After much deliberation and side by side comparison, pictures were very close, JVC had the edge in stretch modes, Hitachi was a 51" as compared to 48", Hitachi easier to operate, JVC was less expensive, but in the end I went to a HT forum and there were just too many complaints about the JVC on different issues and comparing the two I couldn't see a glaring reason to choose the JVC and risk any of the issues I read about so I went with:

(this is not where I got it from it just shows a good picture ;) )

Nice set Thor. I looked at the same one and about the only reason I didn't ask for one is that the base seemed to be intregal to the set and I didn't care about the speakers and wanted to get the set up into the shelving unit. I am sure you will have some great fun watching the movies on it.
What kind of DVD player are you going with?

A progressive scan one. I will use the coax digital out to the reciever for sound, thats why I ponied up the extra $$$ for the upper level Denon, I originally was gonna get a lower level Denon for less that didn't have 5.1 built in but had 5.1 inputs and then get a DVD player with the decoder and the analog 5.1 outputs but discovered that added about $100 to the price of a progressive scan DVD and in the end I would have paid more than getting a better reciever that had 5.1 built in and a DVD that didn't have the analog outputs.

Any recommendations for a DVD, there are many progressive scan ones for $100 or less I can choose from.

Awesome Thor, you are gonna be luvin that bad boy! Finally a "real" set to watch eh? As far as an excellent prog. scan DVD player for next to nothing look no further than the Panasonic RP 82. The price is right around 200 bucks and its just as good as the RP 91 at a third of the cost. Check into it and I think you'll agree. Have fun! :beerchug:

Very nice Thor !
How much did this set you back ?

A few tips to get the best out of the set:

Find yourself a DVD with test signals for setting up TVs.
eg. AVIA or use the signals off a DVD with THX Optimizer (NOT Optimode which only setup your TV for that particular DVD).

Switch off the Advanced Scan Velocity Modulation and all those auto modes.

Set the color temperature control to 6500K.

Follow WildWest's advice on the Panasonic RP82.
Nothing comes close plus the Panny doesn't have the chroma bug.

Then sit back and enjoy !

I got a Samsung P-231 for about 90 bucks, progressive scan, something is not right tho, cable looks better than DVD, do old DVD's (days of thunder) not look as nice as new ones? (ice age, I saw in showroom)??? I haven't tweaked stuff too much but from what I read cable is supposed to look crappy compared to DVD, will investigate more tommorow.
