I DO have a quick question for everyone, I JUST scored A BA-3000 and CA-3000 alomg with a TU 9900 tuner when I went to visit my brother. WOW its SO cool to see them LIGHTS and BIG ole meters :music: BUT..... When I FIRST turn on the BA-3000 after not using it for a day or so, it takes about 2 MINUTES for it to come out of PROTECTION. After that it WORKS OUTSTANDING, comes out of protection in about 2-3 seconds the rest off the time. IS THIS NORMAL? :scratch2: I thank you ALL for your time....Michael...

PS: I am new to the seperates, I have a TON of G series units and AUs, but this is my first BA....Also, I tried the AMP ALONE, to make sure it wasnt in the Ca 3000 and its the AMP for sure.

first off congradulations on the setup :thmbsp: .i myself so far have the ba3000, and tu9900 and hopefully soon either a ca2000 or ca3000.as for the protection curcuit on yours not coming out of protect for about 2 minutes after a days use does not sound right.i dont think mine does that but i wouldn be able to tell you because i cant seem to turn it off for any longer than than 12 hrs and even after that long it only still takes the usal 2-3 seconds.hopefully someone else will chime in and voice their thoughts.

My guess is that the power supply electrolytics are drying out due to non-use. This is common with electrolytics. However, there could be good news. If you contimue to use the beast, keep a log of power-up delays. If after a few days the times are getting a bit shorter then the electrolytics are re-forming the oxide layer they need to operate correctly. Eventually you should be down to around 5-15 seconds.

And, the correct way to re-start an old vintage unit is on a variac - but don't worry, if it didn't BANG! and produce acrid white smoke you're probably good to go.

Long term, you may have to replace all the old electrolytics. This is not a given. I have seen 10 year old electrolytics go south whereas my G-8000 at 28 years of age has virtually perfect electrolytics. The reason is probably that this unit was in use all of it's life before I bought it off the guy in Wisconsin.

Ill post pics as SOON as I get back to Wisconsin, Im still out of town. TODAY when it was turned on, it took around 3 secs to come out of protection, so I hope with constant use the issues will dissapate. and thanks for your chiming in.... Michael....

hi michael,

glad to hear it seems to be operating correctly now and that it somewhat fixed itself.hopefully it continues to operate properly .cant wait to see some pics.which reminds me i have to take some of mine now with the tu9900 and post them.

so what speakers are you going to be running with your setup?i'm currently running some d9's with mine and besides the midrange which is lacking a bit on them i beginning to like the combination,so much so i might be on the hunt for another ba3000 and run them mono.

Michael,

Congratulations. I've really enjoyed my CA/BA 3000 and TU 9900 and I know you will too. Hope the protection light thing resolves itself but as Paul said it may eventually require some attention.

Enjoy

Mike :D

The speakers that I am using right now are JBL 4312s, SOUND GREAT !!! When I get home they will be hooked up to ALTEC Stonehendge 1s, and a pr of JBL Libra 53s (soon to be Altec model 19s) but cant wait to hear the "BEAST" with my setup at home and give her a good workout, sounds like she needs the exercise after all that sitting around....LOL . Shes in GREAT shape, BUT still needs to get the heart pumping.... CANT WAIT to post the pics also.... Thanks again...Michael...

My brother & I are very different in that he loves Steelers football & I don't.
I'm playing with the BA-3000/Ca-3000 while HE watches the game! :D

Gonna miss this gear when he goes home.

Mike,
The DC offset may need adjusting on the amp. If you want to bring it up for a quick tweak, before you go back, I don't have anything on the bench right now.

My BA 5000 has the same problem. It can take 20-30 seconds or sometimes a minute or two to come out of protect. Once it is out is plays fine.

I think EW gave a good explanation , doesn't seem like it's a big problem. I've never bother to fix mine.

You might also try to power up the unit with the speaker switches OFF (no speakers connected). This can often shorten the protection test cycle as it doesn't have to wait for the speaker driver circuits to settle down.

This shortens my G-8000 power-on cycle by a couple of seconds.
