During lunch yesterday, decided to stop at the SA and found an unpriced H/K PM660 80W amp. Manager said I could have it for $10. My belief is where there is smoke there is fire so while on a lumber yard run I popped back in today. The clerk was just starting to bring out speakers. First came a Curtis-Mathes(!) marked $20 then a Qa with no price the other C-M marked $20 and then the other Qa. Talked up the clerk and asked if the prices were each or pair. He took a look and said, "well if I mark them (Qa's) at $10 each would that be okay with you?" Done! I thought for sure his supervisor was going to come over and put a kibosh on things. Nope, out the door they went. The caps have a little dent, one more than the other, and there is some corrosion on the tweeter plates. The cabs are in good shape. Haven't had the time to check them for sound. I haven't even put my HPM-100's into the mix yet and I picked up a pair of $9.99 Ohm "E"s last wek that need a spot. Yeah I know-I'll get the pics out tomorrow.

Thanks for the link. I did a quick read of OMI's recent thread regarding his Qa's. The emits look okay but I'll know later. I'm ready to call it quits on speakers and I'm almost at the limit of funds allotted for this hobby. Not that am in want of anything else. Saw some $40 Mach 2's a couple weeks that I thought someone was looking for but I don't think I received a response.

Shoot, Homer, can't remember where I left the message for you. I got a weird e-mail as a response but it had a questionable attachment and whoever never replied. Anyway, I'm on the West coast so I don't know if it would be feasible to ship the speakers-but I can check to see if I still have the source.

Nice haul... I have not had time to dig into mine. Did hook 'em up and the woofers sounded fine.... I know there is an issue with the tweets. I may have a look this weekend... At least you did not have someone going NAG...NAG...NAG... when you took 'em out of your car and end up dropping one on its courner:)

Since I wrestled the HPMs into a temporary locale decided to do the same with the Qa's. Meter tested them and then hooked 'em up to my Sui 5000A FM sounded great so I took them in and put 'em on the SX1250. Holeee crap :eek:!!! These things are awesome when I throw some power at 'em. I read that they're a bit power hungry but what they do with that power is nothing short of awesome. For 10" 2-ways they have some punchy bass and the vocals are fantastic. A/B'd 'em with the L-112's and they didn't back off. Would like to A+B but not into killing receivers :nono:. They definitely have a place in my main system :thmbsp:. My second best thrift find as they're pumping perfectly. Here's a lousy pic:

You know the amazing thing? These were Infinity's budget speakers. Just imagine the sound some of us enjoy with the bigguns.

I'm definitely interested to hear your opinion of the Qas compared to the JBLs.

Well, it's damn hard to shut things down and it's been up, down, up, down hitting the A/B. My first impressions at some crankin' volume is that there is no reason for the Qa to be afraid of the L-112! More bass (gee, I wonder why) from the JBL. But, the highs are another thing. The Qa's seem a little taller without the brightness that can come from the JBL. The highs are crisp. In all fairness the way the speakers are sited is less than optimal. And, I fiddled with the JBLs when I hooked up the HPMs. The Qa's seem to "loosened" up some and are just cruising along. Given the price and where I bought them I am impressed. If they went with the amp I bought I would sure like to find the rest of the system. :thmbsp: Gotta hook up the amp. Anyway, more to come after I spend a little more time and effort.
Hey OMI it's only stuff and I have yet to post my last debacle :thumbsdn:.

The Qa was my first refoam job before I heard of using a 30 - 40 Hz tone to center the voice coils, so I carefilly used the back edge of an Xacto #11 knife to scrape away the old glue around the dust caps until they came loose and I could get shims in place. Then I glued them back, and as has been noted, very nice speakers.

Man, where do you find these thrift stores?!?!?! I found a Mac 2100 at a thrift store for $25 one time, but rarely find anything that cheap. The Qa is a fantastic speaker. I really love Infinity's old "budget" line with the early Emit. That woofer is also a great one, so lively, and you still (in my opinion) cant beat paper cones. I had the Qb for a long time, with a midrange (I may be wrong on the model), and liked those a little more. But, great finds man, I must admit Im envious!

This is some "budget" speaker as it has a truly amazing sound, and IMHO it handles the highs a bit better than the HPM-100's they're sitting on. I really need to rearrange the listening area as I have two stacks of three speakers awaiting a decision plus the option of two sources. This should make Rob happy, I have a feeling that the Qa's may go better with my Yammie CR-1020 than the SX1250  again IMHO. This new switchbox is going to make choices more difficult not easier. I think you're right tyhat the Qb has a mid.
I really haven't hit alot at the thrifts just been lucky. Two near the house and one by work-all within 5 mi-so a quick stop at lunch or out on errands is not too difficult. Same as other sales just dumb luck. Plus strategy-if there's an amp should be some speakers, etc.. In fact, since I joined AK and increased my knowledge my costs of the big boys actually went down from a $65 Onkyo TX-8500 to a $10 Sansui 9090DB with several in between. Did even better with speakers.
