On my boss' recommendation, I picked up a case of a new to me Shiraz yesterday, and IMHO it is excellent. It is only sold through Costco, and is their house brand - Kirkland Signature. It is a Shiraz from the Barossa Valley. The case I bought was a 2003 vintage. It sells for about $9/bottle, and is worth every penny. It is very dark, full bodied, and just bursting with flavor.

If you have access to Costco, I recommend giving it a try.

Don't know if I can get that here in PA, but thanks for the tip - I've had a couple other Barossa Valley wines lately, and they were pretty good.

Rich - let me know if you can't get it. Perhaps I can ship you a bottle.

Jeff,
Just returned to this thread to get the name, as I'll be heading to the liquor store to stock up today. Thanks for the kind offer, I'll let you know if I can find it.

Thought I'd chime in here, since I spent most of my post-academic career in the import wine business. While it ain't two-buck Chuck, the best bargain in Shiraz currently on the market is (gasp) Spanish. Jean Leon (Catalan) has a super Syrah/Carignane blend (true Rhone style) that retails here for $5.99 a bottle. It's widely distributed in the US, though, Rich, maybe not in PA--last I knew PA still had state-controlled stores. Put it this way--I stuck it as a ringer in a blind tasting with big name Aussie (and very tasty) and Rhone syrahs--Rosemount, Penfolds, Santa Duc,Guigal--and it blew them all away. And JDaniel, last I knew Southern Wines and Spirits was the distributor in AL, so it should be available there.

JD,

Does it say any more on the label as to where it came from (you guys sometimes get some of our best wines :tears:)? I'd liek to see if I can track any down on this side of the 'pond'.

Rosemount was great in 2000. I thought it kind of lost it's edge over some of the others after that.

Sorrry Cloth Ears, it's a no go. The bottle says that "we work with the top winemakers" ......

It was vinted and bottled by:
Winery Exchange
Murray St.
Tanunda Australia

"A dry winter and spring resulted in a Shiraz vintage with high concentration and smooth texture. This wine was matured in newer French and American Oak Barrels for one year. The finished wine shows rich, spicy black fruits, and soft vanilla oak spice."

Made right here in the states is Columbia Crest Two Vines.

Nothing better than a Barossa though.

We get our Yellowtale Shiraz from Australia at Sams here in Dallas. It's a Merlot & about $10+ a bottle. IT's very good. THe regular Shiraz isn't bad either. :thmbsp:

Is the "Z" silent in Shiraz? I love how Americans butcher every single consonant in every language known to man, except when it comes to French, they are veeery careful not to mispronounce the silent "t" , like in Monet, or the silent "z", like in Shiraz, lest they appear to uncultured. Spanish though, well, thats a barbarian language , so go ahead and say" la Quinta", with a hard "Q"!, and "Iraq"with a hard I and a hard Q- what an uncouth people masquerading as refined.
