Just received my new-to-me GX-747. I got kinda burned in an eBay transaction gone wrong, but for once I won't try to burden AK with my bad luck... Instead, as I try to determine how much doesn't work on this pricey deck, I realize I don't know for sure how the auto reverse is supposed to be set up.

Searches here and around the web show different schemes for different manufaturers. This is my first autoreverse deck, so first question is how do I use this nice new roll of sensing foil? Does this Akai like a long strip of foil or a short one? Is it placed on the head side or the shiny side of the tape? What does the sensor look like in case it needs extra cleaning attention? Or does this deck use clear tape instead of foil?

I've ordered the manual for the machine but it won't be here for a couple of weeks... can one of the informed give me an idea of how to get started on autoreverse?

thanks!

One Cycle

attach a 2.5cm to 4cm length of standard accessory sensingtape to the non-recording surface of the tape at a point where the direction is to be reversed. When the sensingtape comes in contact with the Left Tension arm which also acts as the sensing pole, the direction of tape travel will automatically reverse.

Continuous Playback

attach 2 pieces of 2.5cm to 4cm in length to the non-recording surface of the tape at 2 points: 2 points at which playback is to be repeated, When the sensingtape comes in contact with the Left or Right Tension arm, the direction of tape travel will automatically change.

Works like a charm. I had just been using too long a piece of foil... Thanks again!

Have had my GX-747 since new in '83. Great deck. You should get a lot of enjoyment from it. Congrats.
