Late last year, I purchased a used Nakamichi RX-202 tape deck - the wierd auto reversing one that flips the tape. The deck really sounds great. I have some metal tapes that I recorded - 10 years ago from various CD's - like Jennifer Warnes 'Famous Blue Raincoat'. You really can't tell the difference between the CD and the tape.

I use a Denon DR-M44. well I did. Since getting my Akai Reel to Reel I dont do much on Cassette tapes. I also have a couple of Naks laying around here but man they are some finicky decks to keep running sometimes. I think my Fav is prolly the Pioneer CT-F1000. Kinda sorry I sold mine :(

mine's an UHER CG 332, it's headphone output is really good. It's got a selector for 'CrO2' 'Fe2O3' and... 'FeCr' which is highly uncommon as far as i know, I've only got one 'ferrum+chrom' tape, and it's an AGFA dub of Bruce Cockburn's 'Humans'

Main deck use is my PIONEER CT-F1250,second CT-F1000 and occasional use of a CT-F800 and a CT-S88R.
My RT-909 reel to reel gets much more use on a timer wakes me in the morning for work and plays until its time to head out the door and then shuts down by the timer.

Like everything else, I have a whole slew of 'em. Aiwa AD-S750, Dolby S deck is probably the 'best,' Teac V-770, Aiwa AD-R550, JVC DD-7, JVC something, CT-F8282 (still sounds fine!), Onkyo, and several Technics, two Yamahas, etc. Enough for 10 or 11 stereos, plus a couple left over is about all.

I'm running a Teac Z-6000 Mastering deck in the main system and an Onkyo Integra deck in the bedroom, though I am going to switch that around with the Aiwa AD-R40 autoreverse deck in the computer system. Gotta have auto reverse in the bedroom, can't have the music shutting off at an inoportune moment :D

Oldmarantz, how do you like the Z-5000. I lov ethe Z-6000 though I don't have the manual so I can't really set it up totaly right. Though I am not sure how much difference tweaking the buttons makes in playback as I don't record much anyway. The amazing thing is that it is heavier than many receivers, it's like a rock.:)

I remember your story about the TC-511S you resurrected :-)
All's I can say is that the one I had (bought used, ca. 1978) made great sounding tapes which still sound good. Plus, it (roughly) matches the cosmetics of my CA610II and CT610II.

Same here. Advent 201. I also have an Onkyo Integra TA-2056. I had a NAK 581, and LX-3, but I sold those. TEAC A-700 was nice too. I also had a big ass Sansui SC-5100 with wood case. A guy at work expressed an interest in it, but then started to have second thoughts. I put it on the floor and stood on it while it was playing. It never wavered, and he couldn't get his money out fast enough.
Hey Mr. Natural,
I managed to get ahold of the Wollensak that is the basis for the Advent 201. Almost identical except for two VU meters on the Wollensak, and the Dolby NR on the 201.

Hey, T/A-
Great score on that Wollensak! I almost bought one, originally, than I got wind of a deck coming out with Dolby NR and said, I shall wait for that one. Turns out the Advent was one sweet deal. What was it, $340 or so??? But I had always wished for TWO VU meters, never really trusted that 'higher of two' meter.
And to point out to others....NOTHING can rewind a cassette faster that that transport!!

I've got a Nakamichi 682ZX bolted into my rack with an outboard dbx 228 noise reduction/dynamic range expander. For years I used TDK tapes almost exclusively (anybody remember the old TDK MA-R metal tapes? they were HEAVY!)
Can anyone recommend a good Nakamichi authorized repair facility? I need to have the belts replaced along with a good tune-up/cleaning. And does anyone have an idea of what that would cost?

Here's a new spin I was pondering driving to sub sales yesterday: Why don't folks use Hi Fi stereo VCRs for audio use? The spinning head gives tremendous audio response and destroys the issues of 1 7/8 ips tape speed in cassettes. I picked up a boring Toshiba deck yesterday with a jammed tape for $2.00 and it specs 20-20,000 Hz and an 85 dB dynamic range, which I'm sure most cassette decks would be hard pressed to match. I've wondered about this for probably 15 years, ever since I bought my first Sony Hi Fi stereo vcr. Is it due to marketing and convenience (can't use vcr cassettes in cars, etc?) and sent this media the way of the technically superior Beta format??
FYI, my current deck is a Nakamichi Cassette Deck 2, which follows a Yamaha K-960 I used for 2 years which replaced an Akai GXC-725D 3 head deck I've had since 1978.

I used to put music on videotape, and it worked just fine. I think you answered your own question. You can't use it in the car. Plus, while I feel there was no difference between a cd, and a videotape copy of that cd WHEN PLAYED BACK ON THE EXACT SAME MACHINE IT WAS MADE ON. For some reason or another, there seemed to be too much variation regarding head alignment from one hi-fi vcr to another. Plus, most vcr's only allow you to "Pause" for 5 minutes before automatically going into the "Stop" mode. That's a pain in the ass editing-wise.
There was a hell of a capability there though. One T-160 blank videotape on Extended Long Play setting could yield 8 plus hours of uninterrupted music.

Howdy all,
I'm running an old TEAC A-450. purchased from Grumpys' garage. I love it. It may not be the fanciest looking thing, but it has 2 BIG vu meters, and an orange tape run light that spins around while the tape plays that's pretty cool.
Derek
The TEAC 450 was Teac's best deck in 1973 and was one of the best available, at least until late in 1973 when Nakamichi released the Model 1000. The 450 was one heck of a fine deck and is, IMHO, one of the finest looking machines ever!
In 1974 I purchased a TEAC A360, which was the same as the 450 except that the 360 was a conventional (for the time) slanted deck with all controls and meters topside. The 450 still loads topside but everything else is on the front.
I have two systems gojng - one in the living room and a vintage system in a bedroom.
In the main system is a Sony TC-K400S, Sony's current top-two head machine with Dolby S. Bought it NIB at a Good will for about $15. Looks and works great.
In the vintage system is a pair of Nakamichis. Primary is my trusty black-faced (custom) LX-3. Used mainly for dubbing is a beautiful CR-1a. The Cr-1a is a basic 2-head machine with Dolby B and C whereas the LX-3 is 1982 state-of-art including dual-capstan drive and Nak's famed pressure-pad lifter system.
The CR-1a works and sounds like your typical $200 tape deck. THe LX-3 is a beautiful example of how good a two-head cassette deck can be when done right. It's has better performance than most three-head decks.
The Sony is a fine performer but I don't think it is built as well as the LX-3 and doubt it will be around and still going strong when it's as old as the LX-3 is now.
NAKS RULE! Or at least the better ones do.
My Tape Decks include:
In the MAIN SYSTEM:
(4) Tascam 112b cassette
(1) ReVox PR-99 Mk III (2 Trk, 7.5 & 15 ips)
(1) Pioneer RT-909 (1/4 Trk, 3.75 & 7.5 ips)
(1) Pioneer RT-707 (1/4 Trk, 3.75 & 7.5 ips)
In the SECONDARY SYSTEM:
(1) Namamichi 480 (2 head)
(1) Aiwa F-990
(1) Sony TC-WE805S
(1) ReVox A-77 (1/4 Trk, 3.75 & 7.5 ips, w/ Dolby & Remote)
(no...never used the Dolby.... :) )
(1) Akai 1725 (7", 3.75 & 7.5 ips, tube)
(1) Akai X-300 (Portable 10.5", 1/4 Trk, 3.75 & 7.5 ips)
(1) Marantz 1820 Mk II
Bang & Olufsen 2200 (Complete stereo system)

I use an Ampex 351 and Tascam 32's for reel to reel recording, also use a Wollensak that is similar to the Advent pictured here for cassette. Have tried using Hi-Fi VCRS but had a problem, at least at the slowest speed, of the machine switching from HI-FI to standard linear playback, possibly because of irregularities in the tape. Also in the cheap VCR I tried, it was tough to maintain a consistent audio level.

I currently use a TEAC V-570, fairly nice. Before that, an Aiwa FX-70. For being an el-cheapo, the Aiwa actually makes decent tapes. My first cassette deck was a Pioneer CT-F2121, bought new when it was first released. This was my first ever store bought piece of audio gear. It'll eat every tape you give it. It now resides in its original box packed away in the garage attic.

a while back, i picked up a 'system' at the big SA here in dallas that included a pair of pioneer cs-99a's (the reason why i picked up the 'system') with perfect pioneer sx-626, a beaten but still fine functioning teac cd player, a technics linear track tt (couldn't throw that away fast enough) and a akai hx-1c cassette deck. it is silvery and way 80's looking with blinky lights instead of VU's...but i thought, Hmmm, and i popped in an old Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark prerecorded tape, and it played perfectly, shockingly perfect. so i went to Rat Shack and got some blank tapes, and it recorded perfectly, too....wow! what fun! i hadn't messed with rattly old tapes in years. so i started making mix tapes just like the old days, and i had to have another, so i got a perfect akai gxc-730d from eplay for 75 bux...wood case, perfect condition, big VU's, all lights and everything on the up and up...what fun! it's all so retro...

I have a Denon DR-M44 (rescued from the trash) as well as a HK TD-202 (bought new in 1988).
My favorite tape deck is a road weary Sony WMD-6c though I haven't used it much since high school. A friend had one he used as the tape deck for his car stereo and his band gear back in the early 80s. I heard it once and I realized I could not stand listening to the utterly crappy walkmans of the day. The ability to record was nice too. I think they should have made a docking station to hook it up to a home stereo. The 1/8" minijacks combined with a 5 LED VU meter really hobbled it.

I've got a few cassette decks lying around the place.
In my main system I run 2 x Teac 6030s 3-head decks that were bought new in 1997. I got them as my last cassette decks. I'm glad about that too as the cassette market on the whole has now since died pretty much.

The second system has a nice Sony TCK-661s 3-head deck. Again this was bought new by myself in 1996.
On the vintage front, I picked up an old Akai HX-1 along with the matching amp, tuner and speakers. Those do service in my bedroom for the moment until I can get my hands the Pioneer rig that I want.

I use a Sansui SC 3110 with the VU meters and patented manual loading system. It's a match to rest of my Sansui sytem. The thrift shops around Victoria are over loaded with cassette decks of various kinds. You cant give the things away. So it's great to know I'm not the only one still using them. I have a ton of music on casstte tape that needs to be transcibed to CD before the tapes eventually die.
There was a hell of a capability there though. One T-160 blank videotape on Extended Long Play setting could yield 8 plus hours of uninterrupted music.
I recorded at a studio that used a VCR to record the performances and the engineer there swore by it.

I sold my Nakamichi DRAGON many years ago, thinking that I'd lose interest in cassettes, only to later buy both a DR-2 and DR-1. I was a fool to part with the DRAGON, and almost bought this one on eBay several months back...due to my finances, it'll have to wait. If you ever get the chance to pick one up in great shape (and at the right price), go for it! It'll be the last cassette deck you'll ever buy!
My dad owned two Nakamichi 680ZX decks back in the late '70s...they were the cream of the crop in their day. Many in fine condition still command a high price tag on eBay and AudiogoN.

Yeah, I bet you regretted it! The DRAGON is just about the ultimate cassette deck.
I've had and sold lots of stuff that I later wish I hadn't. My most glaring examples are a Garrard 301 turntable and a Mac amplifier. Not to mention several Thorens and a Revox A77.
Gotta sell stuff so I can buy stuff. AAAARRRGGGGHHHHH!

I have to admit I've always liked the layout/styling/design of the 700 series better than the 1000 series (maybe with the exception of the ridiculously prices 1000zxl limited). Judging from the used prices relative to the original prices, I'd say most people that buy one of the two feel the same. And my previous comment about the 1000zxl being better that the Dragon if you record (especially from well-done live recordings as opposed to most commercial stuff) vs. mostly playback applies with the 700zxl paired on the 1000's side.-kby

Pioneer CT-F2121s from 1975. Picked 'em up of eBay.UK for the princeley sum of £10 for the pair. They are in excellent condition and are real beauties.
From what I can gather from Googling, they were the entry-level machines from 1975-77 and were around $200 in the US (dont know about the UK:dunno: )

Been a while since this thread was replied to, but here goes...
TASCAM 122 MKIII, "the industry standard" :tresbon: . I LOVE the big VU meters.
Sold an Akai GX-747 RTR a while ago, but don't really miss it.
Still have a Teac V-770 :boring: but the belt, which was professionally replaced 2 years ago, gave up the ghost about 6 months later (rotted) - after I moved 2,000 miles away. To add to it, the motor doesn't seem to want to cooperate with instructions any more. I'll work on it whenever I get the chance (the summer perhaps).
Whenever I listen to the TASCAM, it really brings me back. The metal tapes really held their own over the years, though I can't say the same for the normal bias tapes. I just love the deck!

Update time:
The Nak Cassette Deck 2 in my main system was replaced by a Denon DR-M3, which was later replaced by a Denon DR-M44HX which will probably be the keeper. There's also an Akai GXC-635D R2R in the system, and a old Sony SLV-760HF VHS deck. On the basement workbench, there's a Nakamichi BX-100, and a Nakamichi 481 out in the garage system; both which sound sweet with my decades old cassettes form the 70s :thmbsp:
I haven't done it yet, but I really should experiment with time shifting and taping FM to the Sony and editing down to the Akai R2R; could be interesting........:scratch2:
Just gotta find something on FM worth taping these days.......

JVC, Sony, Marantz, Nakamichi, Technics. Might have others, but those come to mind. (Was going to do a total component inventory yesterday until I realize I had spaced on a surprise bday party for a buddy.) None are hooked up, but I think I'll pop the Nakamichi on my bedroom system so I can listen to all of the cassettes that have been sitting fallow for about a year. Will probably keep the Nak and the Marantz and sell off the rest.

Might as well chime in here... I have two cassette decks, a Pioneer CT-F650 with the blue Fluorscan meters, and a Marantz SD-3030 from 1981 with yellow LED meters. With 3 decks, I am beginning to feel like I really belong on Ak. 2 portables, a Superscope CD-330 (70's), and a Marantz PMD-360 (80's) --essentially the same except for trim. And in the stack, a Technics RS-TR155 dual well (90's?) I got at a yard sale for $5.
I would like to find a great 3-head silver-faced cassette deck to replace the Technics, and a R2R, maybe a TEAC 3300, for the stack at a price I can afford. Oh yes, and another portable for parts to bring the two I have completely up to snuff. I have kind of become fascinated by tape.
Collected a few over the years:

Nakamichi 1000ll. I think I got it in 78 or 79 new. Got a great short term job over the summer and felt pretty rich at the time. Went crazy and bought the Nak. Have never been sorry. On my third belt as I remember. No trips to the shop. Aways did the maintainance thing, demag and clean. I wonder just how many cassettes have been through the poor thing! Home/portable units:
Currently have:
Sony TC-RX420 - used with the family room system. Purchased new in 1991. Needs RCA jack resoldering since the right channel sometimes cuts out. Also could probably have a demag job done as well as a good cleaning.
Sony TC-RX77ES - on my primary bedroom system. Works great, but rarely used. Purchased off eBait.
Sony WM-AF59 Walkman - purchased at the same time as the TC-RX420. Usually used for when we're using the treadmill.
Sony TCM-86V - purchased in 1993 for a history class.
Also have a Panasonic boom box (forget the model number on it) with dual cassette deck - works fine, thrift store purchase for $5.99+tax.
Previously owned:
Onkyo TA-2040 - originally purchased by my grandmother. Worked great for many years, then began to die in 1997. Replaced the belt, worked some more, then began slowing down in 2001. Retired in 2002.
Radio Snack Realistic SCT-72 - purchased as a birthday gift by my parents in '86 for my 11th birthday. Used it with a few receivers, including an old Harman/Kardon SC7 Nocturne music system with the old Dual 1009SK turntable. Sold in '96 at a moving sale to some friends who bought it, a Sharp receiver and a pair of JBL speakers...
Sony TC-RX79ES - Xmas gift in 1992 - kept eating capstan motors... Got rid of it in 2001. Purchased the 77ES to replace it in 2005.
Car units (all previously owned:
Blaupunkt Aspen tape deck - originally installed in our family's second Volvo wagon, eventually made its way into our '81 Honda when that car's second Panasonic tape deck gave up the ghost. Had weak drive problems when it was dropped into the Honda.
Blaupunkt Aspen SQR 24 - found at a Value Village for $14.99. Worked fine, but then the left channel got wonky after a while. Gave away with a Volvo sedan that I owned.
Kenwood KRC-878 - purchased from a classmate in 1993. Tape mechanism needed rebuilding - Had that done in 1995. Worked great for a couple more years, then began getting flaky again. Replaced first Blau in '81 Honda, then was installed in third Volvo wagon when the original deck in that car went south.
Kenwood KRC-1004 - temporary dash filler in third Volvo wagon, worked well.
Kenwood KRC-2005 - came with third Volvo wagon, lost FM band.
Kenwood KRC-2006 - purchased for use as a replacement for one of the cars - worked fine, sold or given away to someone else
Many Sony units graced our cars in the late '80s through 2002 - XR-6080, XR-6200, XR-6387, XR-2300, XR-5550, XR-130, and XR-C450...
Also had the usual factory Volvo/Clarion decks, Honda/Panasonic decks, and I think a Honda/Clarion deck.

We're using 4 decks now, plus an R2R...
Pioneer CT-F850
Pioneer CT-F950
Pioneer CT-F1250
Mitsubishi DT-40s
Tascam 32
These are all used in our recording studio down here in Mexico. They are fed through a dbx program router from a digital mixer and a standalone dbx Type II NR. The decks (except the Tascam) are used to record only vocals. Coupled with the dbx nr, they sound spectacular!
The DT-40s is currently down for repairs, along with the CT-F950 (cleaning and rebelting). The Mitsubishi's reel spindles cracked and are being custom manufactured as I type.
The Tascam 32 is used for some mixdowns using 456 tape.
Most other stuff is recorded using 2 Akai DR4 (-d and -vr), Tascam DA-78HR, Panasonic MDA-1 (ADAT), Panasonic SV-3700 (DAT), and of course, last but not least, with computer-based DAWs, etc.
The cassette decks are our workhorses for vocal tracks. They provide beautiful analog, soft compression, "velvet" sounding recordings. Awesome!
We use Sony Metal (type IV) tapes made in Italy. Gorgeous sound.

Late last year, I purchased a used Nakamichi RX-202 tape deck - the wierd auto reversing one that flips the tape. The deck really sounds great. These bad boys sold for $500 in 1974. Very easy to replace the belts. Eight screws and the bottom panel comes off. Two more screws and the flywheel comes off. Easy!!. Tape counter forget it. Hard to get at and I left well enough alone.
Take a look at the motor on this deck. Its an induction motor like a turntable. No brushes. Keep it cleaned and oiled and this bad boy will run for years. Great sound too! A keeper. Have mine in the shop system. No room in the livingroom cabinet:tears: I like old Ford P/U's. Got a nice 1996 with a cassette deck. Original and its stays. Cassettes are easier than CDs. Hit record and go. My Sony CDR has to "think about it" Danmed copy guard. Cassettes sound better than a CD anyway.
Enjoy. Could afford it in 1974 but got mine in 2003. A keeper. :tresbon:

I use a Pioneer CT-F950, but on the wish for and never get list are:
Nakamichi CR-7
Pioneer CT-93
Aiwa XK-S9000
The Aiwa is a nice deck. This is one I have. I haven't been able to get it aligned to be put into standard service yet, so I cannot comment on its sound. But through headphones on testing it, it seems good. I'd like to hear the Nak Dragon, ZX-9, or the CR-7A/E to listen to what all the hype is about. If I didn't have so many decks already, I would have bought one (CR-7A/E). Problem about Naks are they don't have HX-Pro or Dolby S, which is important in my book. But maybe they don't need them.
Here are some pics of the 4 main decks I have. They all need a good cleaning. The top one is my Sony TC-K909ES. The second (and best deck I have) is the Aiwa XK-S9000. Third is the Luxman K-112. Fourth is my portable ghetto blaster JVC PC-55 one that has been detached and is running by itself for location recording. The remaining part of the ghetto blaster is stored away. I also have an Aiwa walkman and Radio Shack portable cassette player/recorder which was for computer use, and finally my Pioneer car deck. For fun I included the Pioneer CT93 deck I found on Ebay a year ago, but do not own myself. That too is a nice deck and you should see the inside of it to appreciate the design that went into it.

The Aiwa XK-S9000 was Aiwa's all out effort to compete with the Nakamichi Dragon, CR-7, and ZX-9. It used mostly Sony parts and is a beautiful and rare machine.

I'd believe it especially after looking at the specs as well as the deck itself. I just wish I could figure out how to adjust the azimuth on mine (see other post). Turning the nuts doesnt seem to be doing anything. Its at the point I now have to take it in to get it running again (belts need changing too).
As per Naks- I'd look for a used CR-7A/E if I needed one. It seems to better the Dragon from what some say. Not familar with the ZX-9, though it seems to be earlier then the CR-7A and possibly even the Dragon. As per the CR-7- what is the difference between the A model and E model? By that I mean CR-7A or CR-7E. I also wonder why Nak was not one to impliment HX-Pro or Dolby S.

Has Dolby S and love the way that this unit sounds. Bought new in around '94-'95 ish from the SONY store on clearance for about $400 CAD. been using it since and love the sound. Have many others, but none matches the Dolby S NR that this deck uses. Dolby S rocks, too bad it came so late in the game fo cassette. I have a sony Super Metal Master cassette that I used a CD source and my 707 with Dolby S and love the way that it sounds. It seems to take away the digital harshness.
I also have:
TC-K611S (non es brother to the 707ES - doesn't hold a candle)
TC-K730ES (doesn't have Dolby S, but better built than the 707ES)
Akai GX-F91 (cool doors, motorized panels, needs work)
Akai GX-R88 (3 head auto rev)

I had the 707ES before I took it back for the 909ES. The 707 was a good deck, but I had issues with it chewing tapes from new and a couple other problems. The 909 I got to replace it has been mostly trouble free other then the balance control now not passing sound.
I also agree Dolby S is great to use!

I use a Yamaha KX-W900. Some of you may know that it is actually 2 seperate decks in one housing. Each deck has it's own in & outputs. You can record a source on one and listen to a different tape on the other. It is the RS series which is fully remote controlled and can even be programmed to play the music on the tape (songs) in any order you want. The deck will also function as relay or high speed dub. I bought this deck about ...geezzz about 1990-91?? Still plays perfect. Before this I had a CTF1250.

My main deck is the Yamaha K-1020...sounds very nice to my tin ears. Secondary is the Denon DR-M44HX..another great sounding deck...but it has record problems in the left channel. It's OK in playback, so that's what I use it for....until I can get it fixed.
My first real cassette deck was a Dual C-939. The sales stall couldn't figure how to stop it's auto reverse on two units, so I returned it for a CT-F1000, the best deck that I ever had.

A keeper. :tresbon:

I replaced the belts and it works fine! Thanks for the tip. I managed to replace the tape counter belt by taking the front of the machine off. I guess I will be holding on to this one...

I saw some mighty good machines in there...
I have a Sony TC-K890ES that I bought new at the times(80's) and I love it because it is so quiet and makes beautiful recordings:tresbon: the bias is adjustable and the sound is the same as the source when I record with it... it also has a linear counter that I like a lot  :music: I also have a Harman Kardon CD91 that I use sometimes for some mixing or what not.

Hi VH
as I said I bought this big TEAC Z5000 new in 1986 (it was very expensive at that time) and it s still a great cassette deck today.has got internal Dbx and linear tape counter it was rare. I don t use it but In fact I never used it very much!!!.the teac is built like a tank and it s true very heavy for a cassette deck(22 lbs).If you want I can make copy of the User Manual and send it to you by Email... tell me if you re ok gimme your adress;)
Dom.
Would you still be able to send me a copy of the user manual for the Teac Z-5000. I have a non-working one at the moment, but hopefully I'll get it repaired soon. I ordered a drive belt for it so as soon as that gets here I'll install it and then try to figure out why there's no output. If you could send that to me I would really appreciate it. I guess it's time to come out of the closet on this one. I have too many cassette decks to even remember them all. It's one of my "closet weaknesses" that has more than filled up a closet.
Among the notable ones are:
Nakamichi ZX-7
Nakamichi 700
I had three or four other smaller Naks, including a 480, but I think I sold them all. Might still be one left in storage (a BX-300?).
Tascam 122 MK II
Two other Tascams: One is something like a 121 or 112, and the other (133?) records on three tracks: the third track, not picked up on a normal player, is used to record "cues" for operating automatic controls on things like slide projectors. I bought one of these, sold it, then bought another which I still have.
Akai GX-95 (Stilll looking for the MK II of this one)
Akai GX-75 Mk II
Four different models of the old horizontal/top loading Akais (I could have had several more, including one free from the trash, that I passed up on ... that was difficult! :tears: ).
Teac Z-7000
Teac Z-6000
Teac Z-5000
Marantz 5020 (two or three of these)
Marantz 5025 (I think that's the number! Or maybe 5250)
Marantz Esotec SD-4000
Marantz SD-5025
Marantz.... three or four others that I can't remember the numbers of.
Technics - two vintage silver-fronts that have a clear door that slides horixontally across (don't remember the number). Cool-looking with meters and an angled tape carrier that you see via an angled mirror!
Denon - I don't remember the number (champagne-gold front, horizontal loading tray, wood sides). Just the one Denon, and the only one on this list that I bought new (about 16 years ago) but I've been eyeing a regular front-loader in two-tone (silver and gold) lately. In fact, two of them.
Sansui 1330 (two of these, one silver and one black)
Sansui 1130
[I won't bother listing the ones in combination units like the Marantz 4025 or the novelty portables or the big ghetto blasters like the Sharp GF's I've been "trading in" lately.]
With some pain and regret, I have passed up literally more than a hundred (probably several hundred) vintage cassette decks, including some semi-iimpressive ones, ones with metal capability and Dolby C/High-Extension...within the past week, I saw a large (rack-mounts) vintage Sony and a nice JVC that I sort of drooled over, but unless I want to get divorced  on the way to bankruptcy, I have to draw lines somewhere, and cassette decks seem a good place to start. Just don't have the space for getting them all, or I would long ago have opened "the big cassette museum"!
Instead, I'll probably eventually be selling off all but one or two (or three or four...:D ) carefully-chosen favorites. I know that gradually, eventually, I am moving towards a "fewer but better" approach to audio collecting.
If the prices of regular vintage Marantz decks keep up what appears to be an upward trend, though, I might pick up several more of those just for resale, since they remain relatively cheap here in Hong Kong.

My best cassette deck (and first 'real' one): Teac 410.
It lasted me for 20 years, including some all-night sound editing sessions for friends' birthday tapes.
When it finally died, I got its pro 'soul brother', the Tascam 112 Mark 2, on Ebay for $75 in perfect shape (just 2 heads, but I only need it for transfering old tapes.)
Reel-to-reel: Studer 807 1/4-inch 2-track (I am a home musician/recordist as well.)
And awaiting delivery of a Teac X1000R 4-tracker for the living-room system....there's nothing like reels :thmbsp:
Best,

... seems we could start a 122mkII fanclub here :-)
I own the following K7 decks:
Tascam 122mkII (ha!)
Sony TC-FX1010
Sony pre-Esprit TC-K88B (near new)
Sony MTL-10 (nos in box)
Denon DR-M4 (bought new then... almsot dead as a doornail now)
Akai GXC-325D (near new)
Whenever I want to listen to my old tapes (which is fairly rare) I use the TC-K88B.
RtR:
Teac X-1000RW (near new)
Tascam 34B (nos)
Telefunken 3000HiFi
...but I don't use RtR anymore as I switched to DAT a long time ago:
Sony DTC-2000ES
Technics SV-DA10
Technics SV-E10.
(I've had quite a few others but these three will stay).

Hello all;
I think I got more decks then I need
here starts the list.
1) Nakamichi 1000 ZXL (I dont think it needs any comments at all)
2) Nakamicih ZX-9, very fine deck with excellent recording capability, needs regular service
3) Sony TC-K8ES, interesting vu meters, fine sound,
4) Sony TC-K777ES, needs restoration at the moment
5) Grundig Ct-400, excellent performance for a 2 head, gears are too vulnarable..
6) Aurex 15 series deck , not the best performer
7) Technics M-02 (?) , excellent performer for a 2 had deck
8) Revox B710 Mk II , excellet performance, excellent durability, ultra easy to service
9) Luxman K-03, one of the best casette decks ever made, on par with any Nak
10) Alpine AL-90 , excellent performer, very interesting specs
11) Hitachi D-5500, one of the sexiest deck tape ever made, makes CTF 1250 look like feminen
12) Sony TC-D5, excellent portable , a must have
13) WM-6D, a pro class walkman
14) Some Aiwa decks, sound veriy fine
15) One very rare Akai deck , from mini 5 series, dont sound very good now
16) B&O, can remember the model, not the best performer
17) Sony TC-880, the best RtR ever been build, by a big margin
18) Sony TC-510 , one the sexiest portable RtR's ever built,
19) Usal Revox'es A77, B77
20) There are more but I am over :)
I bought most of'em for less then 10 $'s.
I can tell that some of the finest decks can easly outperform most of the CD player's without much effort. (ie 1000ZXL, ZX-9, Luxman K-03, Alpine, )
Sony TC-880 can out perform anything without much effort at all...
Besides it's a pleasure to see them in action..

I still have two Pioneer CT-F1250's that will be either parted out or sold on ebay, a Technics RS-B100 that needs a new tire(plays but squeels), a Kenwood 1060, an Aiwa M700H three head that is mint but needs belts, and a Nak Dragon and CR-7A, the Dragon is to be sold to my bud to help pay for the CR's gear drive and EQ upgrade plus new belts, it's an early deck that was put away years ago and is mint with working remote.
I kept the CR because my eyesight is getting worse every year and the CR is all auto to record, the Dragon sounds beautiful but I have to set it up for each type of tape used, I have over 400 blank unopened type 2 and metal tapes of different manufacture and all those buttons on the Dragon are intimidating when you can't find your glasses.
Remember, your children are NEVER going to listen to most of the music you leave behind so you might as well archive it on whatever media you like, I like the sound of tape.:music:

Hi, just found this forum, and I love it!
My tape deck is a reel to reel Pioneer RT 2022 - TAU 11 Amp and RTU 11 Open tape transport. Both are front rack mount models, and bought brand new.
They still work great, but I'm having problems finding the aluminum 10" reels loaded with a decent tape for this model.
If anyone has a link for finding/buying the aluminum reels, preloaded, please let me know!

I am running a Pioneer CTF 9191 and a CTF 1000. Both superb decks but the 1000 is superior overall. Not doing much recording other than the occasional transfer from vinyl on my better sounding records. Visits to my local record shop are a whole lot more fun these days though b/c I am picking up factory made pre-recorded music on cassette at a dollar a pop! Not one tape has malfunctioned or dropped out on me. Tape is totally underrated these days!

I own both the TC800D and the GL model, I bought the TC800GL new in 1976 ish .... and the deck was "in a class of its own" for it's time. YOU BETCHA! Very very nice deck.
Unfortunately my GL has seen the hands of a less than respectable shop and is now a basket case, my D is operational but just sits...
I will say that my GL was a FINE sounding deck, and had a super fast fast transport,(yea thats double fast) my current Naks are no match for the speed of the transport.
Bellini won many awards for this deck and these Yammies still have a cult following today.
One thing that I really enjoyed was that the case/cabinets were made of a funny material that was kind of suede like plastic (if that makes any sense) absolutely revolutionary for the day.
Be careful with the case, as she scratches and becomes marked easily.
Absolutely wonderful to see these decks coming back to life- lots of good memories from a time gone by! Hell mine garnered many WOW's in the day.....

Tandberg TCD-310 is part of my "Half-Ass HT Rig". I love this machine. I think it's the best cassette deck ever made. When it was a current product in the mid 70's, I was an audio salesman and couldn't afford one of these even with the company discount. Love this damn machine. I have a spare as well.
Sony TC-K850ES is part of my main rig, the "He-Man Rig". This is another beautiful machine, probably more accurate than the Tandberg, but doesn't have nearly the gut impact when you touch it.
I have some kind of nice Technics machine in my garage rig, cause I don't want to put any of the others on the list below out in the garage. I have a Teac V-400x on my desk at work. There is something real cool about cassette decks, I don't know what it is.

And the case paint is easily scratched. t-r-m picked up a beauty.

Technics RS 641,
Cheers!!!
My Nak CR1A went belly up so it has been replaced with a pristine Marantz SD4000. Still using the Sony TC-KE400S in my other system.
Kinda bums me out that all three of my Naks - CR1a, LX3, and B300 have died in the past year! All transport logic problems, too. All fixable but at too high a price. Ouch!
Gee, my Teac R2R (A2300) lasted me some 20 years and the current owner is still using it, with zero repairs, seven years after I sold it to him.

Just picked up a TOTL Sony dubbing deck, the TC-WR11ES, as part of a package deal.
Played some pre-recorded tapes and they sounded rather good. Made a nice tape of a couple of Putumayo CDs for my wife since she has a cassette deck in her car. She claims to have no interest in ripped tapes so I'll be looking for a good home for it.

Tascam 234 Syncaset
Open reel:
Teac X-2000 black
Teac A-3300S-2T 15ips half track, in repair
Teac X-3
Sony TC-755
I used to have more cassette/R2R, but once I found the mint CR-7 and X-2000 I've scaled back my search for tape decks. I wouldn't mind an Akai GX-747, to have a TOTL GX-head deck. A B77 would be nice too, I had the chance for one but I think the seller took a higher offer than his asking price.

I have a Nakamichi LX-3 and a JVC TD-V541 Three Head Cassette deck currently hooked up. I have a fairly high end Teac in storage. It's auto reverse with a servo controlled fader and digital counter but I cannot remember the model. I do know it is circa 1981. I used to have some nice Onkyos, but I gave them to friends who want them to convert cassettes to CD.

I'm down to one cassette machine these days as the Technics which was my 2nd developed "irreplaceable gear" syndrome in the drive. My one and only is a Teac C-3RX. Three heads, virtually identical to one of the Tascam pro decks, but with the addition of Dolby B and DBX. Does an amazing job. My RTR's do get more work lately, though (various Revoxes).

Teac R-919X. Bi-Directional Auto Reverse Record/Playback~Double Acculign Rotating 3 Head System(head assembly spins around to play in reverse). This deck was made for dubbing from CD. Full Bias/Level control, CD level check,MPX filter,B-C and dbx noise reduction. Dual capstan drive and just 1 belt(head rotation) to replace about every 10 years so far. Blank scan, intro check, remote, timer start, block repeat, phone output with level control. TOTL for auto reverse Teac in early 90s. It still gets used a lot. Good source delivers good playback. :thmbsp: :music:

The only tape deck I own is a Sony TC-WR665S (probably non-ES TOTL) that has every imaginable feature for a Tape Deck. Dolby B, C, S, and dbX. Automatic Music Selector. Auto Reverse. 2 motor transport. Auto Bias Calibration. Automatic tape selector. You get the idea.
The only caveat is that it doesn't turn on. Oh well.

Okay, here is what I have so far for cassettes:
Marantz 5220 with a nice wood cabinet – Works, looks, and sounds great
Marantz 5020 - Works, looks, and sounds great, but it is a spare and will probably go on the bay.
Pioneer CT-F950 with wood cabinet – No problems and temporarily in my main system until I get the CT-F1000 going.
Pioneer CT-F950 – Needs belts. Have the belts + idler tire kit from WJOE RADIO (http://www.wjoe.com/vintageandantiques.htm) so it is in the queue for service. It is another spare so it may go on the bay later.
Pioneer CT-F1000 – Needs belts. Have the belts, idler tires, + Rubber Pulley kit from WJOE RADIO and it is high in the queue for service. Then it goes back into my main system.
For Reel to Reel
Teac Tascam 22-4 – Four channel pro deck for stereo and backing up my Quad LP’s. Just got it and it is mint. Was serviced by Teac about 2 years ago.

Nice deck! I bought my RS-616 new back in '78 and still have it to this day! But I noticed my deck resembles the unit posted on the Vintage Technics site and not your actual deck...my deck doesn't have the extra Timer Standby key like yours, nor does it have the SP Head (mine has the LH Head shown on the cassette door). I'm guessing since the logo "Technics, by Panasonic" is silkscreened on my faceplate, whereas your deck has just "Technics" printed on it, that mine is maybe an American model and yours is a European model exported from Japan. Either that, or there were changes made from my '78 model to your '79 model, I dunno.:scratch2:

Picked up an RS-616 in pretty good condition. Similar to the previous posts. It's dubbin time!
For an entry-level deck, the 616 was pretty awesome. I made many FM broadcast recordings with that deck as a teenager...unfortunantly, the cassettes got trashed during a move while I was stationed overseas in '83 (guess my folks didn't think I'd want them anymore, and I obviously wasn't there to make sure they'd get packed up). Oh well...
The deck is still in its original carton packed away out in the garage, but my kid brother claimed it crapped out on him back in the early '80s so it hasn't seen the light of day for over 20 years now. Maybe I should dig it out sometime and have a look at it.
Since it won't ever replace my current Nakamichi DR-1, I just haven't been in a rush to mess with it...

Wollensak T1515-4 (all metal, and sounds good)
Wollensak made some very good decks...I've only had the reel to reels, but they were quality construction with a nice sound. Don't come up all that often.
I also have had a couple of Henry Kloss's Advent 201's, which are superb stereo decks, even though they look quirky with their single VU meter!

Just one - Pioneer CT-F1000
Cleaned, new belts and pulley installed, new test tape just arrived, waiting on new pinch rollers for more fine tuning.
Sits nicely atop the SG-9500. And yes, the SG needs a new lamp. Seems there's always something to do with these.
Enjoyable focus for an obsession.

My Wollensak can sit for months and when I turn it on, it's ready to go once the tubes warm a little. It still has the original belts, I sprayed some V-Belt dressing (Automotive stuff) and there as good as new. I had to do this to my Sony TC-560 and it is rewinding again, these decks (TC-560) seem to have problems with rewinding after all these years. I sprayed the belts about a year ago and it's still playing fine. Stuff really works, stiffens the rubber and adds some traction to the pulleys.

Bought new:
1. Onkyo TA-RW99 dual deck (nice little work horse)
2. Onkyo TA-2090 (last year tested after storage and did not FF, RW, REC, or Play)
3. TEAC V900X (from eBay) damaged during shipping. Does not FF, RW, REC, or Play. Was hoping to take the place of the TA2090 so I could archive tapes to CD.
4. Harman Kardon TD4600 (from eBay) Gorgeous sound but bias trim and recalibration doesn't work.
5. Yamaha K-1020 got yesterday (2/10/08) from craigslist Free because it did not FF, RW, REC, or Play when seller tested. Said I could have free if I wanted because he didn't want to just throw it out. But I got it working spraying Deox Faderlube inside and out. Used cleaning solution to scrub crud from rubber rollers. Now fully functional and sounds gorgeous.
So with the Yamaha success, I tried and restored my TA-2090 by using the same aggressive cleaning for the K-1020. Now fully functional and beautiful.
Next up will try to restore the TEAC V-900X which has the same previous symptoms of the Yamaha and Onkyo: FF, RW, REC, Play stops after a few seconds. I always suspected it didn't work even before the damage during shipping. It was thinly packaged with a loose sheet of bubble wrap on the bottom like it was hoping to get damaged as an excuse not to work. Seller also never answered the question if it Rec, FF, RW, and Played - this was when I was still new and excited to eBay instead of wiser and cynical.
My first audio cassette deck was a TEAC A-450 which I gave away. Miss those VU meters.

Well the question is "What tape decks do you own?" It's only in the body that we get sucked into cassette land. Oh well, I have both, R2R=> RT901, Cassette starts off with the CTF900, BIC T-3, Some Sonys TK77R (both mine and my sons), 2 Nakamichi 480's, a Denon DRM840 (the all time strongest transport in the fleet - It'll pull a 30 year old squeaking Memorex 120 without a hitch!), a JVC TD541, an Onkyo 2026, a NAD 613, and a ROTEL 1010 (that's up on eBay right now - too many, need to thin the herd!).

terra1 : I can't believe you got a free K-1020!!! I've been looking for a working black one forever!!! I have 2 K-960, one silver, one black, and the dbx tapes (some from over 25 years ago) sound like new, and I am dying to try out a 3 heat with Dolby C and dbx. I suspect I may find that a K-1020 in dbx may best my 2 Nak RX-505's in Dolby C for perfect dubs. The upper K series were built like brickhouses, and the weak links in the 2 head units are the belt driven capstan ( noisy motor) and idler tyre design (noisy and tough to fix), both which were fixed inthe 1020 with DD and separate FF & Rew motors. I also have 2 "junkers" a Teac R666 and a Technics, just for site playing tapes.
