View Full Version : Internet Radio Stations..
Reel 2 Reel 02-04-2006, 12:25 PM In todays world, with FM radio going to the dogs, many people are switching over to other alternatives for their music listening pleasure. Among those are Satellite radio such as Sirius and XM Which are good for listening to on the fly, and Internet Radio , which we all know comes in on a phone, or cable line into our homes via computer technology.
Satellite gives you the diversity of different stations that play different generes and styles, which are not present in the current FM broadcasts for large demographic areas. Satellite Radio is also very good for traveling long distances in a vehicle as well as short distances, like back and forth to work or even Grandmas house, and keep the same station. With FM, on long trips, you would find a good station only to have it fade out and dissapear after so many miles, and we all know how dissapointing that is. Satellite is there for the taking, as long as you pay your bill every month. Playing Satellite radio is still expensive. The cost of the service, Coupled along with the cost of the units to play it can add up.
With Internet radio there are many, many choises of different generes that FM radio, or even satellite radio, could never compete with in forms of diversity. It would be almost impossible for one person to try to find all the internet radio stations out there on the web.
I had a request for a new thread, for members old and new, to post their links and maybe a little review, or synopisis of their favorite internet radio stations to share with the memberage so they can listen to and enjoy them also.
Post your favorites here.... your responses are welcome also.

hpsenicka 02-04-2006, 09:53 PM Excellent Jazz content at WWW.JAZZ.FM.
Unfortunately the bit-rate of this stream is not very good... I think it is only 64kbps.
I have found less than 128kbps streaming to be disappointing as far as high fidelity audio is concerned.
A request... could posters to this thread please include the bitrate of the streams they are listing?
Radio Free Colorado http://www.radiofreecolorado.net/
dr*audio 02-04-2006, 10:56 PM Another vote for Folk Alley.
http://www.progradio.net/stations.htm has links to a buch of progressive rock stations.
http://www.live365.com/index.live lots of genres.
Not a radio station, but a source of all kinds of recorded music, including live concerts:
http://www.archive.org/
www.wcsb.org Cleveland State University's radio station.
uofmtiger 02-05-2006, 02:22 AM http://www.accuradio.com/ - A lot of variety. Has choices that range from Classical to Blues.
http://www.publicradiofan.com/cgi-bin/whatson.pl?when=now - a bunch of different Public Radio stations.
http://www.ratpacklive.com/ - Sinatra and friends
http://www.radiomargaritaville.com/listen.aspx - Buffett and friends
http://www.pandora.com/ - You have to give an email address if I remember correctly, but they allow you to customize stations around artists that you like. It is very cool.
soundmotor 02-05-2006, 11:08 AM Radio Free Colorado http://www.radiofreecolorado.net/
I started listening to RFC before Christmas and for one week it seemed they went Pink Floyd 24/7.
I'll have to go back & give them a listen again.

Wolfgang's Vault (http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/static.aspx?Type=Audio/Radio.htm&LeftNav=Audio/RadioNav.htm)
The Story.....
Bill Graham and his concert promotion company, Bill Graham Presents, produced more than 35,000 concerts all over the world. His first venue, the legendary Fillmore Auditorium, was home to many of rock's greatest performers - Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Doors, The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Prince - and the list goes on and on.
Graham taped thousands of live performances and stored the tapes in the basement of the BGP headquarters. These tapes and the concerts they captured lay dormant until the Bill Graham archive was acquired by Wolfgang's Vault (Bill Graham's given first name was Wolfgang) in 2003.
Vault Radio is now playing selected tracks from these concerts in an FM-quality, 128K digital radio stream. Songs will be added to and removed from the radio show on a regular basis. We will be broadcasting unaltered live performance music from many of the greatest bands of the last 40 years. The music you hear on Vault Radio has not been sweetened or polished. You'll be listening to what the band played that night - nothing more, nothing less.
Whitehall 04-18-2006, 11:27 AM Sorry, but 128 kbps is seriously compressed. Consider that uncompressed Red Book CDs are 1.4 Mbps. One could convert the 20-15kHz FM bandwidth to something like 1 Mbps (assuming still 16 bit).
An 8 to 1 compression is still compression. One could do some lossless compression but I wouldn't expect to achieve 2:1 without degradation.
Is there any internet station with a 500 kbps to 1 Mbps signal?
dr*audio 04-18-2006, 01:00 PM Pandora! You program your own station. You can set up several stations, each with a different genre. They play the first song, then suggest another and you tell it whether you like it or not. I't adaptive and learns what you like. And the audio quality is very good.

Mark W. 04-18-2006, 01:29 PM WOW the three FM's I listen to here in Silverton Oregon out of Portland and Corvallis/Albany are awesome. But then I listen to "Classic Rock" the Portland station recently played 923 songs from a voters best of list and for a week+ not one single duplicate. In fact I listen to this station a lot and I would say with a few exceptions it takes at least 3-5 days before I here a repeat. With a signal that comes the 40 miles to my house at 4.75 on the meter the quality is very good.
(just to defend a favorite source)

I really like Pandora to discover artists that I'm unfamiliar with but:
Q: What bitrate is the music you play?
We play 128Kbps streams. Pandora requires a broadband Internet connection.
I would pay more for a subscription for a 256K or 320K stream.
The Modfather 09-01-2006, 06:06 AM One of my favorite places to listen to music online is Pandora. http://www.pandora.com/ which more or less creates a radio station-like playlist from your tastes. You plug in an artist's name and it creates a playlist that fits that style of music. You can have multiple playlists in your account as well. For instance, if you go there and type in "Led Zeppelin" it will play artists like The Rolling Stones, Boston, Queen, etc etc. I think they also have a paid version of the site but I haven't gone that far.
I also have used Pirate Radio, if anyone's familiar with that, to run my own stations from time to time.

The radio station sounds incredible! I'll have to give it a try.
That "35,000" sounds really, really high, though. That's 1,000 a year, or almost 3 every single day, seven days a week, for 35 straight years. I don't think so...

dshoaf 10-26-2006, 10:14 PM I've been enjoying some of the nation's jazz stations via Internet radio for the past couple of years.
Favs are:
www.KPLU.org: They've got the standard 48K stream via Media Player and Real Player but I've never gotten the AAC-enabled 64K stream to work for me. Wish they'd go to 128K and soon.
www.KCSM.org: Bay area jazz station with lots of great music. Same issues as above.
www.radioio.com: Discovered these guys via my Squeezebox, which I use to get the audio out and into the stereo. Especially like their Classical and their jazz station. Whatever these guys are doing to the signal before its encoded is excellent, IMHO. If you go straight to their site, you'll get the high-bit-rate streams when you sign up for their service. Depending on what you like, this isn't expensive. They offer 2 128K streams via the Squeezenetwork but you'll have to download the SB3 emulator, Softsqueeze to use them. There's quite a few more high bit rate streams on the SqueezeNetwork, too.
Cheers,
David
Cleve 10-26-2006, 10:41 PM For high bitrate feeds check out http://www.tuner2.com
Hmmm, says they're sorting according to variety in their programming (whatever the heck that means) rather than bitrate. A 32 Kb station is at the top - hardly 'high bitrate". :(
nathanso 11-02-2006, 12:40 AM I think tuner2 is focusing on aacPlus as opposed to MP3, and for now they're listing it in all bitrates. Not more than two weeks ago they were sorting by bitrate and it was easy to find the nice feeds.
SomaFM is experimenting with 64K aacPlus on their Groove Salad feed.. sounds nice! Lots of bass.

I just emailed tuner2 to complain about this and they said they were going back to sorting by bit-rate, or at least offering it as a sort option. Considering all the FM++ listings they now include, this is much needed.
nathanso 11-17-2006, 07:00 PM Here's a nice classical feed from the UK: http://87.117.200.139:8060

Rickster 08-26-2007, 06:00 PM Hi Folks,
Shortwave seems to be dead - or nearly - I became addicted to the BBC news over the last 40 years - it seems time to switch to the net.
So I took a stab and purchased a "Tangent Quattro" internet radio from C.Crane on he web - cost about $350 US
You need a computer on a high speed conection (DSL, cable etc.) and a wireless router to make it work.
First impressions are reall quite good.
The radio sounds decent on its own however It has a line out stereo signal which sounds really quite good thro' my tube equippment.
I would put the quality of the signal somewhere between my satelite radio and my FM Tuner - actually very close to the tuner - significantly better than the satelite signal I get from the satelite radio.
There are 6000 plus stations on the net now - this radio makes it very easy to tune any - and all of them in - with little hassel.
Basically - pick a country, then pick a genre- ie news, jazz, public, 60's, 70's world, folk etc then pick a station.
For example there are 2400 staions in the USA that this radio recognizes. just about every public broadcast station is available by state.
I think here were 3 stations in Zimbabwe, 2 in Armenia. These stations are all on the net but you would be hard pressed to find them as easily as this radio makes it for you.
Currently I preset some of my six presets to:
KKJZ in Los Angeles (K Jazz),
Putamayo - World, BC - News,
South Africa -Channel Africa - really good music
Maine Public radio - signal is better than on my $1000 FM Tuner and absolutely static free.
Bottom line is the signal is better than satelite it has over 6000 stations and it doesn't cost anything to run it.
all for now
Rick

jackwoz 03-10-2008, 02:46 PM For real free form radio try KPIG radio from Freedom CA.
www.kpig.com Truly the last hippie hideout.:beatnik:
thedruid 03-17-2008, 11:10 PM I've been trying out a free internet radio program, Nexus Radio.
http://www.nexusradio.com/
They state it has over 6,000 stations and I believe it. There's something of every genre there. I have two personal favorites:
www.sektor 1.de The Legends of Rock Channel
http://80.154.35.61:8020
Classic Rock 256 kbps
MediaMerlin Classic 192
http://204.9.117.194:8300
Classic Rock 192 kbps
I heard a song by the Byrds tonight that I haven't heard in years, "Chestnut Mare."
Once I finish up the music server for the mancave I'm sure Nexus will be installed.

Search bar for anything you want right in the middle, to the right is a drop-down of genre's that can meet anyone's desire, showing server capacity, load, and stream quality. We run it all the time across a gambit of music types at my office, and used at home for parties and such. I couldn't live without it!
VinylHanger 04-19-2008, 04:00 AM BBC iPlayer radio. This is one I have been checking out recently. The link is for the BBC video site, but if you click on the radio link, it takes you to the iPlayer radio player. Neat stuff.

isaacc7@cox. 10-21-2008, 09:33 PM I listen to WCWM when I'm riding around town and they're online too. It's a classic college radio station, lots of guitars, noise experiments, bad DJs, and you never know what's coming on next. I recommend it highly if you get tired of classic rock and the same old playlists found on all of the other clearwater stations... WCWM (http://web.wm.edu/so/wcwm/?svr=www).

When I click on the "Listen" tab, it automatically launches windows media player, which immediately errors out. The error which is generated is not in the online database. WMP cannot access the audio stream, or the link to the audio stream contains an error.
The web site does not offer the ability to launch any other player. Launching winamp or any other player before starting the stream has no affect.

Perhaps it depends on your default configurations for handling different types of files. I just entered ther using Firefox as navigator, and it opened a dialog case asking me to choose the program to use to listen to the stream audio.
Hope it helps.
Fisherdude 10-24-2008, 06:01 PM Actually, I use Firefox as my default browser. Maybe I'll try to change some of the media settings and see if I can get it to work. I've tried iTunes, and no luck.

elseed 11-25-2008, 08:27 PM Someone mentioned it in another thread somewhere, but www.kcdx.com (http://www.kcdx.com) streams a fantastic mix of commercial free classic rock at 64 Kbps. My current favorite internet radio station, and available on the air from Florence, AZ (in the east valley of Phoenix) at 103.1FM.
From their playlist as of this moment...
6:00 pm - Genesis - Turn It On Again
6:03 pm - Foreigner - Head Games
6:07 pm - Linda Ronstadt - Just One Look
6:10 pm - Bob Seger - mary lou
6:13 pm - The Who - Who Are You
6:18 pm - Billy Joel - Honesty

Sovereign 12-01-2008, 04:10 PM Thumbs up for Radio Paradise. Song selections are great and now that they've brought back the 192Kbps stream, they rock that much harder. I run my own server from a relay of 128Kbps. It's an ecectic mix similar to RP but just music, no DJ.
There are limit's to listeners (25) if you want to listen.

These are favorites, but listen to many others, depending on mood. Both stream at 128Kbps, which, IMHO, is better than FM quality.
I use two OmniFi DMS-1 streamers, with the open source firmware. One is modded with an internal Sure Electronics T-amp, driving a pair of Minimus-7's through a Phase Tech passive sub. Also use a Freecom MusicPal internet radio, usually through another T-amp and home made fullrange speakers.
Also stream my CD collection from a $10 epay thin client with an added laptop drive, running FreeNAS, which has MediaTomb server. FreeNAS has CIFS support, so am able to mount the drive remotely from Windows PC, and encode the CDs to it using iTunes. I encode @ 192Kbps VBR.

Catswold 01-31-2009, 09:33 PM The Technicolor Web of Sound (http://www.techwebsound.com/) has already been mentioned. Great late 60's psychedelia includes advertisements from the period. The guy creates his playlists with blocks of ads and the music doesn't repeat for at least a week. Bit rate = 128
Beyond the Beat Generation (http://www.beyondthebeatgeneration.com/) is one of the best of the 60's stations...lots of really rare local band cuts, demos, and unreleased garage bands...all of it pretty darn good. Late 60's stuff. Pretty much have never heard of any of these bands. Bit rate = 128

Amazed to find they are now broadcasting @320Kbps, in both mp3 and OGG Vorbis formats. You rockers will no doubt find plenty to listen to, sadly not much for Jazz fans that I can find. I never listen to it on FM because the signal sucks here at home, but I'll be interested to see what Crossing Continents has in about three hours, and that blues show on Sunday nites might be worthwhile...
levlhed 10-22-2009, 02:13 PM Shirley & Spinoza Radio (http://www.compund-eye.org) Listen to the archive stream for about an hour or so and you should understand the scope of it...lots of found-sound, weird instructional records, messed up remixes, field recordings, ragtime, skits, electronic ambiance, silly and eclectic.
