Just got a nice cheap Dual 1229 yesterday. Being new to the realm of Dualdom but having read up on my loyal subject, I realize there are some things on a Dual that are not to be messed with. Hopefully the problem I have won't take any messing. The speed switch is stuck, and when the platter spins, I hear something dragging inside. Do these problems sound easily curable with a lube job and that $25 kit with all the different oils? If not, what other options do I have that won't cost me $200 (even if it is worth that much - I'm cheap and poor)?

PS: The cartridge is a Shure V15 type III. Looks like only generic replacements are available for it - get one, or pop for a new cartridge?

For that dragging sound, pull off the platter and check to see if there is a paper strobe pattern disk on the bottom side - the glue may have deteriorated and it may be loose. Easy fix. Don't know what to do about the speed switch - try fiddling with it after you check the underside of the platter.

Check out the prices that those Shure V15 III carts are going for on ebay. It's the best match for that TT, you should either keep it or send it to a nice guy named sputnik.

ps: The replacement cart from Shure is the m97xe - I've heard that it's not as good as the v15 III on the old TTs.

If you don't mind shipping it, send to AK member NoTransistors. He has gone through a 1218 for me and did an excellent job at a most acceptable cost. He is one of our primary Dual guru's. :thmbsp: Suggest you contact him.

yup, the dragging is the strobe disk. I had the same problem. And I may send my tt to one of the shops you recommend.

Many consider the 1229 the very best Dual made of all. I envy you, Colortrakker. Nice catch.

"I am sure you know by now I am an amateur tinkerer, not a repair person."

A Dual 1229 that needs repair is not a project for an amateur. There are many steps that need to be taken that haven't even been touched upon in this thread.

Reason # 1: All Duals of this age require service to work properly (like any mechanical piece of equipment). It can be repaired correctly by someone knowledgeable in these, but also ruined forever by someone who is unfamiliar with them.

Reason # 2: This is a machine worthy of respect - show it the respect that it deserves & get if fixed right - it will be spinning for another 30 years.
