View Full Version : Best junk sale finds!
Okay. . . you know somebody had to start this thread in this forum, especially since it's been done in all the others. I couldn't help myself because the stories are always so fun.
What's your best music gear find or finds at SA, GW, garage/yard sales, dumpster diving, curbside, etc.
Here's my list:
-- Leslie 900 speaker cabinet -- found in alley behind my house, worked perfectly - FREE
-- 1981 Reissue Ludwig Black Beauty snare -- fully engraved, blue/green badge, $25
-- Optigan -- from my dad via my uncle via his brother who was gonna junk it, came with about 20 discs, fully working and FREE
Most envy-inducing moment: A buddy of mine came back from a flea market with two pristine 1960s Gibson ES-175s. Haggled the guy down to $250 from $350 for BOTH of them! :thmbsp:
The great stereo stuff I've ever gotten is:
-- Sony TC-366 Quad R2R, free from family friend
-- Original first generation Polk Audio Mini Monitors, free from father-in-law
-- Marantz 1090 integrated amp, 250 SEK, (overseas in Sweden)
-- Marantz 2100 tuner, 250 SEK (overseas in Sweden)
-- Lenco L85 TT, free from family friend

Considering this forum section and posting title, did this thread get of course from the very start :scratch2:
I assumed the poster was asking for best juck store find of musical Instruments :scratch2:
Oh, by the way I've never found a musical Instrument yet, and as I can't play any I probably won't :D

Found a real nice german clavichord that a musician buddy was dying to have complete with case/stand at a thrift for $19.99.
He was thrilled to have it and said it should have been priced inthe hundreds not $20.
I see trumpets and trombones, the occasional sax.
Junk geetars and a few nice ones.
But the only instrument at a thrift I have ever purchased was the clavi.

I got a nice Hammond tone wheel organ for $25 at a Salvation Army. I had a shot at a full blown church organ with two huge (like 4'x3'x3') powered speaker enclosures for $100. Unfortunately, my wife was with me. She implied that if the organ came home I may as well not bother coming with it.

1969 Ramirez Classical for $5.00 at a garage sale. Sold it for way under market value and still made a huge profit. Shure Vocal Masters for $10.00 that I parted out for the CTS Alnico 10"s...all of them mint. Handmade mid '70's very limited production (I think under 250) Mahogany Les Paul copy by Univox free from a family friend. He bought it for his daughter to take lessons on and she never played it. Still had the hang tags on it. Sold it for $1,000 in the late 80's. 2 sleeves of RCA Blackplate 6v6's from an old Radio shop for $20....I could keep on going but this was all in the 80's and early 90's. Ebay and the internet has pretty much ruined it for these kind of finds. They are still out there though. I just picked up a pair of NOS quality late 60's KLH 17's for $10.00 at a thrift shop last week.
Shure Vocal Masters for $10.00 that I parted out for the CTS Alnico 10"s.
I have a pair of these drivers. Very good and tight tone. 16 ohm alnico drivers out of the same cab. Mine was free from the recycling plant.

Well, if you knew him I don't think you'd say that. He's pretty low-key and by no means a braggart. He was mostly elated by his luck, and he's a poor working jazz guitar player who appreciated the instruments immensely. He didn't hawk them immediately to cash in. As a working musician trying to support a family (I know, it's almost an oxymoron), it was the first time he could actually afford quality instruments, let alone vintage. He still has them both, and he sold the Japanese guitar that he played throughout music school and gigged with for years.
The old guy that sold them to him at the flea market found them in a closet at an estate sale, probably paid a lot less, and thought he was cleaning up. I've often found out it's dealers who often exploit the people needing the goods versus the other way around.
So take it easy before you start judging and name-calling. In this case, I think the deal went to the right person for a change.

OK, in taht case its a nice deal. I just have seen to many ripoffs who find an already rock bottom price on a vintage piece from someone who doesnt know better, and then try to rip the person off .They turn around and make a bundle and then brag about it.Thats unethical. I have no problem

OK, well, than i'm sorry. I was wrong.I junped to conclusions because a fair ethical person woould go right ahead and by a 57 strat for 5 dollars if thats what the person was selling it for, but a scumbag would say--well, i will give you 3.50.
I also forgot to say that the reason he haggled him down was because that's all he had. He wasn't trying to twist the knife or anything.

An old Wurlitzer Accordion, in actually really decent condition, with a really beat up case, last weekend at a HS Flea market. $40 bucks! And no, I have no clue how to play the darned thing! :D
That was on the way home from picking up an Appalachian Dulcimer from Craigslist, And No, I can’t play it either! :lmao:
(I did find a way to tune it from the internet though!)
Hey there Rockmonton,
I really regret that I had to sell it several years ago. I was moving overseas, desperately needed money, and had to pare down. I figured it needed to be played instead of sitting in a box. :pity:

Hey there DaWoofer,
Sorry for the late reply. Been very busy and just moved.
It doesn't perform at all. It sits in a box without the FF working. It was a fabulous curbside find outside the apartment next to my house. Now that I've moved, I have space for a real workbench for a clinical teardown.
They're supposed to be the only vintage Kenwood decks worth keeping, mostly because of the 3 ferrite heads. Made in Japan and built like a tank, but I never got beyond a brief plug in test. Other reviews on this forum claim it's a solid performer but can't compete with the classic silver Pioneers and Marantz decks of the same period. It's got a fine bias adjustment and cool big old VU meters. Quite reasonable to find inexpensively.
Some day soon it will live again!

Old silverface Vibrochamp--$25. Bought it off an 80 year old guy that lived down the street from me. He used it playing in the church group. Still had the original tubes in it he said. He had a Bassman head, a Leslie unit, and a couple of mid 60's strats that he didn't want to part with. When he passed on his wife gave everything to an auctioneer to sell before I had a chance to talk with her about purchasing any of it. :tears:

Best scores I missed: 2 '70s-vintage Wurlitzer organs with Orbit Synthesizers for $3.88 each. Dammit! I need a bigger station wagon.

"Thats disgusting-youre freind is a scumbag with no class. He didnt have the F*in decency to pay 350.00 for both even-hejust had to be a complete schister.I wouldnt brag about that."
All's fair in dealing and not dealing. If I don't like the price I can ask him to lower it. If HE lowers it is HIS choice. Most of the flea baggers try to scam you out of money for items when they KNOW they are overcharging you. This lucky guy just go the upper hand once. He should be applauded.
For example. I just bought a H/H 330c for $20. It was marked $30 which I felt was TOO high of a risk. Needless to say when I got it home the "it works" sticker was a misnomer. There were several problems but most of which have been fixed. Does that change the fact that the seller told me everything worked? No.
So if you can get a better price I say more power to you.

Got this Fender Princeton at a yard sale in the 70's for 5 bucks, been dragging it around for years. Had it retubed and rebiased recently. The skinny on it was that it originally was a combo amp, but it had been cut down to a head.
I checked it out, sure enough, that was right. 15 watts of pure mellow guitar tube amp power. Pic below.
Also, I found a Sony Reel to Reel at the local dump free. Probably some guy's wife made him dump it as it was lovingly set aside from all the junk. Last
week a friend gave me a Marantz 2275 free. That brought me here.

Looks like fun toys! I love the glass!Since I can't handle six strings,I sold the Guild to a lifelong buddy for what I payed. It has a wonderful home now,and gets more attention. We dated it to '63,as it still had the paper label glued inside that put it from the Jersey?-factory(I'd have to look it over again),but he did some more research and put it pretty firm at '61.I recall the factory moved in '63 ,and this one was made before the move.He also knew the owner, about when he bought it,and could verify some things with family. That's as close as I can recall. When it comes out the case,it suddenly seems like Saturday night,1964 at the VFW.The old penciled setlist in the case sure reads like it. :scratch2:Thought you might like this one from last Friday night - B15-S It has the Altec upgrade and I have the cover.38088

My old bassist left a B-15s in my basement to store about five years ago. I recently bought a bass for the odd gig and some recording. I dragged the Ampeg out, dusted it off, and was floored by the sound. I've used Ampeg guitar amps for years, but never had occasion to use a bass rig. Sweeeet! By the way, what does the Altec speaker look like? My guitar amps all have Jensens, but the B15s's speaker is unmarked.
That one's from the Magnavox era, isn't it?

43397 Altec 421A looks kinda like this! I'm pretty sure the amp is Magnavox era-or possibly about the time they were negotiating the sale.Oh-the green and black leads are stock-the white are from an old Ampeg V-4 cabinet because I added a 1/4" jack.Made sense to use the "by ESOTERIC AUDIO USA" wire! *** ampegdan ***-you might have a little knowledge of this amp.I can pretty much date it to 1971.There is an aluminum plate riveted to the back of the cabinet-it says "Quigley Music Studios". A Kansas City studio recording amp, maybe? The amp looks like a pro recap job was done in the past, but wasn't converted to a grounding line power cord till recently-still has Magnavox 7027's.It's running strong.

Not so long ago I found a large, traditional Chinese "Gu Zheng" instrument in the TRASH (free! :D ). I've found audio gear I liked more, but as far as instruments go, this was the best. Beautiful thing, and worth a couple hundred dollars. It looks much like the one the lady is holding in the picture here: http://www.israel-music.com/hong_ting/chinese_traditional_zheng_music/
[Note: the background music on that site is from a different instrument; this one is plucked, not bowed, and sounds more like a Japanese Koto, which is derived from it and pretty much the same.]
At first I was thinking of selling it (to buy vintage audio gear :D ) because neither I nor my wife knows how to play it. It is very decorative and I would keep it if we had a lot of space or a real "music room", but since space is very limited here, it can't be a "keeper". It will go to someone who will put it to real use, rather than just keep it as a decoration.
When I took it to the nearby music place that specializes in these (teaching and selling 'em), they told me they only dealt with the ones that are tuned to the traditional 5-note Chinese music scale. The one I found is based on the Western 8-note scale, instead. That got me thinking, and I decided to hang on to it to record its tones as digital "samples" to play with in my gradually-developing home studio. Should lead to some interesting sound experiments. Once I've finished recording lots of samples of it being strummed, plucked, picked and otherwise almost-abused, I'll try to sell it elsewhere.
Over my lifetime, though, there was one musical-instrument find I'd rate higher. Back when I was a teenager and actively playing woodwinds, I got an alto saxaphone from a garage sale for some ridiculously cheap price (either $2 or $5, I think). It was a very early saxaphone, with a few keys that were different in design from the "standard" saxaphone of today. It was made of an unusually soft silver alloy (Yep, contained a nice percentage of real silver!) that helped give it a very warm, funky-fuzzy sound, mellower than the harder-metal modern ones. I restored it and played it for a few years, and loved it. Ultimately lost it when our house burned down.

I got a Ghu Zeng on an ebay auction (no other bidders.) A pawn shop in Edmonton, Alberta had it listed as a "sitar." A new set of strings (steel with silk wrap) cost more than the hundred-something I payed for the instrument. It's an awesome instrument that I use and have recorded with (it's on my latest c.d. @ www.johnada.com.)
Best score otherwise: a family friend was renovating a newly purchased house and suggested I come over to check out this piano they got with the house. Pulled into the middle of a room that was in process of being re-gyprocked(!), covered in dust with cans of nails and hand tools left on top, I found a near mint condition 1912 Heintzman upright piano. I struck one bass note and said....mmmmm, I'll take it. I offered them $500 and ended up paying about $700 I think.

Both my Gibsons came to me by good fortune.
1954 Gibson ES150. $300.
Walked into a music store while I was on the road and there were 2 of them hanging on the wall. No prices so I ask. Guy (owner) tells me some old guy brought them in that morning on consignment and he didn't even want to take them in since at that time (late 80s) nobody was buying old jazz boxes. He tells me $300 each and they both have the original faux alligator archtop cases. I pick the nicer one of the two, give him the $120 I had in my pocket for a deposit and haul back to the hotel to scrounge the rest (for both guitars) from the other guys in the band. I get enough for both and rush back to the store. Too late, somebody already grabbed the other one so I pay off mine and head back to the hotel.
1957 Gibson ES125T (thinbody). Free.
About 5 years ago I as sitting in a local bar tossing down a couple cold ones during a football game and there's this older guy (70s maybe) who's always in there doing his usual lighthearted pestering of everyone on everything from the way they dress to their hair. One of those guys. He starts on me about my hair (long) and I'm giving it back to him so we sit next to each other and just talk for a while. Turns out he's a guitar player who doesn't play much anymore and tells me his main axe is a Peavey T60 he uses for VFW gigs and stuff. I say those are damn nice guitars and he agrees. I tell him I live right next door and I have a guitar I bet he'd like to see. We walk over to my place and I pull out the 54 ES150 I got in the previous story. He likes it and says he has one other guitar he hasn't touched in maybe 15 years. In fact he tells me it's in the case sitting in his basement. I don't even ask what kind of guitar it is but kind of rag on him about keeping guitars underground and the condensation and corrosion problems that occur over the years. "Keep it in a closet of you can't keep it out" & "even the attic is better than the basement" kind of stuff. He says I should check it out and he lives a block away so off we go.
We get to his place and he tells me to wait in the living room, he'll go get it. He goes downstairs and comes back up with a Yamaha acoustic case. I still don't know what's inside so I'm not on pins & needles or anything. He opens it and I just about crap. Except for a few details (dot vs. trapazoids, no binding and the thin body) it looks just like my 54 ES150. He tells me to play it. Strings are all crappy and dead, intonations is off, but I manage a few bars of some jazzy stuff and hand it back to him. "Nice guitar, but you really need to take better care of it" I tell him. His reply? "How about if you just take it. You play better than me and someone like you should have it". I tell him I can't afford it but I'll set it up for him and he should keep it upstairs from now on. He asks me if I just want it for free. I tell him it's far too valuable to just give away and he tells me he got it for free about 30 years ago for fixing a friend's kid's bike so it's no real loss to him. I say no and he insists telling me "My nephew wants this, but only so he can sell it on ebay and I don't want that". I say there has to be someone in his family that would play it and just says 'nope'. Then he tells me "You just take it and play it. Take care of it like it was your own and if I never see you again, it's yours".
Damn right I play it.
There have been lots of other good to great scores over the years, but those 2 are by far the best one's I've had. I still have both of them and have no plans on not having them any time soon.
Cheers,
- JJ
