View Full Version : Did JVC ever make a good TT???
gamalot 01-29-2006, 02:07 PM Have a friend who has what he claims is a very good TT made by JVC.
I looked breifly at it last night, think it is a QL-7 and it also has something like T77 servo on or near the platter.
It does seem to be a substantial TT but I have no clue if JVC ever made any decent TTs worth keeping around.
Needs a new cartridge and good cleaning and adjusting but the dust cover is gone.
Any info out here about this unit. Don't care what it might be worth, just if it is worth spending any time or money getting it playing.
Thanks.
Gary
hifi_nut 01-29-2006, 02:34 PM JVC made some more than decent TTīs.
That QL-7 is no slouch itself.
A few other good ones:
QL-Y 66 f
QL-A95
QL-10

mhardy6647 01-29-2006, 02:37 PM Yes they did... I had a friend in grad school who saw the light, gave his little Technics SL-D2 or whatever to his brother and bought a QL-5 or QL-7 with a SME arm and (IIRC) a Grado G1. Beautiful black laquer, DD tt... sort of like the big Denon's of the era. Not a toy.
gamalot 01-29-2006, 03:15 PM Thanks Mr Hardy and HIFI Nut.
As I said, It appears to be a substantil unit but we all know looks can be deceiving.
I have never been particularly fond of JVC since owning a large Quad receiver back in the mid 70s 5454 or 5456, something close to this.
I will do some tweeking with it and see if I can get it looking and working properly.
Are there any specialty places where I might locate a dust cover for this unit?
Also any hints/tips in the adjustments that might help me?
Is there a particular cartridge that tends to work well on this or other JVC TTs of the era?
I did not see a name on the TA but must admit, it was a party and adult beverages were in play when the discussion came up.
I would like to help him as he does have quite a nice LP collection he has not heard in many moons.
Thanks
Gary
hifi_nut 01-29-2006, 03:49 PM Hi Gary
You can download here, and for free, the Userīs Manual, as well as service manual and schematics for the QL-7A, which I believe is very similar to the QL-7

Hope this helps
Gary,
do check this: http://www.thevintageknob.org/THEVAULT/TT801/TT801.html
JVC = (of) Japan Victor Company = Victor Company of Japan = Victor
mhardy6647 01-29-2006, 05:37 PM ...also, at one time, known as Nivico and (in the US, very early on) as Delmonico. The sizzle, not the steak.

Just to let you know friends. If you find any of my pics worth showing you have my permission. Not that I have any good ones anyway. :D
domino4001 03-08-2006, 08:33 AM There is a JVC TT on eBay that is a local pick up for me...I've never heard of this particular model, but it might suit me just fine...

If anyone has any opinion on this one, please respond.
J. H. 03-08-2006, 09:18 AM Yes, JVC made some very nice TT's. I still have my JLB-31 I got in '77. Still spinnin strong, sounds like the day one, and not a scratch on it. It wasn't their top of the line, but built like a tank. I've never had to have anything done to it just kept it cleaned/polished. Been thru 3 kids, & many moves. If you can find one, buy it.
Added pic of a jl-b31. Mine is the darker case.

I like that talbe.
Thanks HW. As I said, it's been a great table. Still use it regularly :music: ,(I got about 200 albums), and it sounds as good today as it did in '77.
Dire McCain 03-08-2006, 04:20 PM Got my Y66L at the thrift for $35...I am a pioneer freak at heart but this turntable seems to be a very nice unit...I would also like recommendations on cartridge/stylu choices for optimizing this TT...
Thanks...

Dire,
I use a Stanton 500 ALII. IT's been a good cartridge. Might want to take a look.
Absolutely! Their tables are generally as well made and perform on a par with their competition. A few of their tables have been very good, indeed.
