the road in sonic reproduction. I have traveled near and far listening to speakers that reproduce music in stereo form and nothing does it better than these to me. I've listened to the claims of this manufacturer and that manufacture. This DIYer or that DIYer of how great their stuff is. (Yawn) Ok...
Oh I'm sure Dr Edgar will upgrade even this design because that's what it is all about but I won't be hurting for it any time soon. I have not enjoyed listening to music much since I heard these speakers and I want to get back to that real baaaaad!
WildWest 12-04-2005, 06:32 PM Wow, I thought such a project might stir some interest here and maybe I could get some input. Guess I'm the only one that appreciates Dr. Edgars product. Either than or a kit doesn't qualify as DIY... I won't bother y'all with progress then... :)
jcmjrt 12-04-2005, 08:56 PM I think that they look great. I've heard of Edgar Horns and how wonderful they sound but I've never actually heard a pair of them. I'd love to some day. I'd like to see what the kit is and what you need to do. Did the kit include the veneer selection or do you still have to decide what to cover it in?
tentoze 12-04-2005, 09:05 PM The impression I got from talking with Dr. Edgar at T.H.E. Show in January was that full "kits" weren't being offered due to his experience with shabbily-finished products being re-sold as factory Edgarhorns. I may have misinterpreted things, though. Exactly what are you getting in a "kit'?
Kegger 12-05-2005, 03:00 AM The Edgar stuff is very well recieved but I just can't afford it although I do love projects
including kits so I for one would love to see your progress!
"I'm sure many others will to once they see it in action"
Billfort 12-06-2005, 08:11 AM Well, you don't need to hear from me on this here Dave, you already have an inbox full of my thoughts on your project. :)
As you know, the Edgar Titan with horn subs is the best sounding speaker system I've ever heard - bar none - and would be the 'end game' for me, so I guess I'm saying congratulations!
I think the real challenge though (aside from a sub that isn't a real horn :) ) will be getting all the Edgar parts into a cabinet of some sort that is 'domestically' friendly. The really tricky piece will be designing a structure to mount those 3 drivers so the voice coils align - especially that Fane tweeter. I know you have some ideas and I'll be interested to see them but whatever it is, it's going to be BIG and take some serious bribery to get by Kelly.
As much as I love the Edgar stuff though, I often think it's just too strange looking to get by 99.9999% of the women out there if you want to stick it in your living room. Maybe it's just the implementations I've seen so far and you have a good take on it but even Edgar's latest, smaller, more home friendly (?) design shown here (Slimline Reference) is to me...something you gotta stick in that man-cave listening room, rarely to be seen by spouses and guests.
Keep us posted and where you're going.

The Slimline Reference didn't appear all that intrusive to me, but I suppose it's all relative. O, and they also didn't sound that pleasing to my ear, either.
Those look like one heck of a cool project, one you've dreamed about for a long while WW.
I'd like to read the blow by blow as the project comes together. :thmbsp:
I've never had the chance to hear a pair, but I don't get out much :smoke:
mhardy6647 12-06-2005, 09:11 AM I have a tube hi-fi buddy on the North Shore of MA with raw MDF titans and the seismic subwoofer. I think at this point he has TAD and JBL drivers, but I am not certain of that, nor do I know what driver's in the subwoofer.
Some of the best sound I have ever heard. Plus... yours'll look nice.
Billfort 12-06-2005, 09:16 AM I've only heard/seen the original Slimline so can't comment on the Reference Toze. I will say that of the 3 occasions I heard the Slimline, it sounded real bad on one occasion where it was being used in a small hotel room, firing across the room so you where sitting nearfield and playing some seedee source I didn't care for.
On the other 2 occasions (MAF) it was being demoed by Bruce in a fairly large room and using his small sealed sub. It was a tough sell for me since it was in the room next to his Titans but aside from the bass which I didn't care for, I felt that they sounded very good with a nice sense of dynamics, speed and presence that just isn't there with most speakers. I came away thinking that if you could deal with the bass, they represented a true bargain and would be top of my 'serious audition' list if I was going to buy in that price range.
Horns are an animal unto themself and they can sound truly horrible if done wrong or used in the wrong system. I have heard more horns that I didn't like than ones I did but do feel Edgar's stuff is the best of the breed. I would never recommend somebody get into this stuff blind and ABSOLUTELY 'try-before-buy' - there is a very good chance you won't like horns. It's a very personal taste kind of thing really and the things I like about a good horn system often have me at odds opinion wise with others on speakers - especially when you get to the small cone/high power & current demand stuff.
Now in WildWest's case, I was with him while he listened to many, many systems from hi-dollar hi-power hi-end systems with low efficiency speakers all the way through to a half-dozen or so hi-dollar horn systems. I shut the hell up and let him listen and draw his own conclusions. The fact that he kept going back to the Titans (over and over and over) and said when he left that someday he would own those as they where the best he had ever heard, makes me happy to hear he is going to take the leap.
Sorry I missed this thread. I've been laying low for a while but I'm back to posting more frequently. I'll throw another vote in for the Titans as well. I heard them at the MAF and they did somethings better than I've heard from any loudspeaker. Just more of a sense of "there" and unlike my system you don't have to be positioned in the sweet spot for the magic. Hell, you don't even need to be in the room! They just like a real band of musicians playing. Incredible stuff! So how's the project coming along? Spkrman57 has put together one Edgarhorn system and is about to do another one. He may be of assistence with your project.
Good luck today! I'm pulling for Seattle but if Pitt wins I'll be happy for ya! MikE
