View Full Version : Let's See How You Use Your Pioneer Stuff!
Retro Stereo 12-28-2005, 02:25 PM Here is a picture of my living room that was taken today. I run a 6.1 channel surround system using six (3 mint pairs) Pioneer HPM 100 speakers. You can see three in the picture (two in the corners and one up on the entertainment center) and the other three are behind me. That is one of the heaviest center channel speakers ever made!
The HT receiver I use is an Onkyo TX-DS787 I bought over three years ago new. It kicks out an amazing 135 wpc into those six HPM 100s! When I really want to jam to some good music, I turn down the JBL powered 150 watt floor-firing subwoofer, and switch the receiver to "All Channel Stereo" and ALL SIX of those HPM 100s kick out wonderful music in SIX CHANNEL STEREO! :D The whole house just shakes!
When I want to just listen to some serious two-channel stereo music, up on the entertainment center, to the left of the HPM 100 center channel speaker, is a Pioneer Elite M-91 power amp (200 wpc into 8 ohms) and a Pioneer Elite stable platter PD-M90X CDP that is hooked directly into the amp! No preamp or any other interference, just pure CDP and Power! I have that system hooked up to a pair of freshly rebuilt Ohm 4 speakers (thanks JimBecky). The speakers are on casters and I roll them out to a sweet spot in the living room. In the picture, you'll notice that the M-91 (orange power bars) is pumping some sweet power into those Ohm 4s and I'm listening to them while typing right now.
Hey, that's just the living room, in the near future I'll get some pictures of some racked silver SPEC systems down in the family room I've put together over the years.
I showed you mine, now let's see yours!!!

Here is a stacked set of 2 HPM-100's, 4 HPM-60's and 2 HPM-40's.
The SX-3000 drives the the 40's and 1 pair of 60's.
The SX-980 drives the 100's and 1 pair of 60's.
I split the signal from the pre-amp of the SX-980 into both receivers.
Awesome full bodied, clear and bright!
Will probably re-arrange everything again tomorrow!

I don't believe so.It is a measure type device.I just dug out the manual and it shows to hook it in the same terminals as the speaker. But running it off a "B" set of speaker terminals should be the same I would think.

You are correct sir! Bought two pairs new in 1986. Radio Shack half price sale. Have used them exclusively since. Had one pair's woofers professionally refoamed a few years ago. And I took on the other pair myself in July of 05'. Also a pair of Mach Ones are in use atop some HPM-200's in mybedroom system. I have some CS-88's, CS-99A's, and some Kenwoods. But I have always been partial to the Twos. They sound great with surround movies and are perfect speakers for my personal tastes. I like to Rock! so they do the job for me.The Ones are no slackers either!
By the way I know someone in Murfreesboro, TN that wants to sell a pair of Mach Twos if someone local to them is interested. I have no idea the price or condition as this time.

As I've found out, they're nice speakers! VERY well-balanced, prehaps the MOST well-balanced speaker I've ever heard, and I've heard lots. I wanted to try out some HPM-100s, but now that I've got these, I'm not so sure of that anymore...if I find a dirt cheap set, I might, but I'm pretty damn satisfied with the M2's.. :D I noticed you have those super-tweeters too, how do those add to the overall sound? I'm thinking of finding and getting a set but some input first hand would be nice. thanks!
madpioneer 01-03-2006, 04:47 PM Originally Posted by PioneerGuy85

Well I have had a pair adorning the top M2 since around 87. I blew the original Realistic ones while sending a keyboard thru them at very high volume and replaced them with the newly badged Radio Shack ones. I bought them intially out of curiousity. I had no idea if they would even sound good with the M2's. Well once I tried them I was hooked. They just catch that hi-hat tsss tsss sound and project it nicely. A friend recently came by. He has a SX-949 with some HPM-100's and some homemade cabs with subs in them. He had heard my setup in it's prior configuration but not at my new home. I sat him in the sweet spot and ran about three pre-arranged tunes at about 150 watts peak. He was amazed and kept asking about the super tweets. He shouted at one point Damn! Those super tweets are hot!. He inquired how you hook them up and mentioned he was going to try to get some. I know there not for everyone. But they do compliment the M2's without over powering the soundstage with piercing highs. They just add that oh so sweet tss tss to vocals and cymbals. I see them get snatched up on ebay all the time. Even tho the M2's are great speakers, don't know if I could run them without the supertweets. I have just grown accustomed to that sound.

madpioneer 01-04-2006, 08:02 AM orignally posted by AudioMixer Hey dude, man I love your Pioneer setup! Where did you get that pioneer lighted sign, ebay?
The lighted sign I won on ebay from Australia if IIRC. I battled someone for it, they got tired of trying to outbid me and contacted me to find out who I was. I guess they may have thought some young kid was playing games. Wind up costing more than I wanted to spend but then again I have gotten so many bargains on gear it all evens out. Fits oh so perfect in that space at the bottom of the rack otherwise an empty boring space would be seen. Its on anytime the SPEC is on. So while watching movies it reminds you of the walkway track lights at public theaters as I turn out all the other room lights except for the sign.
orignally posted by AudioMixer I too still have my long hair and I too like you don't fit in todays crowd which suites me just fine to.
Well I am with ya brother. Not too many have the courage to keep thier hair long or have to conform to societies rules. I used to hear women loved guys with long hair? :scratch2: But I keep it this way for personal reasons. When I got divorced I decided I was tired of being manipulated and kept on a short leash. So I reverted back to who I really am. So what you see is what you get. :thmbsp:
88gibson 01-09-2006, 08:22 PM I thought I would share my living room setup with you. Up front driving two hpm 100's is a sx-1250. Taking power to the rear is an sa-9800 via two Mach Ones. This is all hooked up to a computer. When it's not doing musical duty it doubles as a kick ass theater setup. The computer decodes the dolby digital 5.1 and sends the front signal to the sx-1250, and the rear to the sa-9800. The center channel is a sa-608 hooked up to three klipsch speakers. The end result smokes most home theaters I've heard for the price. Hell it smokes anything i've heard. The bass kicks! If I had any kidney stones they're gone now! Who needs subs? My end goal has been achieved, which is using my old gear in a multimedia setup. I can play cds, high quality streams, mp3s(I know some sound like crap), movies, and occasional vinyl. All this through the best gear the audio industry had to offer. Vintage meets new! Always a croud pleaser!

Basically no life as the 'normal' crowd would see it. But I live happily with my vintage and music/concert/movie collection just fine. :music:
Back in the day of the Motley Crue look I had women picking me up nightly at the club. Nowdays they don't even look twice. :tears: Suits me fine. I have created a world of my own at home. :D
Hi madpioneer!
Glad to see you adopt the same sort of policy as myself - except for one exception, I have got a wife!! Yes, I was into Crue, Ratt, Poison, Cinderella etc as well as 100`s of other bands - I still am into it, big style. I have few (what I call real) friends, I DONT drink, smoke or take drugs but I love rock n roll and if that classifies me as being on the outside of mainstream society - I really couldn`t give a shit!! I love old Hi-Fi equipment, 70`s cars and motorbikes, photography etc etc - I like my world!! It`s called individuality and we`re all guilty of it and like you say I`m proud of it  :thmbsp:
My Pioneer gear: - Pioneer DT-510 Digital Timer, Pioneer PL-A35 T/Table, Pioneer TX-9800 Tuner, Pioneer TX-D1000 Tuner, Pioneer P-D70 CD Player, Pioneer SA 9800 Amp, Pioneer SG9800 Graphic Equaliser, Pioneer HPM 60 Speakers and 2 pairs of Pioneer Monitor 10 Headphones!! :music: :tresbon:
My other gear: - Pioneer DT-510 Digital Timer, Thorens TD-166 MKII T/Table, Nakamichi Cassette Deck 2, Yamaha surround sound processor, Mission Cyrus Amplifier, Mission Cyrus PSX external transformer, Pioneer TX301L Tuner and Linn Index II Speakers (Bi-Wired with Chord flatline interconnect)
ITS ALL ROCK N ROLL TO ME!!!!!!!!:thmbsp:

TiberiuS 11-29-2006, 02:33 PM Here's my humble setup, the main system before I sold the Wharfedales (the speakers on the outside) the other weekend. Got the SA-9500 and 9800 bi-amped into the lovely Celestion A3's, the 9800 doing bass and 9500 doing mid and treble through the 9500's preamp. On the left there's an old Sharp minidisc, Technics RS-M265X tape deck and the 2 amps, in the middle the CT-F850, SG-9500, PD-M435 CD, SX-1250 and the PL-550 complete with the 8mm silver interconnects. On the right a Pioneer 25 CD jukebox, Technics A900 pre/power, Technics SL-1500, Pioneer PL-12D and SA-708. Too much gear, not enough to stand it all on at the moment, I'm planning on making something for it all soon :scratch2:

Good to know I am not completely alone out here!
And as an added note I now have a girlfriend after so many years going it alone. She loves my stuff :naughty: (stereos too!). Shes into Twisted Sister and Def Leppard and any real hard stuff from the 80's  so I think I have it good.
Although she has been going thru some treatments for health issues we are planning a nice weekend together soon :smlove: with the tunes jamming.:thmbsp:
So hopefully soon it will be......:butt1: :whip: :zoom: :smlove: :naughty:  :yikes:
and then probably....:D :boring:
pioneernut 11-29-2006, 10:31 PM For what its worth, heres a little of what I got. This is my main system I use regularly. Alot of what I got is waiting for a finished basement. As with all things, theres never enough money to do everything you want.
If your wondering whats up with the paper towel under the TC-640 heads... I was dubbing an old Acetate tape over to a new Maxell. Lucky it didn't shed tape, it just wouldn't stay flat against the head.

QX-9900 I got today, to be used in Living room as H.T. as soon as I can lift 50#. (Had disc surgery on Neck this past Wednesday. Doing good, no pain, had fusion with plates.) Have 2 pair of Criterion 4X's I want to use for this. They sound good as or better than the Sansui's. Re-capped and new L-pads.

Mark is right, from 'that auction site'.....
I have mine plugged to the 'switched' receptacle on the SX-1250. I made some small brackets that hold the fixture yet are hidden and the wire runs thru the wall and comes out right behind the reciever and plugs right in so that no wires are showing. When I flip on the system, the light goes on also.
M0t0wn 09-25-2009, 08:10 PM This is how I use my Vintage Pioneer, it's in the Garage. The living room has a modern (black) Pioneer receiver and a 300+1 carrousel Pioneer Elite CD player.
The Garage amplifier is a SA-9500, then from the bottom CS 8282, VSX D506S that I can not get a lot of info on. It is used as a Tuner since I got the SA. Then a NAD 5330 CD player that was almost given to me in a Garage sale. I love the lack of buttons on that one. On top a RG-1. If you don't have one of these get one quick they are cheap and very interesting.
Of to the side not in the picure, but hooked to the amp up is a CTM5R, a casette player that holds 6 cassettes. Very conveniant if you have a lot of tapes and are working on a project.
The SA 9500 has a hum that has to get fixed this winter. The speakers are HPM 100 that are sitting on shelves. Did I mention that my Living room speakers are JAMO D165. Dont ask where I got them from.
Now let's see yours!

JupiterSSJ4 10-05-2009, 05:19 PM My (extremely inadequate compared to everyone else's) setup.
Numark TTUSB (I really want a 70s SL-560 or 570)
SX-680 receiver (30WPC at 8 Ohms)
CS-66G (40WPC max at 8 Ohms)
Other things are PS2 Slim for movies and CDs hooked up to Logitech Z-680 5.1 system (500W RMS) and my old tv and record collection.
NealinNevada 10-06-2009, 08:00 AM Here is the living room system...it use to run through a set of HPM-150's, but replaced with Bozak B-4000's. One DVR-7000 (the one in the rack) is used for cd's, the other (under the tv) for DVR's and recording. The HPM-150's have been moved to the bedroom and there I use an SX-1050 mostly for radio ( can't sleep :boring: in silence, got to have sound). In the kitchen I have a SX-D7000 running through a set of EPI 200's. Finally in the guest bedroom there is an SX-750 running through a set of Pioneer CS-06 speakers.

Very nice setup Jess !! I just moved into my new house the first of Oct. I'll post my new setup soon .... Where did you get those metal shelves and do the wheels lock?
pioneervato 10-06-2009, 08:39 PM The racks are from Lowes. The wheels are sold separately and they do lock. The rack is 18x24x36 without the wheels and 41" high with the wheels. I added some 1/2" baltic birch plywood and drilled holes in alignment with the posts to allow the plywood shelved to slip over the posts and rest on the metal shelves.
This photo does not show that as the mod was done after the photo was taken. The new shelves really make it look nicer and adds a nice solid platform for the gear to sit on and keeps the feet of the gear from falling through the metal shelves. I was using 1/4" masonite as a temporary solution.

Nice extra touches ... didn't you also mod an Ikea expedit record shelf? I saw some pictures before that looked nice as well with the added base.

paul w 10-09-2009, 06:16 PM Man, when I was 18, I spent hours wandering around audio shops drooling over stuff like this!
Anyway, to bring the word 'modest' down to it's most basic, here's my rig.
Yeah baby, look and quiver!
